Basenoters' Desktops

Thread Starter
Hello all

Everybody knows how Basenoters' do perfume... how do Basenoters' do their computer desktops tho.. is the question

p.s. I have checked, there is one thread similar to this but its from 2006 and needless to say.. contains nothing that can be referenced today.. so let's start an ongoing thread for posting Computer Desktops.. I mean we have threads for almost everything else in the off-topic area.. so why not desktops? I'm sure there would be quite a few enthusiasts here who would like to show the 'tops

So lemme begin with my own.... I have an iMac and a regular PC, just for the record.

Okay, nothing exciting, actually very boring. I don't like anything on my desktop, like a lot of folders, I'm fairly neat. Just a folder to a promo CD I received, and I have a standard background.

I don't know if I can post mine. It's rated PG-13. It's a full body shot of Monica Bellucci in something see-thru.

my desktops on my Macs are exactly like my meatspace desktops. Sloppy

It's organized clutter I also love the water

I run a pretty tight ship as I run a design biz from home. I generally try and keep my desktop tidy.

Just a "business" folder and a "personal" folder, as well as a new one titled "dimis inspiration" containing info to get me on the right track with my new weight/exercise program.
The graphic itself is a logo I designed for the band EUROPE which was used on t-shirt merchandise of theirs last year.

Silverbullet - couldnt help but notice a folder specifically created for Basenotes!

EDITED - pic removed due to bandwidth issues
post #13 of 93
I like the background Dimitri, very kewl. Basenotes folder? I keep photos of Creed, Serge Lutens, Frederick Malle, Montale, and Penhaligon's

Brilliant desktop picture Dimi... i'm a big fan of anything graphite and shiny metaly
post #15 of 93
I'm kinda surprised to see a lot of Basenoters using Macs... not that I have anything against the company (I worked at an Apple store for 2 months or so), but just kinda surprised...

The JPEG I currently have on my desktop does NOT constitute nudity, so I don't want to hear whining from any puritanical lurkers.

Straight ladies and gay gents, I give you the GOR-chus Mr. Scott Bakula in naught save his tighty-whities:

I don't like a lot of icon clutter, although these bottles are a little busy as well:

When I'm not tweaking one of these wallpapers, my desktop shows a picture of my sons against a black background.
My god, that's a pretty collection of light blue bottles!

Thank you! I'm working on a series of different colors, just for fun. Here are the 3 I've done so far, if anyone else would like to use them:

+ Viktorov's Black Bottles

I'm liking the sleekness of Dimi's desktop right now.

This is the desktop I use for work. Can't have anything too flashy, I work with very conservative people.

Wow... so that is what a desktop should look like? Huh... I always thought it was the place to put ALL your files and folders! I had forgotten that I had a desktop!

Java, I love the neutral gray theme. There used to be a site called ResExcellence where desktop themes were uploaded with a listing of what and where you could download items being used to get the customized effects. This was Mac only at the time.

Icon Factory is still in business.

Thanks

Yes, i'm aware of that site... you can get themes (and icons and wallpapers) at Interfacelift.com as well, although that and all the rest of the sites only have themes that are kinda old, and not to mention only the official releases.

I used to be a member of a mac customizing forum where we shared "mods" .. or modified (for personal use) themes which can't be released officially as they're mods of themes that some themers don't allow the release of mods of. The theme you see in my shot is one such theme, a mod done for personal use.

And yes, that's "Off topic Basenotes" in the app-bar!

Mine is really wide, since I have a double monitor (horizontal) at my desk. I love this particular desktop image I have, it's by artist Dustin Hostetler, also known as UPSO

The desktop (the machine I'm posting from):

The laptop:

EDIT: I'm happy Java already gave the shoutout to InterfaceLIFT.com, which is where the 2nd wallpaper came from. The first one is the always lovely Elisha Cuthbert and I got that one from SexyDesktop.co.uk, which is hit-and-miss at best but does have a few gems like that one. There's also a wallpaper-sized version of my avatar.

Brilliant desks Bluesoul.. and Mike.. yeah that's REALLY wide... i'm hoping one doesn't have to tilt the head sideways to cover the entire display area

If anyone's interested in grabbing some wallpapers I had made for myself, you can go there ----> http://picasaweb.google.com/java.green

Be careful tho.. most of 'em are NSFW (Not Safe For Work) and most are 1440x900 .. there are some which are bigger than that, though.... happy downloading

Here's the Mac.

I try to keep my dock as slim as possible I use Quicksilver to get to the stuff not in there. Quicksilver is worth buying a Mac for.

I've not upgraded to Leopard yet (can't afford and not sure if my aging mac would hack it )

For those interested in whats in the dock: (top to bottom).

Finder
Firefox - I've gone from Safari to Camino and finally settled on Firefox
Alpha baby - ideal if you have kids. Just fire this up and they cn press any keys they like without mucking anything up.
Graphic Converter - been using this since OS8 - the swiss army knife of gfx apps
Filemaker 6 - where the Basenotes database lives
Swift Publisher -dtp
Pixelmator - Photoshop type app (but cheaper)
Write Room - writing without any distractions
Coda - my current web development app of choice (by the makes of transmit)
Twitteriffic - I'm not sure I'm into Twitter yet, but giving it a go
Skype

Quicksilver has rendered my dock redundant.. I very rarely use it now.. HIGHLY adictive stuff, this Quicksilver

I have an app that rotates my desktop background every 60 seconds. All are various tech-y, landscape, space, or sureal scenes, except this one. This I shot myself. I'm no photographer but I tried to capture the colors and texture as best I could of possibly the most beautiful orchid (or any flower for that matter) I've ever seen. The photo doesn't do it justice. Live, this orchid was mesmerizing. I got it to cheer up a good friend at work who had had a particularly trying morning.

I feel so ignorant. I tried and can't paste my desktop here. I right-clicked and then clicked on Properties but then didn't know what to do so I went to the source for my background and it's this:

Sorry for the over sized pic. Cigar smoking is one of my other hobbies......

Don't forget us gals javagreen!

Grant-- Thank you for the heads up about Quicksilver. And also to javagreen for the endorsement. I'm amused by the way Blacktree is employing the rotating cube effect. One thing that really, REALLY bugged me about Leopard was what I had to go thru to open an application. I like to keep my dock hidden and uncluttered, and it was sometimes cumbersome when working in multiple apps. This was addressed somewhat in the last big update, but the "solution" looks inelegant to me (actually looks like OS 9), and more like something kludged following too many complaints.

Anyway, it's poppy season here in the South Bay. I took this picture a couple of days ago in the backyard and made it my desktop. (I quite like the transparent menu bar, but I know many others vigorously disagree).
