SotW September 6th-13th, 2008

Here we go with Week 28 and as always we start with the raw numbers.
1262 posts this week marking our first time over 1200 posts.
717 different scents mentioned makes this the second time weve been over 700 in this category and only one off the all-time high set two weeks ago.
479 scents mentioned only once which translates to an individuality index of 38.0%. With the higher number of overall posts the single wear number stays high but the index slides down a bit below our 40% average. One thing I noticed this week was there were a lot of members wearing the same scent for more than two days. There are a couple of consistent posters who so far wear the same scent almost every day and Id say four of the top five benefitted from consistent wears from one community member. This is another interesting aspect of doing this as it will be interesting to see if these members move to something different or if these scents are the one they will wear for a long time.
In the Big 5 Houses it was Guerlain Week as there were 94 wears over 34 scents with Vetiver at #1, Jicky at #6 and Habit Rouge at #8 leading the way. Chanel had the second most wears at 57 over 20 scents. Egoiste was the most worn Chanel and just missed the top 10 at #12. The house with the second most number of scents worn was Creed with 54 wears over 23 scents. Bois du Portugal was the house leader at #3. Serge Lutens had 38 wears over 19 scents led by Chergui at 5 wears at #20. Hermes had 33 wears over 13 scents most of which came from Terre DHermes at #2 this week.
The big 5 had a total of 276 wears (21.9%) over 109 scents (15.2%).
Outside of the Big 5 Christian Dior had its biggest week ever with 41 wears over 16 scents. Dior Homme led the way for the House of Dior this week at #4. Yves St. Laurent is starting to cool off a little as things turn a little cooler weather wise as YSL posts 30 wears over 13 scents with a third of those wears coming from the #5 scent Rive Gauche pour Homme. Montale numbers continue to stay up at 36 wears over 20 scents Red Vetyver was the leader at #20. Some other houses which had notable weeks were Sonoma Scent Studio which had its most wears ever. This stands out because there were six wears for the house this week and through Week 27 this house had a total of 13 wears with no week of more than 2. Also in the smaller houses it has been interesting observing the different trajectories of Parfums Raffy and Neil Morris. Parfums Raffy offered free samples of Dragon and Mogul a few months ago and they got sampled and worn both of them posting strong wear numbers for three or four weeks and then pretty much nothing. Neil Morris had a 15% off sale and the sampling shot this house up from an average of 2.7 wears pre-sale to an average of 8.4 post-sale. What is interesting is that number has stayed steady in the first two weeks of September with no sale incentive. In conjunction with the Montale number going up with maisonstinkys offer it seems like this kind of advertising will get a house sampled and if the community likes it it will keep it more prominent. The Different Company has been on a consistent upswing for six weeks now and Rochas is also up quite a bit over the last two weeks. There has been a lot of sampling of Possets over the last six weeks and that has continued this week. The houses that were down this week were Miller Harris, Parfums de Nicolai, Comme des Garcons and LArtisan. The last two continue mostly downward trends of the last month or so.
The remainder of the top 10 are, at #6 Caron Yatagan which returns to the top 10 for the first time since week 7. Comme des Garcons Monocle Scent One: Hinoki jumps back in after a four week absence at #8.The last two also tied at #8 are Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur and Tauer LAir du Desert Marocain.
Here is the top 10 for September 6th-13th, 2008
1.)\tGuerlain Vetiver 17 wears (1.3%)
2.)\tHermes Terre dHermes 13 wears (1.0%)
3.)\tCreed Bois du Portugal 11 wears (0.9%)
3.)\tDior Homme 11 wears (0.9%)
5.)\tYves St. Laurent Rive Gauche pour Homme 10 wears (0.8%)
6.)\tCaron Yatagan 9 wears (0.7%)
6.)\tGuerlain Jicky 9 wears (0.7%)
8.)\tComme des Garcons Monocle Scent One: Hinoki 8 wears (0.6%)
8.)\tFrederic Malle Musc Ravageur 8 wears (0.6%)
8.)\tGuerlain Habit Rouge 8 wears (0.6%)
8.)\tTauer LAir du Desert Marocain 8 wears (0.6%)

In the just missed group was the aforementioned Chanel Egoiste and Creed Green Irish Tweed. The third member of the just missed group was Knize Ten which for the first time shows the power of a five-star rating from Turin and Sanchez. Knize Ten had seven wears this week which is equivalent to the total wears from week eight to twenty-two. It was harder to see this effect before as most of the five-stars were worn by the community. This one has shown a clear correlation of more wears tied to the rating in The Guide Newsletter. One last thing is there have been a number of new scents released in the last month particularly on the department store side of things and we are seeing a lot of sampling of these scents by the community. The early winner of this latest batch is Kenzo Power which has been holding steady just outside the top 10 the last three weeks. Guerlain Homme, Dior Homme Sport, Cartier Roadster and Prada Infusion DHomme are getting tried but none of them have achieved any traction as of yet.
Thats it for Week 28.
As Always, you keep wearing em and Ill keep counting em.
Have a well-fragranced week.

I am seriously impressed, SMM!

Thank you

I was wondering ... do you count one scent per day per member OR as many as they mention? Some days there are a few who are testing several scents at a time. I wondered how you handled those days and how they skew the stats. Plus, those that list a SOTD and a SOTE.

Just curious

SMM, when it comes to most statistics, I stink. But with THESE statistics I smell...hell, we ALL smell wonderful!

Here are my two rules:
If you wear it on your skin and post it, I count it.
If you refresh it in the evening, it only counts once.

If you're testing and you post everything you test I count it.
If you start off in the morning in one scent and shift to a different one in the evening, I count both.
If you start off in one scent in the morning and refresh it before going out, I count that scent once.

A fabulous report, as ever. 717 scents in one week is an incredible number. Thank God we weren't all in the same room on a sniffa.
