Lately I've rediscovered Polo Green... simply a classic that smells great... except for the obvious 80's ties What other scents are similar to Polo?
Envy.
Esencia Loewe.

Fou d' Absinthe has a little Polo scent to it... but the sweetness ruins it for me

I love Polo too! I think it is a beautiful perfume, elegant and very manly. Polo and Azzaro were the first good perfumes that I've ever owned.

Try Creed Epicea and Trussardi Uomo.
It might be just me... I seem to say this everytime I talk about Polo Green, but it isn't the same scent I wore and loved in the 80s.

Granted I was just a kid, but my brother and his buddies REEKED of it, and the smell was definitely a stage of my awakening! What I smell of Polo these days is similar, but there is a synthetic smelling base in there. Top notes are all fine, but the drydown just ain't what I remember. Pity, really.
Wouldn't surprise me if ol' Lifschitz cheaped out on the goods; seems that is what happened to most all of the Ralph Lauren empire, if one asks me.

Do you have to contaminate every Polo thread with your negativity? Is it possible you're wrong? Impressions from the past are generally not very accurate. Do you think it's intelligent to insult people based on surmise?

I always have and always will love Polo - In addition to my own bottle, I have my grandfather's bottle that he purchased in the late 80s and it still smells fantastic. This is one of the only fragrances I know that only requires after shave application to give off sillage for hours.

Paco Rabanne Pour Homme is similar. But I still prefer Polo. I don't own a bottle, but I've been glancing at vintage bottles that pop up on Ebay ever so often.

You forgot Eau d'Kermit (It's not easy being green).

Polo is Polo to me! Meaning how it smelled in the 80's is the same way it smells to me now.

I like it but for some reason dare not break it out until October 1st or else it would be like wearing white after labor day.

Sung Homme though does not smell like Polo is in the same family - so you may want to give it a try.

Moss Breches is a pricey but very luxe variation on the Polo Green theme.

I used to wear Polo Green in law school circa 1988-91. I bought a bottle recently. It smells exactly the same to me. Same top notes. Same dry down. Same longevity.

To each their nose.

I know exacly how Polo used to smell in the 80's. And I can guarantee you that the perfume today is exactly the same as in the past. There was no reformulation.

Polo remains the same.

Polo Green is one of those scents that's been around for eons and just won't go away... for a good reason. It's a classic, and people still just won't let it go. And that's a good thing, in this case. Heck, there's a post on the Sephora blog on a girl who has fond memories of a guy wearing Polo Green.

While we're on the topic of Polo Green, Ralph Lauren will launch a Polo Modern Reserve 30th Anniversary Limited Edition of Polo Green next month, with a reworked juice that's "a modern interpretation of the original". (IIRC, it's going to be a Macy's exclusive.)

That's exciting news. The original Polo, to me, is a scent that while being really well constructed, just carries way too much baggage for me to really enjoy. (or perhaps it's me who carries the baggage! )
It just always conveys "loud and lowbrow" to me. I will be really excited to smell the reworking.

I've always been a big fan of Ralph Lauren fragrances (Polo Blue, especially). I hope he does something good with this, and I'll be looking for it.

Envy smells nothing like Polo. But Envy and Esencia Loewe (which I have not sampled) both appear green. Envy is green juice in a clear bottle, EL is a green bottle.

So when OP asks what other scents are similar to Polo and you deadpan give him two other "green" scents, I thought you were "funning." So, I made the obligatory sesame street reference.

WTF?!!!!! Kermit?! KERMIT?!

His name is Rene! Rene the frog!

"In Portugal, he's Cocas, o Sapo (sapo means toad). In Latin America, his name is la rana René (René the Frog). In Spain, Kermit is named Gustavo. In France and the Canadian province of Quebec, he is known as Kermit la grenouille. In Brazil, his name is Caco, o Sapo. In the Arabic Middle Eastern version, he's known as Kamel (not to be confused with the animal, camel - jamal in Arabic. Kamel is a common Arabic male name that means "perfect")."

Pick a name damn it!

I have been lied to my whole life

To me Envy smells like a modernised metrosexual version of Polo Green. On the other hand envy is also reminiscent of Musc Ravageur for a while.

He appeared sesame street?! WTF?!
I googled Gonzo and I only get pornographic websites?!
EDIT: Ok his name is gonzo...

