worth a try at least:
Helmut Lang Cuiron
Hermès Bel Ami
Montale Aoud Cuir d'Arabie
Knize Ten
Etro Gomma
Chanel Cuir de Russie
Etat Libre d'Orange Rien
Creed Royal English Leather
L'Artisan Parfumeur DZING! (and also DZONGHKA has a leather note in it though it's not to be considered a leather scent)
Tom Ford Tuscan Leather
Lutens Daim Blond and Cuir Mauresque
Magnifiscent's list is perfect, IMO. The only other one I'd add is Keiko Mecheri's Un Fleur de Peau, which I've seen compared to Cuir Mauresque and I enjoy vey much (but suggest holding tight for the drydown, which is lovely).

If you're looking for a lighter leather note, I also suggest trying Gres Cabochard.

Good luck, and enjoy!
Magnifiscent's list is great. I will add Nostalgia by Santa Maria Novella and Duro by Nasomatto.
Miller Harris Cuir d'Oranger

Wow!! Excellent and informative link. Great read. Thanks.

I would like to add Santa Maria Novella - Acqua di Cuba as an option if you like tobacco with your leather.

Santos
BdP
Derby
and Bel Ami.

One more: Cuir de Russie (Le Jardin Retrouvé).

Shocked. Shocked I am that no one has yet mentioned a truly fantastic leather fragrance...

Helmut Lang Curion

Leather is present in top through base notes, and the topnotes of leather are intermingled with sour plum notes, which sounds odd but works remarkably well to offset the darkness off the leather.

Do yourself a favor and read the BN reviews (http://www.basenotes.net/ID26122253.html) they do an excellent job of explicating on this discontinued gem. It is still available reasonably priced if you do some hunting.

It's important when searching for leather that you decide what kind of leather guy are you?
New
Old
Musty
Etc...................
Carlo Corinto (the original). Leather and "dark" amber. And you can get it really cheap. Try perfume.com, for example.
Cuir Ottoman is a beautiful sueded soft buttery leather IMO.

thebeck i have no experience with leather frags. Did test & like till now antaeus. Which kind of leather is it ? I would say light. and would add new/modern.

Acutally Antaeus is not truly a leather scent: in fact it's more the sage+patchouli+beeswax giving a earthy, slightly animalic/resinous vibe that can recall the leather (or even more suede) vibe, but I wouldn't classify it as a stricht leather fragrance like i.e. knize ten where among the floral bunches, you can smell a clear animalic, almost rubber-like note.
Great recs! May I add Parfumerie Générale Cuir d'Iris....a unique interpretation of leather, dry and slightly powdery. No other leather scent that I know smells like it. And since you're in Germany, it should be easy for you to try also Harry Lehmann's Russisch Juchten - classic, classy and inexpensive.
Pardon me if someone has already mentioned this but the newest variant of Eau Sauvage, the 'Cuir Fraicheur', is a rather nice leather/citrus combination.

Dang Joe, that's scary, even to me

I'd like to add:

Elsha - 1776 Russian Leather
Truefitt & Hill - Spanish Leather
Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier - Parfum D'Habit ( Military Leather here)..I think Eric Anzalone wore this.

My type of Leather

Also, Creed Royal English Leather
Knize Ten has become increasingly harder to find in America. It's a German company and a walk in a city shopping district might turn up a way for you to sample it or get a small bottle. If it wasn't the first true leathery scent, it was very close to being such. I think it was released in the 30's with French perfumers following. It was a very controversial scent at the time sold by a mens haberdasher.

I'd be curious if you could let us know if you find any Knize Ten in Germany and if so you could start a new topic or tell us here??

We are Borg. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.
I would recommend trying:

L'Artisan Parfumeur Dzing! & Tea For Two
(I know "leather" might not be the first thing that comes to mind with the name "Tea For Two" but somehow when I sampled it last night, the scent image I was getting was the equivalent of a very nice leather - A must try IMO.)
Hope this aint a thread hijack, buuuuut...
As someone whos into relatively "fresh, light" frags (Nightflight, D&G pour Homme, Bvlgari Aqua and le Male are some of my current faves) what is a good leather-based frag to try that carries with it a fair whallop of leather? I dont have access to many niche or exclusive brands, so anything fairly common is appreciated (ie designer)
I used to work in a shoe store so I know what natural leather smells like, but so far I havent smelt any real leather prominent frags (to my knowledge, anyway!) I've heard that D&G pour homme has leather in it but I cant detect any...
Anthony, aside the scents I mentioned in my first post in this thread, for designer fragrances with hints of leather or suede (sorry but you're right, no leather in Dolce&Gabbana PH) you can check these:

Dior Homme has leather in the base
Dior Eau Sauvage Frecheur Cuir is a nice citrus-leather twist
CK Obsession Night Him has suede
CK Euphoria 4M has suede too
Hermès Eau d'Hermès - cologne with faint suede-like cumin accord

Cuir Ottoman is a very wearable leather. Very smooth. For those who think they don't like leather.

