Some "notes" from my conversation with Kilian Hennessy

Thread Starter
Well, I was the first one at the South Coast Plaza Saks today to see Kilian Hennessy.

First off, I have to admit that he is one heck of a guy... he has a great personality, a smooth character, and he's smart. And he looks even better in person than he does in the press pictures.

Still, I had five questions for Kilian, ranging from critics to competition. Here they are, plus there's some exciting news for fans of the line at the end of the interview:

  1. Q: "As you previously worked for L'Oreal and YSL Beaute, what do you think is the state of the designer fragrance industry today?" A: "Bad... it used to be that companies built launches like Chanel No. 5, Angel, Jean Paul Gaultier, and such, launches with staying power. Now, launches tend to lose 50% of their sales volume after the first year. And now you have celebrity fragrances, which do even worse."
  2. Q: "Brands like Giorgio Armani and Thierry Mugler are getting into the niche market with lines like Armani Prive and Miror Miror. Do you see this as a positive?" A: "Yes. I like the Armani Prive scents, and I like Thierry Mugler, too, and this is good for the niche market as a whole."
  3. Q: "In the book 'Perfumes: The Guide' by Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez, many of your fragrances are rated highly, while many other niche fragrances like most of the Creed line are rated very low. And Creed has an incredible PR machine! Do you take this as a compliment?" A: "Of course! But I also noticed that the two perfumes that Sidonie Lancesseur created for me, Straight to Heaven and Cruel Intentions, got only two out of five stars, whereas the ones created by Calice Becker all got four stars becuase he loves Calice Becker's creations. Still, I welcome perfume critics... the industry needs more of them. Look at movies: what if there was only one or two movie critics, all giving the same films the same ratings? That's why I welcome more critics."
  4. Q: "Besides your own fragrances, what other fragrances do you wear?" A: None! It's not good publicity to wear anything but your own creations! But before I launched my line, I wore Eau Sauvage by Dior, Guerlain Vetiver, and Chanel Cuir de Russie, among others.
  5. Q: You just launched your line at the Saks at South Coast Plaza. Will we see it at the Saks in Indianapolis eventually, as I'm from Indiana? A: We just launched in San Francisco last Thursday, and in Beverly Hills this past Monday. We're going to be launching in Las Vegas this Monday, and in Florida this winter. One Saks location where you will not see us is the New York flagship, as Bergdorf (Goodman) has the (department store) exclusive. Since Indianapolis is one of the Top 10 beauty doors for Saks Fifth Avenue, the plan is to be there by this time next year, and we plan to launch a new fragrance in that timeframe... possibly even there.

Oh, and one more thing: I finally tried Straight to Heaven, loved it a ton, got a bottle on the spot... Kilian himself even signed the case. It truly is a "black masterpiece".

This is great stuff! Thanks for the effort and sharing it with us. A++

Thanks MFfan310. Great reporting (you should be a journalist, if you aren't already).

I'm certain Straight to Heaven has liquid crack in it...it's one of those scents that one sniff is all you need and you need more! Enjoy your (highly limited edition, with signature) bottle.

Really excellent interview. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for posting that MFfan310. It was a nice read!

I haven't tried any of the By Kilian fragrances yet, but some of the stuff you guys are saying ("liquid crack"-- dammit Mike, why'd you have to do that! ) is making me take notice.

I just realized tonite (flipping thru Allure magazine) that Killian Hennessey is part of the Hennessey family as in LVMH 'Hennessey'. Duh...I didn't realize that at all. Does that mean By Killian is an LVMH brand?
You lucky duck! I LOVE my Straight to Heaven and actually think LT is a dunce for the 2 star rating

They do have molasses slow customer service though. At least I smell great while waiting on replies
post #8 of 43
like i said before....STH = best linear scent ever created.

Absolutely.. What you get out of the bottle stays true and perfect, yet complex, through its life. Really pretty fascinating. Most of the time linear is frowned upon, but with this one I wouldn't want it different.
That's a welcome surprise to see a launch here in Vegas at Saks. I was intending to get Cruel Intentions in LA @ the Scent Bar in October when (hopefully) I hit a film festival. Now I can (hopefully) pick it up next Friday.

