along with fragrances, i'm a HUGE believer in the credibility of automobiles as one of the character defining possessions. They are TRULY works of art.

Cute! I have a Schwinn too, but it won't get me very far, biking 15 miles to work, I'd arrive like a sweaty horse after a race. It's uphill all the way. lol This is a side note, but people on bike here are terrible, don't follow traffic laws the majority of the time. Many a time I have seen then go right through stop signs and stop lights, not signal, go the wrong direction in traffic, etc. I'd be scared to ride my bike in the city.

I've been driving a 1990 Toyota Camry wagon around up until about a month ago when I bought a 2006 Honda Metropolitan. It's perfect for driving around now, though when there's 3 feet of snow on the ground, I'm sure I'll go crawling back to my car. Hopefully gas will be at a reasonable price by then.

Same here. I've never had a driving lesson and certainly don't feel the desire to start now. Cars maim, kill, pollute the environment, and turn most people into selfish and egotistical c***s.

We may be in the minority but it's definitely something to be proud of.

Time to take a walk...

As someone who lives in an area where it takes 15 minutes of driving to eat (including groceries), work, or play, I always find a car-free existence remarkable & impressive...

You're kidding, right? You should never define yourself in terms of any possession, or look at it as a reflection of what you are as a person. You could lose all your possessions, and it should not impact how you think of yourself in any way. If it does, then you are on truly perilous ground. Think about this: A thousand years ago, no one owned a car. In fact, most people alive owned almost nothing. Did that reflect on their worth as people? Did it mean they had no character? God, I hope not ...

San Francisco is awesome. You can get almost anywhere within the city on foot, and BART and Muni can get you everywhere else. Is that Temple Nightclub on Howard St just a pale shadow of what DV8 was in the 90's, or is it worth its salt?

first of all, nice porsche

i think you took my statements WAY out of context. i never said anyone is defined by what they drive.....HOWEVER if one is gonna own a car, then it does say something about that person.

Cars ARE works of art......most definitely. If you can't see that....then it's unfortunate, IMO.....especially as you own one of the more iconic cars of our lifetime. Sure they are engineering masterpieces....BUT they are also creations, with great attention to detail and form.

Thanks. It's a very fun car to drive. I usually keep the PSM (Porsche Stability Management) turned on, to keep from accidentally killing myself in it. I've only turned the PSM off on the track, where things are largely predictable.

Hmmmm ... OK. That phrase "character-defining" is a bit ... troubling. That's what I was reacting to, primarily. The most impressive people I have ever met in my life either don't drive at all or don't care much what they drive. (I'm obviously not one of those people. )

Sure, agreed. I'm just suggesting that you keep their importance in perspective.

I'm having a bit of a spiritual crisis with this question...

I went car shopping today…

After doing my research I decided to return to my roots, which is good old-fashioned American muscle. I’ve owned two mustangs and a camaro and various big trucks over the years, and I totally prefer US engineering over Japanese or European. This may be because of my size or it may be because I just like to buy things that put our citizens to work. I don’t begrudge anyone else their choices, that’s just my preference.

I went to 3 ford dealerships to check out the 2009 mustangs, and got the same BS run around from everyone about 100 over invoice and what a great deal blah blah blah. (These clowns don’t know who they are dealing with yet)

At the third, they had a 2007 f150 pickup that sticker price was 31000, but they were asking 20. It’s not exactly what I’d pick, but it’s a good solid piece of gear that I’d be totally happy to drive. They said total was 22 out the door. Translation: I can get it for 18-19.

They also had just the mustang I wanted, convertible, triple black, and the sticker price is 36k. They offered it out the door for 33. Translation: not a penny more than 29.

But then, in a cruel twist of fate…

They had a 2007 Saleen…

Tricked out to the gills…

465 horsepower…

Track ready… (yes I am certified)

Only 500 were made…

Babe magnet…

Cop magnet…

Guaranteed I’d be replacing the tires once every 3 months with the way I’d drive it…

Sticker 62,000…

Asking 40,000, total 43 out the door. Translation:38 or no go…

Bastards!

Now I am asking myself “what would Jesus do?” (that’s hay-soos for those of you in our audience that don’t know many Mexicans)

I called my brother and asked him for advice on this as I am torn…

He told me “buy the truck and rake them over the coals on it.” (polite version)

To which I deftly replied, “You are no f@&k^ng help at all, if I wanted practical advice I’d have called Dad.”

He’s right of course. I have been waiting for the housing market to bottom out for the opportunity to pick up a bargain and either buy or build. The saleen is almost 400 more a month than the truck and that’s at 60 months as opposed to 48 and that would put a fair dent in the amount of house I could buy…

about 50k worth...

And If I am buying a house, I need a truck to haul crap.

Goals…

Or a performance built, 465 HP chick-magnet…

I’m torn…

:P :P :P :P

I love Honda cars. My car before the 2006 Accord was a black 1998 Civic 2-door. I used Mobil-1 synthetic oil in every oil change, and I never had a single thing go wrong with the car right up until I sold it with 150K miles. It was the most reliable car I've ever owned, and I'm hoping the Accord gives me the same level of service.

