Best of Basenotes

Thread Starter
Sometimes we get requests to make a useful thread a sticky. We dont tend to do this as if we did it with every good thread, we'd have about ten pages of stickies.

Instead, I propose we open a 'library' which showcases the best threads, the ones which we can point new members to, and the ones older members can still learn from.

So your post your nominations please for the best threads on BN and I'll add them to this post (if accepted).

Please provide the link to the thread

The Best of Basenotes

Fake Fragrance information

Fragrance Discussion

Perfumery and note identification
/ Note themed threads

Retail

Fun and games

A great thread for anybody interested in Agarwood:

OK. I will personally begin my choices with what has become my favorite stop on Basenotes.

WIth nearly 1% of the over half million posts logged on Basenotes since it's April, 2007 inception by our own Netherlander BrothaG, a small but dedicated group of players has had a lot of fun and interaction. So Guess The Fragrance By The Picture gets my vote as one of the Best on Basenotes.

I nominate Ruggles thread that started out as a Jicky / Mouchier De Monsieur comparison and then kind of evolved into a discussion on aristocracy, distinction and class - in relation to fragrance. Fascinating thread:

I always enjoy seeing pictures of people's collections: "Post A Picture of Your Scents"
http://community.basenotes.net/showthread.php?t=191137

Also, the recurring SotW posts by Somerville Metro Man where he analyses and summarises the SOTD threads for each week is one of the highlights of this forum in my opinion. The last one is here: http://community.basenotes.net/showthread.php?t=212046
post #6 of 67
there are many - for starters:

wiczani's vetiver redux;
http://community.basenotes.net/showt...=vetiver+redux

purplebird's montale thread:
http://community.basenotes.net/showt...+lookup+thread

more to follow

Great suggestion! SotW is a must. I was actually getting nervous when I didn't see it due to the recent server upgrade outage. And if there were some way to make old SotDs more organized - especially for old days when we are post-posting, that would be awesome.

This one sparked some inside jokes for months to come: Indie_Guy's "wore rive gauche & got bitten" thread.

2nd that, that was a great thread .
I'd suggest two, but it would need changed each month:

What have you bought (month, year)?

What have you tried (month, year)?

The "what have you tried" is new in June, I think. But I find myself going to them often since they usually contain mini-reviews.
First choice:

I have been on that thread from the very start and is it really amazing what I have learned there. Not only about fragrances and houses, but also about history, art, nature and even chemistry.

Seriously addictive and fun.
"A Tribute to the Classics of Scent" provides a fine reading.I wish for a revival of this thread...

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I was a newbie when I posted that thread, somehow it got so many people thinking and contributing some very exciting ideas. The house of Guerlain never fails to impress and inspire.
I think these two should be merged and sticky-ed:

Internet Sites - DISCOUNT ONLY
The BIG list of online stores - your input needed!

and the (in)famous NEVER shop at 1stperfume.com !!! might should be considered.
Thanks, people, for mentioning my threads Note Identification Project and Montale Reviews. I'm truly glad that you are enjoying them. I've had a nice time writing them.

I do love it when people go in-depth about subjects.
Among my favorite threads were these classic case studies (which have already been mentioned):

Vibrant Violet - Best Sandalwood:
http://community.basenotes.net/showt...ght=sandalwood

wicozani - Vetiver Redux:
http://community.basenotes.net/showt...hlight=vetiver

Another favorite was this fun guessing game:
Twolf - 3 x 3 Blind Sniff
http://community.basenotes.net/showt...=197582&page=2
You will have to search for this thread in several different places, because it was separated into sub-threads, also.

My favorite, most recent philosophy threads:
seattlelight - My Attitude Adjustment to the New
http://community.basenotes.net/showthread.php?t=211563
and
Quarry - What have you learned/figured out lately?
http://community.basenotes.net/showthread.php?t=209882

I hate to nominate another one of my own, but I still have one drop of perfume in a little vial that travelled 10,000 miles. This happened at a difficult time in my life, and Riannon send me the thread in the mail, and I still cry when I read it.
Djedi - A True Fragrance Experience
http://community.basenotes.net/showthread.php?t=194823

Plus there have been so many funny, funny threads on this forum, but I cannot remember their specific names, and the list of previous posts has been truncated, so I can't find them. I still want to thank everyone for all their clever remarks that made me laugh so many times over the years.
There are quite a few that I check on a regular basis, but my very favorite has to be:

Guess the Fragrance by the Picture.

