Hurricane Season 2008

It's hurricane season!

With tropical storm taking aim at Florida and many of our southern basenoters preparing for the storm, here's a thread where you can check in to let us know how you are doing.

Here's a link to the National Hurricane Center: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ You can click on it for up-to-the minute storm statistics.

Gives us a shout out & let us know you are OK.

Thanks for the concern RHM. We seem to be right in it's projected path here in Tampa. Fortunately, it seems like it's not picking up strength very rapidly. Let's hope that trend continues and it's just a big blowhard.

In the meantime I am stocking up on rum and hurricane punch mix.

I'm used to them, I break out my surfboard ( I get to use Mr. Zog's Sex Wax) Hurricanes Donna, Betsy and Agnes were probably the scariest here in my neighborhood, Andrew was devasting

I think i have enough fragrances to get me through the storm .

Sadly, i'm like most floridians...i won't start panicking until the hurricane is at our doorstep!

Now is the time when I really miss living in Fort Myers. The only hurricane that truly frightened me was Andrew, for most of the rest I can say the body surfing was awesome! And you find the most beautiful shells washed up on the beaches afterward.

Mom is looking forward to taking a day off work tomorrow. She is otherwise similarly unconcerned. She's retired, but it didn't stick and, feeling restless, she took up a part time job working for an insurance company that does not provide hurricane coverage.

Also, I like wunderground.com for weather info. Their section on Fay has nifty, animated radar and satellite maps:

Here's a fairly high def web cam on Ft. Laud. beach. Updates every 20 seconds.

Spoke with Mom this morning. Fay came in just south of where she is in Fort Myers and basically served to clean up the loose, hanging palm fronds and the toilet paper from a neighbor's house that had been teepee'd in honor of the first day of school (I posted a pic on the ladies' SotD). Both the newspaper and the mail were delivered. She's enjoying her day off from work and hopes to get some ironing done.

Not much to speak of with Fay here in Miami. A little wind and rain. The wind cleaned up my Washingtonian Palms since we can't remove dead fronds because they are so high, so that was all the cleanup that we had to do this morning. Went for an hour's walk with my husband which was kind of cool in the wind and sprinklings. I lived through Andrew and I honestly don't want another one like it.

Yep, she's a bust here in Tampa too. Gusty winds and no rain yet. With any luck this will be our big storm for this year.

How are our Gulf coast members doing?

Mom had periodic downpours of rain and gusty wind for most of the day as Gustav's bands passed over southwest Florida. I'm very worried about the folks around Louisiana. Flooding is sure to be awful.

Tampa had big whitecaps throughout the bay and the water level was way up yesterday. Normally, it's glassy and calm.

With any luck Gustav will pull it's punch. It's Cat 2 right now as it comes ashore. Lets hope the storm surge isn't too bad.

I agree, but one thing I've learned here is that projected paths and decreasing category ratings can turn on a dime Be safe my friends.

With the peak of the hurricane season still in front of us this season is fast becoming one for the books. Over the years I have had over a half dozen of these 75mph+ storms pass over me without major damage to home or health. Others have not been as lucky. My heart goes out to them.

My wife and I were coming back from Cancun in 2005 on Carnival's Inspiration when Katrina was coming up the gulf. I was very nervous and concerned We were 3 decks above the waterline and we could see white caps splashing against our cabin porthole. The ship was diverted from Tampa to Ft. Lauderdale. We were very fortunate. I like Ft. Lauderdale better than Tampa.

This is an interesting map showing all major hurricane points of entry into the US mainland from 1899 through 1996