Astaroth, you pretty much stole the thread now That is a nice car, and I'm sure when I have the money for one, I will not think twice. The idea of any car other than the 911 wouldn't even cross my mind.

everso, Trebor and Jamie do have a point. My biggest problem with cars is pollution (I'm convinced that the idiots inside are the ones that kill though, not the cars). Driving a nice car is very enjoyable in the right conditions, and for some people a car is a life necessity, but still, their point is valid.

Nice Audi you have, what have you done to it besides those wheals (which I like a lot, btw)?

Personally, I would rather put my money in something that appreciates in value. Car values plummet to the earth as if they were in a Looney Tunes cartoon and got thrown off a cliff with an anvil tied to their leg. Besides, old clunkers just have more personality than fancy, frilly cars. Whatever floats your boat though.

I drive a 2002 Ford Escort Zx2. Forest Green. I love it.

Both my Honda Accord and Porsche 911 are fully paid for. I would never finance a depreciating asset (e.g. car, vacation, fragrances , etc) unless absolutely necessary to live my life well. Having said that, I have actually tried to convince myself that I need Profumum Thundra to live well, so these terms are subject to a bit of interpretation.

Astaroth, my inital username was "Nightjessamine" on perfume forums. I've always had nightjessamine bushes in my garden in Africa and it's the only plant I really miss here is Europe, the one I'd like to have in a pot inside the house during the winter.

The bush doesn't look like anything special but it's tiny flower open at night and have an exquisite smell, much more nicer than Egyptian Jasmine. The French names for it, "Belle de Nuit" or "Galant de Nuit" were usernames which weren't available on the specific forum I was trying to get in, reason why I took the english word.

After a few month, friends there were calling me NightJasmine buy error (because of the avatar I guess) or Night. Night is still there, I got used to it and ... kept it !

It's always good to be the one lucky enough to grab a very common word as a username; it makes for easy humor down the road.

No front license plate? Are they not required in your state, sloan_8013? I know there are some states which do not require them. California is becoming quite strict about it, since they want to be able to use their automated roadside cameras to photograph and identify you driving through red lights. I recently got a "fix-it" ticket for no front license plate, so I always notice these things now.

Thaifighter, the Saleen would be sweet, but I have to say I LOVE my Mustang SO much! It's a true joy to drive and I get tons of compliments on it. And you would have 10,000+ (not counting the insurance and the price of frequent tire changes ) to put towards your house.

I spent almost a year researching sports cars and test driving them before "pulling the trigger" on a 911, and anyone who has followed any of the temperature/storage fragrance threads knows that I am excruciatingly detail-oriented. But in any case, these cars should never be impulse purchases.

The days of the gasoline-powered car are surely numbered, and we are seeing the start of that impending doom now with current oil prices. Cars for individuals are just not a scalable solution for moving billions of people and products around. (Just ask people breathing the air in Beijing these days.) The sociological upheaval the demise of cars will create is going to be interesting to watch, particularly in cities like Los Angeles where people cannot conceive of not owning one. It's certain that Europe and many parts of Asia will find the transition much easier than the United States will.

That whole "babe magnet" thing is a potential minefield. As tempting as it might be to buy a great sports car for that reason, it's a good way to end up dating (or even marrying) a woman you will not be happy with, particularly if you happen to not be the best judge of character. It's safer to get tied up with a woman first, then buy the car purely for the rush it gives you when you're driving it.

There's nothing you can do about the "cop magnet" factor. Unless you decide to only fully enjoy the car on a track, resign yourself to the fact that you will get speeding tickets. Stay sober, buy a Valentine One radar detector ... and learn to pray.

Most States in the South (AL, GA, TN, FL, NC, SC, KY, MS, LA) do not require front license plates. Maybe thats because we like to reserve the front plate for our favorite NASCAR driver, SEC school, Harley-Davidson, or an airbrush license plate with our name.

everso, it's got nothing to do with ignorance or missing out - it was a decision I made of my own freewill. As much as I am against driving, for the reasons previously mentioned, much of my angst on this subject stem from attitudes such as yours. Yes, I was born with a penis but, based on this fact, it doesn't automatically mean that I should know how to drive (or even have an interest in cars). Like most things in life, we all have a choice and I made mine. So, next time, when a someone (especially a man) states they don't have any interest in driving (or even cars in general), show some respect because there's nothing to be ashamed of.

Cars are a necessity to us, but I'm not really a "car person". I don't really care what I drive as long it's reliable. I'm always happy if someone else will drive while I look at the scenery, chat, look at the roadmap, play cd's, etc. My husband prefers to drive, so we're happy on a road trip. It sounds so stereotypically gender-roled, but that's the way it worked out. My sense of direction is abysmal.

the Prius is quite a scam actually....you can get better mileage from some of the new Diesels that are on the way....and also from some of the other smaller cars.

the problem with the Prius is, that MOST people never get the mileage they are promised, because most people do not drive in a testing ground such as the one Toyota uses to get their mileage figures....