Funny about question #1--sounds sort of like Hollywood and blockbusters with no staying power.
Who? LoL, loved the Creed slam you inserted in there.
Had work today and wasn't able to hit Saks this morning but I passed by tonight to check out the line Kilian Had. All I can say is STH will definitely be one of my top 10's, as soon as i can afford a bottle that is. Hahaha.

Thanks for sharing your experience MFfan. Mucho appreciated.
Nice interview and thanks for the effort. Kilian seems like a cool guy, but sadly I just couldn't get into his stuff.
I was so disappointed I had to work the hours he was there! Thank you for posting the notes.
I thought it was nice that he named some fragrances that he admired from other brands....

.
good questions. They were quite insightful.
First of all, MFfan310, thanks for sharing this invaluable Q&A with one of the the new movers and shakers of the fragrance industry. Your questions were very astute.
Some of us here at Basenotes have been accused of driving Mr. Turin away from the boards with comments similar to Mr. Hennessey's. I'm glad that this observation of Turin's prejudices came from an insider.
Thanks MFfan310. I enjoyed it. I have to say I like StH. Makes me curious about the other ones, f.e. Cruel Intentions.

StH shares strong similarieties with Frapins Caravelle Epice. Both boozy, spice. StH being the more subtle one. I love Caravelle also but there's a tiny plasticy note in it that bothers me and that StH luckily has not.But if you can get passed that note, the Frapin is a wonderfull scent in the spice, booze, genre.

Thanks for the convo excerpt!

I too love StH and keep going back for more. It'll be a problem when I need a refill as there's no way to get it filled up again here in Thailand.

I am so happy you are writing about this. I was ready to go, I asked for a vacation day about three weeks ago, I was giddy, happy, that was all I could talk about. Well, on Wednesday a VP of the company I work for decided that I should brief him about something on Thursday. I begged, my boss begged to no avail, the meeting was set for Thursday and that was that!!
By the time I came out of the silly meeting, with many action items to do, it would have been too late to go. I don't remember being so angry in a long time. I was so angry, I closed the door of my office and cried for a while...

Anyway, thank you so much for sharing.

I have Cruel Intentions and it is such an amazing long lasting scents. It is really mysterious in my opinion as the scent just wafts around you in a dark and woodsy way.

I just pre-ordered the new release which is set to ship September 11th called Prelude to love. It is based on Citrus, ginger, pepper and Iris and on first reviews I have read, they state this is actually the best one of the line. I haven't tried it but since I love this line, I just ordered it blind and will be getting it from Bergdorf in the middle of September.

Lastly, I was reading an article interview with Kilian (I am trying to find it to post it) and he stated that after the release of prelude to love, he will be offering a surprise release of something in November. I have no Idea what it will be but it sounds exciting. If anyone is going to visit him at the Vegas meet or greet please ask him about the Surprise November release and what it could be. Cant wait.

A very enjoyable read, thanks!

He obviously has good taste!

Straight to Heaven & Cruel IntentionsI had been my favorites of the line (prior to reading Perfumes: The Guide).

For me, the question has been: do I want to pay the entrance fee into this club? And will I want a refill later on? There seems to be a "signature scent" philosophy to the line...
Ok. I found the article speaking about the special November release. You can read through the interview or go to the section right under the picture of the candle and see what he says. Sounds intriguing. Again, whoever goes to see his visit to the Vegas Saks, please ask him about the surprise November release. Thanks.

Wow , great post !

Very interesting .. the guy seems to be nice also.

I ve read somewhere that the two frags with "heaven" in the name were marketed as male fragrances, the two with "love" in the name were as female fragrances, and the two remaining as unisex frags.

BN lists all of the frags as unisex. Someone to explain me ? Are love and beyond love wearable for men ? worth sampling ?

I received yesterday my two 5 ml samples of the two heaven , thinking initially they were the only male or unisex.

Tbh, i was absolutely sure i was going to love both of them.. And i have been disappointed.

I found a taste of heaven really really not pleasant. I did not like it at all, there is some weird note that i hate in it. A huge deception, and i would rate it 3/10.

