Aigner Black & John Varvatos .. Separated At Birth?

I have just received my bottle of Aigner Black and I'm really enjoying it. However, something tells me I've all seen it before. Let me explain.

Aigner Black has a two tone box, black and silvery grey
John Varvatos has a two tone box, black and silver

Aigner Black has a leather patch on the bottle top
John Varvatos has a leather band across the middle of the bottle

Aigner Black's spray mechanism is the same colour as the top tone on the box (silvery grey)
John Varvatos is the same only its silver

Both leathery scents, Aigner's leather note being more prominent

Both launched in 2004

And to my nose, when I sprayed Aigner I thought to myself; 'Wow, this smells a whole lot like John Varvatos without the date note and it is not as smoky'

Oh just another somewhat Irrelevant side note: they come in the same sizes, 4.2 and 2.5 Oz bottles!

Is this just an unfortunate coincidence?

great! btw, i did notice lot of similarities between JV and christian lacroix Tumulte...just fyi....only tumulte is minus the leather note and tons of cedar+ink...but both are surely distant cousins...

dimitrios...did you try tumulte...?

The one and ONLY thing common between these two is the leather note. apart from that, these teo are completely different beasts altogether... once settled on the skin, they take the completely opposite paths.

I find Aigner Black to be a tad more sweeter than John Varvatos.... and definitely more "sexy" of the two after it settles. Think of Aigner Black as Angelina Jolie and John Varvatos as Jessica Alba... while both are sexy, Jolie is more "sultry" .... probably not an ideal correlation.. but you get the idea

That being said, both have their own merits and specialties .. most notably the seamless blend of musk notes in the Aigner and the "date" note in Varvatos... I will always have a bottle of either in my wardrobe.

Thanks for mentioning this Jenson ,, I will try and get a sample to see what Tumulte is all about because I like JV very much .

I cant see any similarity between two scents!

[john varvatos: a refined, woody, oriental, leathery scent
Aigner Black: a powdery citrus vanilla scent]

I love John Varvatos and like the other guys will always have a bottle in my collection - if Aigner Black is similar, I might check it out!

I love both scents. I bought Aigner Black about 1.5 years before John Varvatos. When I first tried JV I didn't associate it with AB at all. However, I think Aigner Black projects better and longer lasting.

I agree with K it projects better and lasts longer , I noticed that early on . The two are very very different , however the JV to my nose is brilliant , the AB not so even though im just acquanting myself with it .

The similarities were not so much between the scents themselves although I found them to be quite similar, but in their execution (packaging, presentation e.t.c)
