spritz, spritz .. sniff sniff .. ohh yuk !! .. MY LAST BLIND BUY

Giorgio RED .. Is the one that finally has done it for me .
Over the past year or so I have bought most of my frags blind & in all honesty has been a 60-40 affair , with more keepers .
I now have many swap buddies & I don't shell out blind anymore . I look forward to continuing sampling more & eliminating names from the get list .
About RED >> I will never forget the foul overwhelming egg odour eminating from this fragrance straight from bottle & all the way down to its base notes .. its horrible , the only other time I have experienced such dissapontment was when I tried Bandit ... yuk !! that one smelt like burning flesh mixed with industrial waste being churned out of Aushwitz stack .
I bought RED blind because the original Giorgio yellow was brilliant back in the 80's & I used it on many occasions via a freinds bottle .
Unfortunately RED is not for me .

OMG!

Red is on the way and should be here within the next 4-5 days. This is scary. I hope it'd turn out, at least, okay for me.

Ouch! With a smell like that I doubt RED will be for anyone else... but you never know, there are fans of just about everything

Dimitrios, you're talking about the Red for men, right? not the womens version? just checkin.

By the way, I remember Red for men from the 90's,and I liked it back then. I don't own it now
It's not supposed to have an "egg" odour though. I think yours is old stock maybe and has gone off.

Now you have taken it to another level ....
It one thing to use imagination & yes perhaps using the stack of a WWII camp wasn't the best comparison but ....... WTF !!!! ....
Tell us all what it tastes like Overload ... hehehe

get back to your mothers fish and chip shop. your fathers working her toooo hard. probably out gambling the life savings away...
I think that either something is very wrong with your particular bottle or the reformulation is way off. But I'm sorry to hear it, anyway.

I have a bottle of the original stuff, and there is nothing eggy or sulfurous about it in the least. It's a very good, manly, complex old style fragrance.

I'm a big fan of it, but I can understand why some people, especially those used to lighter, more transparent style frags, wouldn't care for it. But given your usual preferences I figured you'd really like Red. I can only assume that you're not smelling a true representation of the scent.

Maybe I can send you a sample of the old stuff so you can compare the two.

overload ... You are in need of therapy & anger management mate .. you are embarassing yourself & the rest of us Australian members here .
Had Bandit been made in the 60's or 70's I would have drawn a different picture to describe it .
But for you to jump out of nowhere & get downright filthy is not called for .
Your first comment made no sense & was pure anger & hatred .
I don't see the need for comments like the one above !
My analogy was just a decription of how vile the scent smelt to me .
I will be reporting you to the moderators & hopefully they will erase your comments & perhaps ban you .
Ofcourse thats not a propblem for you because you will just recreate yourself again .. just like you did before .

Jeez overload needs to settle down!
I have never had an opportunity to sniff any of the Giorgio mens frags (except Wings, but that was ghastly!), but I dont have high expectations after my girlfriends friend dousing herself in Giorgio... *shudders*

thanks Anthony ... its all in the name .
He really needs some anger management as well as some therapy to calm his nerves .

Overload isn't a fellow member anymore. For the time being I leave up his posts so that it's clear why.
Thank you everyone!

WHICH FRAG HAS FINALLY TURNED YOU OFF BLIND BUYING ?
WOW!

uh...

As for the question,
I've only made a small number of blind buys. I don't recall any of them being good ones, other than the Orange Spice which I only recently obtained. But those were in my "early days" of collecting, and they were just cheapos anyway (Diesel Yellow, Police Uomo, etc).

However, it wasn't the lack of success in making blind buys that eventually turned into my no-blind-buy "policy". I just gradually realized that it is really a gamble, regardless of what you read on BN. Sometimes, I either would seem to smell things differently than the way others have described it, or find the "levels" to be unaccommodating, for instance.

It is so much more fun to try and get as many samples as possible, and continually sniff them to REALLY find what floats your boat! (right now, I've got Rose 31 on my wrists, Vetiver 48 on my elbows, and Patchouli 24 on my forearms, while I watch the Pistons game! ) I don't know why I don't hear of more Basenoters with massive sample and decant collections! This is the way to go! (not to mention the money you save and not having to sell stuff you don't like)

Blind buys are fun, but I don't have enough money to buy things I might not like....
The trick with blind buys is to read the Basenotes forum and reviews a lot, and figure out who your 80 or 90% scent mates are - the guys whose opinions on scents you tend to strongly agree with some 80 or 90% of the time.

Then, when it comes to a blind buy, either read what they've written or PM them before committing to the buy.

This will boost your odds of successful blind buying.

Diesel Plus Masculine has turned me off blind-buying things that arnt what I'd typically wear (fresh-type frags). It was only 10$ though, so no big loss.
It smells to me like I ate a whole bunch of pot-pourri, then mixed some cinamon with water and proceeded to drink it, allowed it to partially digest then threw it back up onto my wrists half an hour later.
I should've known after the cloying monster that was Diesel Plus Plus not to buy this, but the reviews made it sound soo tempting.
I don't gamble often but when I do it's with a blind buy. Last one was Truefitt & Hill 1805 Cologne from a fellow Basenotes member and I absolutely loved it. One blind buy that turned me off was Claiborne Spark but at least it was a mini!

When I have a few extra dollars at the end of the month I like to buy a blind bottle, no more that $20-30 though!

I have to agree with Noggs on the Red. I knew an older bottle and I just got one of the newer stock and there is nothing sulfurous in the formula. I wonder what's going on with your bottle Dimitrios?

On to your question; I still haven't been turned off to blind buying! I gotten a few clinkers but was able to sell them off here. Otherwise, I have stellar record for awesome blind buys. I research the heck out of the scent here and anywhere else I can find a review and then seek out trusted Basenoter's opinions and I've also been doing this for a while so that helps. My latest blind loves are D'orsay's Arome 3, Chevalier and Le Dandy. The thrill of the blind buy accelerates my scent obsession.

I wore my Diesel Plus Masculine last week and I still like it. Funny thing was I went and put my jumper on four days later, and it smelled heavenly of cinnamon and all the other good things. That Diesel Plus Masculine has got some serious staying power.

Seems to me you're more a subtle kind of guy Anthony. Have you tried the Armani's?

I've stopped buying for a while. Been very happy with my last 2 purchases (D&G pour Homme, Claiborne Sport) so I don't feel like I need to buy anymore for a while! All up for trading my stuff that I dont wear though

I haven't tried the Armanis properly. I smelt Aqua di Gio on at least 7 different guys on the way to and from work today :\\. I'll have to give their other frags a sniff in the next few weeks. Most of the stuff I own is pretty 'inoffensive' though, the most outgoing frags I own are probably le Male, Black XS and Rive Gauche.

I'm glad you liked the Clairborne Sport, I was wondering how it would work out for you. Oddly enough, while I really like the two Diesels you despise, D&G Homme is the most cloying scent I own - I like it a lot when I first put it on, then don't won't to see it again for weeks by the end of the day.

Since we seem to be poles apart on many scents, I'd be curious to know your thoughts on my favourite Armani, namely Remix.

I don't find D & G pH cloying at all. I can happily spray it on the front of my neck and not get a headache or any cloying feeling in the back of my throat!. I get more of a soapy, tobacco, tonka-bean vibe. Sorta like what a shirt smells like 2 days after wearing le Male, mixed with unsmoked cigs.. Maybe its my skin? Its easily in my top 5 out of what I own.
I've found, however, that Joop! Jump and Oscar de la Renta pour Lui both give me massive headaches - although they couldn't be more opposite fragrances!