It is definitely addictive.
For another selection from Château Indie, of more recent vintage but still delicious, may I recommend Dame de la Charrue?
The new Mainstream vs. Niche: A Statistical Effort is something I'd love to see more people dive into. It's getting good comment. Not sure if it's been done before as a discussion, but the poll and measurement angle (Irish is adamant that we actually count frags) makes it better than anecdotal and far more interesting.
Ah, yes. The Before Basenotes thread, also known as the Amber thread. Classic!

Purplebird - that Djedi thread is awesome. It's kind of like Basenotes Female Fragrance Discussion: The Movie.

Another semi-recent/revived thread: What scent led you to basenotes?.
hirch_duckfinder's thread:
Classic Eau De Cologne type frags

Also, anything posted by scentemental.
And how about those Teasers Twolf used to do? Numbering in the sixties when she quit, I think.

And Tang's amazing Name the (color) Bottles??
Joining my vote for the "Name this Bottle" thread.

Tao, I quit at 99! One shy of a hundred.
Now, the Boss said: ...post your favourites.....so I am not cheating am I?

Next nomination: Purplebird's Note Identification Project
This is food for future Basenotes generations.
Vetiver Redux: A brilliant thread, which not only discusses a wide variety of vetiver scents, but also pits them one-against-another in a lively competition!

A Comprehensive List of Jasmin/Jasmine Scents: IMHO, Norma Kamali JazmÃ*n rules! (closely followed by MPG Jasmin).
I nominate two threads. One is on the male fragrances discussion board, and one is on the female fragrances discussion board.

"You know you're a Basenoter when. . ."
Male Fragrance Discussion Board: http://community.basenotes.net/showthread.php?t=209315

"You Might Be A Fragrance Junkie If. . ."
Female Fragrance Discussion Board: http://community.basenotes.net/showthread.php?p=1219740

How could I forget! Someone was really helpful in pointing me to this thread when I asked about decanting.

How do you decant?

Been pondering this for a few days. "Are you a diva in scent only?" turned up some of the most interesting and unpredictably revealing responses.

And Tang's Name the Bottles here: http://community.basenotes.net/showthread.php?t=205434

I'd like to nominate a thread thought out and started by my Dragonfriend Riannon, which was a great event at that date - the fabulous Lutens week:

Seven days of feasting on Lutens: http://www.community.basenotes.net/s...d.php?t=191397

Yeees! I second the nomination for Twolf's teasers and also for P-bird's Note Identification project (have to catch up on that one).

I second the Blind Sniff Contests. Just reading thru them, I learned a lot.
It's like watching a reality TV show, but not scripted, and so much more informative!
And another vote for Twolf's Blind Sniff Contests: http://community.basenotes.net/showthread.php?t=198338

Awesome thread!

Thank you my dear Lady, but we really did that week together. Our thread! Where would I have been without you.

I just read every post again and those contributions of Rtamara are certainly providing insight and dedication

Absolutely! Thanks for pointing out this classic. (Still LMAO!)
If someone hasn't already nominated it, I nominate Purplebird's Note Identification Thread:

http://community.basenotes.net/showthread.php?t=210096

And if someone *has* already, then I second the nomination.
I'd like to second Quarry's What Have You Learned Thread, particularly for Purplebird's May 7th post that begins with the words, "Never say never." It is very sage advice that can be applied to many things in life, and is something I've gone back and read several times to hopefully permanently impress these wise words upon my stubborn, occasionally foolish brain. In fact, if you'll indulge me, I'll just paste verbatim:

Never say never. (I cannot wear...)
Never say always. (My favorite is...)
Learn to let go. (Reformulation. Discontinuation.)
Hoarding is a form of paranoia. (See previous.)
There will always be something else. (See two previous.)
Friends make everything better. (Basenotes. I am not alone in this.)
Natural extracts smell way different from synthetics. (Both are necessary.)
Oooh this thread is good. I had no clue about these teasers! So interesting.

I also loved reading those blind sniff threads I miss them now.
I just can't decide...
There are many that are very good!

Thanks Oud Girl. Lord knows I try.
And I appreciated this bit of wisdom from Quarry:
"The personal processing of scent--taking in, examining, contemplating--is a journey I never imagined or would have respected, until it happened to me. And now I understand that even when my study or growth seems to have stalled, the subconscious and the marketplace and others' artistic invention continue to move forward, so we need never fear the end of stimulus or the arrival of boredom. Man ... that got heavy real fast. What's in this coffee, and can I have another cup?"
