Jovan Sex Appeal

Just for kicks I sampled this today and found it to be very reminiscent of Creed BdP during the drydown. A solid, rich, and satisfying bargain fragrance, IMO.

Does anyone know the note pyramid for JSA?

Unfortunately I don't know the pyramid, but I just have to say that it reminds me a LOT of Old Spice. And my nose seems to be alone in that comparison.

JSA is spicy, but it doesn't smell like OS to me.

Just found this using Google: "Launched By The Design House Of Jovan In 1976, Jovan Sex Appeal Is Classified As A Refined, Oriental, Woody Fragrance. This Masculine Scent Possesses A Blend Of Patchouli And Sandalwood, A Classic Oriental Scent. It Is Recommended For Evening Wear."

I think there's more to this fragrance than just patchouli and sandalwood.

I seem to remember some nutmeg and clove. Other warm spices and elements along that line.

I love everything about this 70's scent, the name, the packaging. I am so tempted to buy it, but would I ever wear it?
I also like it and suffer from the same dilema - - I don't kow if I would actually wear it.
I like the smell of it but don't really enjoy wearing it, which is why it's on my swap list. I think it may be too much amber, but whatever it is, it's too "heavy" for me, and I like Carven Homme more, so it doesn't really fit in for me in any way.

I've had this on all day now and the final drydown is thick, resinous, spicy. Can you say S E X?

This is one of my cheap fragrance faves. It's my "porn star" scent. It makes me feel very Leisure Suit Larry. Downright PORNO like Burt Reynolds. Just a few dabs and I feel hair growing on my chest.

Cheers,
Al

Incase anyone is looking for it, fragrancenet.com has it for like $12 and a 15% coupon code works (NJPM8)

An unfortunate caricature of this fragrance, IMO. It doesn't smell "cheap" to me at all. The drydown is every bit as complex as that of BdP, IMO.

Wow! As good as BdP (or as bad)? LOL. I was going to create a sales thread and put it up for $7. I guess I had better reconsider!

You didn't know? It actually is Bois de Portugal. The Creed family secretly owns Jovan. They do two versions of everything; a $125 version and a $7.99 version.

Ah, just buy it! There is nothing quite like the feeling you get when you are rocking a fragrance that you know set you back less than the cost of your lunch!

Cheers,
Joseph

This practice is actually much more common than what most people think.
That said it is nothing like BdP

Just tried BdP, and it is similar to JSA (drydown only), but even more similar to KL Lagerfeld. BdP is smoother than JSA, and also has more going on, especially what I pick up as a cigarette smoke note. KLL doesn't have that either, but it's also smoother and a bit more interesting (less synthetic too) than JSA. Still, I can see how people would say the drydowns are similar, because they are, in general. However, this is probably a good example of what the aficionado is seeking, as opposed to a more casual buyer. It's the "small" differences that make a big distinction.

Coincidence: I sniffed this a couple weeks ago at Target. I saw the bottle and I couldn't resist and the name makes me giggle.

I agree with the clove note - the first sniff reminded me of a blend of rubbing alcohol and clove cigarettes.

I can't imagine wearing this, but hey if someone coordinates a Sniff-n-Speak Day I'll wear it.

This is great stuff and a great value. You get your amber, patchoulli, sandalwood and musk and it's spicy. The trick is not to overapply. I don't see the connection to BdP. BdP is more similar IMHO to Caron's 3e Homme.

I actually decanted it into another bottle as the original bottle looks VERY cheap and perceptions are everything, the scent is great with excellent sandalwoody(?) drydown.

That explains so much !!!!

Obviously the $7.99 versions were also made with longevity and product consistency in mind.

It smells nothing like BdP. More like Acier Aluminium with all the musk. Why do you keep comparing $5 scents to Creeds on a the basis of a one-time trial? For example: Clubman smells like Royal English Leather to you? Tell you what: purchase a bottle, wear it for awhile, then let us all know if it's still "solid, rich and satisfying".