While there's no doubt that some manufacturers "reformulate" scents, here's something to consider the next time one thinks a particular fragrance smells "like it used to":

Smell is but one of the five senses. As we age over a period of time, our senses and their respective abilities diminish. It's true of hearing. It true of sight. Tastes have also been known to change. Not sure about feeling sensation, but I wouldn't doubt it as well. That being said, there's a high probability that the sense of smell changes over time as well. And finally, let's not forget about how delicate memories are as well.
well I certainly am delighted that everyone's precise recollection of Polo from the 80s is what they smell today! I wish it were the same case for me. this will be the last "contaminated" comment from me.

I spritzed some Polo on last week when I was walking though a department store. It really is one of my all-time favorite fragrances, and it did bring back a lot of fond memories. I think I may have to pick up a small bottle to wear occasionally.
Polo was my #1 as a kid and teen. But I have to agree with some that say that it is a little off. I sprayed some the other day and there was a "darkness" or overwhelming factor that never used to hit. Still good stuff but there was something in the iniotial blast that threw me.
My husband wears it most of the time. I've tried others on him, but he always goes back to it. This summer he got into 'Eau Sauvage' which worked well. He's worn it for about as long as it's been out, 20yrs? He bought it by accident. An SA gave it to him on a card and he liked it. Before that, he wore nothing, maybe 'Aramis'.

The point of my rambling; I have tried many samples on him, but he really wears this the most, likes it best, and I'm liking it more on him. I'm realizing it is pretty complex. It has a good green start without being minty or piney and in these days when you can't find any oakmoss, whatever it is, it's got nice depth. The finish has some really subtle patchouli and the mix of spice and woods is for me very enjoyable because it doesn't draw attention to each ingredient. They just blur together seemlessly.

I guess some feel it is too old-fashioned, but to my nose it is a classic. I don't think it has changed noticeably. Regarding a similar frag, I don't think I've run across one. I have an order in for a sample of 'Devin' though so maybe there is a connection there.

The original Armani takes me back to the 80's.....I also agree with Trussardi Uomo.

hmmm.. was just reading this thread and felt that i need to maybe speak up a bit for oaksbluff... i have a bottle bought in the early 80s (well kept in dark cupboard), and i also have a new bottle as well. the 80s juice smells stronger (really shouting directly at me but without stinging my nose or giving me a headache), definitely greener (hardly any leather at all) and has a tiny bit of a booze note. VERY intoxicating! the new one i agree smells very similar, but to me clearly more leatherish than the 80s version (btw, i am very sensitive to the leather note as it brings back unpleasant memories of being carsick as a child), and the tiny booze note is also missing. Strength-wise, the new juice is more like singing loudly behind a veil while the old one shouts clearly and directly (in a good way). i know i am risking a avalanche of differing views, but thought i just air my personal view. also, the difference is not due to diminished senses as i am doing a direct side-by-side comparison.

If you like Polo, you might also like 1903 by J. Peterman. It's a green scent (in this case more mossy/herbal than pine) backed with tobacco, leather and frankincense.

Terre D'Hermes Parfum. Masculine but not gross!

This gives me a similar smokey green vibe.

However the closest thing to Polo Green is

I'm really re-enjoying the Polo family at the moment (Original, Crest and MR anyway). My favourite is actually Modern Reserve. I try to reserve my 5* ratings for only my absolute favourites, but MR was an undoubted 5* upon first sniff!

Better choice IMO.

Polo remains one of my faves, but it's hard to find a replacement, maybe Paco Rabanne PH
post #34 of 42
Trussardi Homme is in the same fragrance family IMO!!! Polo is a fantastic fragrance.....It has stood the test of time.....Gary

I`ve change my point of view on Polo. I used to realy dislike this scent, but now I love it! It`s unique, classy and powerful. Strange how taste can change :-)
I love Polo as well but like the Modern Reserve version the best. Similar fragrances are Devin and Oud Immortelle. If I had to choose between MR and Devin, that would be hard. I think MR is a bit brighter with a little more vibrancy.
An absolute classic and masterpiece, IMO. Nothing from the Polo line and only a select few outside can touch or surpass it.

Well said and I agree a total classic.
I used to wear this shortly after graduating from uni. Would get complimented on it quite a bit at the time. Now a days I don't wear it and find it dated and a bit too powdery. But I can appreciate why it has such a following here.

I found TF Italian Cypress to be a close representative of Polo. Smoother. Like above I actually like Modern Reserve better for this day and age though.

Is Modern Reserve still in production?