I thought they were Czech? In any case, I find it very similar to Creed's Royal English Leather

you're correct and it's not the first time I've made this dumb mistake on Basenotes. Knize is a word found in some Slavic languages, denoting a nobility rank.

Knize the tailors were established in Vienna in 1859.

Knize Ten was actually created in 1924.

I find it similar to Creed's Royal English Leather also (it's leather!) but an awful lot less expensive. Of course I know Creed raise's it's own leather. <sic>

Well I only mentioned their similarity because you were talking about how hard it is to find K10 and IMO they're close enough to "substitute" for one another.

What about Trussardi Uomo ?

Interesting that Dior homme and Eau Sauvage have leather notes.

have to try Hermès Eau d'Hermès

Didn´t recognize till now Kníze Ten here in my little town.

only Dior Homme has some faint soft suede/new car leather sort of notes.....however Dior Homme is primarily a very lipstick-y sort of scent...great scent, but NOT a leather scent IMO.

Eau Sauvage has NOTHING leather about it....dunno why anyone would say that. The limited edition Eau Sauvage Cuir Fraicheur likely does have leather notes...but not the regular one.

Eau D'Hermes is another scent where i don't really get the leather claims made by people. I have it and i love it....but what i smell is a bouquet of spices...Cumin, Cinnamon, Cardimum and lots more...it's a sharp scent, loaded with spice. Minimal to NO leather IMO.

the 'original' Bel Ami has leather notes, however the reformulated Bel Ami doesn't really have strong leather notes; it delves more on the spicey side, like Eau D'Hermes.

Said that the post where I mention Dior Homme was about suggesting scents with just the idea of leather, just an hint and not bold leather juices (that was the theme of my first post instead)...
Personally I don't get the lipstick quality of Dior Homme while I detect faint hints of leather in the base.
Eau Sauvage has indeed nothing to share with leather, in fact my suggestion was for the Frecheur Cuir edition.
Eau d'Hermès is not truly a leather fragrance, but a soapy cologne with spices and slightly animalic undertones that somehow can remember soft suedeish smell, at least to me

If you re not able to find scents which Magnifiscent mentioned, try Gucci pour homme ( its available in many shops..i think there is a leather note in base)..

yes cee-go you are right gucci ph has leather in his basenotes.

it was a long time ago in my pending list till i did kick it to choose rochas lui & antaeus but i will try it again.
Many of the suggestions so far are not considered leather fragrances.

Just because something has a leather note does not make it a leather scent. That would be like saying that all fragrances with bergamot are citrus scents.

A good place to start is Michael Edwards' fragrance directory:
http://www.fragrancedirectory.info/usadirectory/

Click on 'fragrance families' at the bottom of the list. (this first step has already been done)
Then click on the plus sign next to 'Dry Woods' (Michael's term for leather or tobacco scents)
There are four subcategories.
Explore each one of them.
Have fun!

thx i am there and it´s interesting that i find at the fresh dry woods category one of my last frags - cartier declaration. ehmmm

Antaeus is there in "rich dry woods"

oooh and rococo from joop - this one is not for everyone :--)

so much frags - to much frags

I've 2 leathers which I liked

Kelly Caleche by Hermes
Duel by Annick Goutal.

today i happened to try Dzing!!! this one has to be one of the best leather scents around. right of the spritzer it screams out Brand new shinin leather....Mercs with leather seats got to smell like these...after about half an hour, leather gathers some dust and it turns out to be a a slightly dusty leather bag....this one will have you surprised. amazin scent and a tribute to leather.

thx spawny & jenson

My wife is using kelly which i did try too

Dzing!!! - have to read reviews here

did recognized another leather-based one which i did use and did forget - karl lagerfeld photo.
Hermes Caleche (the original) is a soapy, leathery scent.

Dzing! is definitely something special, I agree. But I am not sure it is for everybody, lol

I also tested Cuir de Lancome which is a very high quality, dark but clean leather scent. It is in their special edition line (called La Collection), so not all department stores have it.

true, Dzing!! is weird, suggested it purely for its leather base.....i would not buy a whole bottle of it..but at the same time, very hard to resist not having one in your collection for one of those days.

It took a while for this scent to "click" with me. At first, all I could smell was bandages and something like an animal cage or horse stable. Then one day, I was sitting in class and I smelled what I thought was Dzing! I looked around, and sitting next to me was a guy in a leather jacket. Click!

Now I think Dzing! is one of the best modern leather scents out there, but I think if it has not "clicked" with everybody, it won't have universal appeal

I do not own Dzing!, and if I were to buy a special leather scent, it would probably be Chanel Cuir de Russie. Still, I have the utmost appreciation for it, and I think it is one of L'Artisan's best scents.