Straight to Heaven is much better for me, but still not as huge as i was expecting to.. Long lasting what is nice, but not too fond of the smell, still way better than the first one. 7/10.
I had like 15 samples that arrived yesterday, and I never had so many great surprises before with my samples shipments (thread to come) .
The killians were at the bottom of my list at the end of the tests, when i expected these two to be at the top (also why i ordered directly 5 ml samples, that were expensive..) .

Disappointed so far...
I found the entire line to be unisex myself; albeit some of the scents do have more traditionally feminine notes than others. The favorite on my skin by far was A Taste of Heaven. I purchased it on the spot & although it was the most I'd ever spent for a fragrance, I don't regret the purchase one bit. AToH remains a favorite & to this day I get tons of compliments whenever I wear it.

Here's the strange thing, I had never owned a "lavender" fragrance before, never wore one. This was my very first. Somehow it just "works" for me, despite the fact that Killian told me this was his "daytime" scent.
Go figure.

It only proves that an individual needs to try the scents on their own skin.

Also, there is definitely a difference between the samples I've tried from tiny vials where I've daubed the scent on & in store testing where I've sprayed the scent on. Besides the obvious of getting more on the skin with the spray, I think the scent becomes more oxygenated, & therefore more "open" when sprayed.

Great interview.

Thanks for sharing it with us.

As a follow-up to this post, Saks is now offering the By Kilian fragrances on their website as of today.

Notably, they list them as "exclusively at Saks"... by that, they probably mean national department store exclusive (i.e.: take that, Neiman Marcus).
looks like they won't ship until 10.12

Oh I am... and it's still in my top few favorites without wavering
I just snagged one of those Jubilation XXV 30ml deals, so I can save for a bottle of A Taste of Heaven (I wore it yesterday and really enjoyed it... one of the only lavender scents I've tried that I really got into)

I Just received my order of the new prelude to love. It is exclusive to Bergdorf right now, I think until next month. It was also signed by Kilian himself as he was at bergdorfs last week in New york launching the scent. The SA got him to sign the box and the bottle for me with a nice note on the box written out to me. Really awesome I must say.

The scent is really nice. I bought it blind but it was worth it. People will like this one for sure. It starts with a blasts of citrus (Lime, Orange and Bergamont) After that you get a nice spice from the ginger and a faint pepper note in it that works really well with the citrus top notes. The scent gets a slightly powdery background note that is lent from the iris which is really really nice.

Imagine citrus with pepper with powdery iris. But there is also this amazing note that I have heard people mention to resemble golden apple. I can smell exactly what they are taking about. This is really a great release from the Kilian line which i love as I now own Prelude to love, Cruel intentions and A taste of Heaven. Amazing!!
Which Florida Saks will Kilian be offered at? Does anyone know?
a interview, well done!! excellent read MFFan!! Thank you!
I think Straight to Heaven is crazy good - I just love the booze and patchouli notes.
To me this seems like the ultimate clubbing scent.
you got me wanting to try Straight to heaven again
post #39 of 43
I love Prelude and Straight to Heaven. It is hard to decide which one to get next. It is going to be a while, because I bought Cruel Intentions last month. Met. Mr. Kilian. He seems like a very nice person. At first when I went by the by Kilian counter I did not recognize him and thought he was a SA. We talked for a few minutes, explained about this perfumes and seemed very down-to-earth kind of person.

I don't know, but you can go to the Saks website and chose to be notified of "in-store events". If by Kilian is launching at a store near you, it will be advertised as an "in-store event"
I remember this thread! It seems like so long ago. I am freaking in unconditional love of Straight to Heaven. I really can't wait to make the purchase for a bottle when I get paid on Monday.
ok i tested this again over the weekend with my sample from Aedes and sorry Straight to Heaven is just plain boring like the first time I tested, it is not a bad scent, but it is not a great scent

I just cannot see spending that much for this
post #43 of 43
I would think Dadeland or Bal Harbour Saks would be the most likely stores but I could be way off. Also I think they may be late on the event, I thought that they wanted to do it in late 08.

By the way STH is one of those scents, either you get you or you don't. I literally have to force myself to wear other frags. Left to my own devices I'd probably OD on this stuff. I would definitely buy one of those 1 liter kegs if the price were anywhere near reasonably priced.

Worst part is already own all the kilians I want form the current releases. So I'd have to show up in the store with the bottles already. Im sure the SA's will love that.
