Erasing The Serial Number

Have you noticed that the discount stores sell perfumes that had their serial numbers scratched and erased? I bought Chanel, Hermes and other brands at these stores, and they invariably came with a scratched area on the back of the bottle.

Why do the stores do such a thing? Or is it the authorized seller who does it? Maybe the authorized seller does it because the manufacturer could discover the origin of the product and cancel their license, if they knew that the products were handed to unauthorized sellers.

I imagine its so you can't take the bottle back to a retail outlet for a credit or exchange. The perfume counters in department stores are very liberal in their exchange policies for perfumes you buy there (or get as gifts), but I imagine they don't want to take back products that are close outs. I imagine the manufacturer does this.

I think it's about not being able to buy it at say Marshalls at half price and then return it at Bloomingdales for full retail. They do the same with books at discounters- there's usually a discrete mark on there to tell a retailer that the book was remaindered and not sold retail.
