Ok, so I took everyone's suggestions seriously and I think it is important to make a distinction between niche and mainstream orientals, so that is why this is a mainstream thread. Additionally, this poll is not meant to represent all the mainstream orientals out there, rather it is a fun list derived from my thread entitled "Best Men's Oriental" and the overwhelming majority of the scents with the most votes made it to this poll. Again, this poll is derived from the previous thread. Moreover, I am posting this poll for fun and it is not meant to take attention away from certain niche fragrances and/or their importance. I understand and very much respect the arguments against polls and the problems that they may present; but this is merely for fun, so lets not lets just keep it at that.

For me, I personally love oriental scents and they are what drew me here to Basenotes in the first place so I have ben thinking about this thread ever since I got here, this is an important thread for me persoanlly because as I have come to know Basenotes I have a tremendous amount of respect for all of your opinions and votes.

With that said, let the best scent win and thank you for taking a moment to vote!

BTW, when I was compiling this poll I realized that there really are not a whole lot of well known mainstream men's orientals of very high quality; sad.

If you want, if you vote "other," maybe you could post your choice here so that others can know of that fragrance as they, including myself, may want to try it, or at the very least check it out in the BN Directory.

I've voted for "Jaipour" from the list, but...

Anytime I read about mainstream orientals, these scents come to my mine:
-Burberry London
-John Varvatos (Original and preferably the vintage)
-St. Dopunt Signature

And nowadays I wear and enjoy:
-Armani Code
-Prada Amber Pour Homme
-Vera Wang for Men
-Escada Magnetism

More than that try these scents:
-Tom Ford For Men
-Escada Pour Homme
-Guerlain L'Instant
-Rochas Man

Good luck with the poll!, a bit difficult to classify some scents as Orientals or Aromatics etc, there is so much disagreement on this but for me:

Opium EDT
M7
Burberry London
-John Varvatos
Rochs man
Gucci Envy

Simply put, this is a fun poll. These are the scents that members classified as "orientals." I addressed criticisms that would detract from the poll by writing a lengthy introduction because I think they detracts from the poll. No poll is perfect. Please see above re: arguments for and against polls, but thanks for pointing that out, again.

Out of the ones polled above, M7 stands out for me.

I have yet to try this scent, but I have been hearing great things about it, I have been keeping my eyes peeled for a sale here on BN.

I am going to have to go with Opium PH EDP.
Habit Rouge should win it comfortably
I voted for Jaipur edp.

Others I enjoy:

Egoiste
M7
L'Instant pour Homme
Bulgari Black
Rochas Man
The Dreamer
Heritage
Habit Rouge
and my sotd - Gucci Envy for Men

I am a little confussed here....are you looking for a oriental which is classified as having resins, flowers with vanilla and musk. The only scent for men which is classifed to fall into that catagory is:

Habit Rouge - 1965
KL Homme - 1986
Extase Musk Man -1985
Monsieur Musk - 1973

A lot of the scents you have listed are under the sub-catagory of Woody Oriental - oriental notes blended with woods scents of patchouli and sandalwood.

And some like Aramis are a Chypre Cuir or Dry Woods - Dry resins, cedar, tabacco, musk.

???

Habit Rouge for me!
I voted for Opium EDP.

Is Patou PH considered a mainstream oriental? If it is, I'd have to vote for it, but no matter, Opium is a bomb and seems to blend pretty well with others.
I would personally disagree with Aramis being on a list of orientals. It is a very classic example of a chypre/leather scent.
I voted other for Polo Double Black. M7 is a favorite also though.
For me it's a toss up between Habit Rouge and Burberry Brit.
Tiffany for Men is my favorite scent from that list, but I don't consider it an oriental....

Yes, and Givenchy Gentleman is also a chypre, not an oriental.

And I voted for others (Heritage).

I ignored Obsession for decades, and gave it a chance about a year ago. I appreciate its cinnamon and civet effect, and longevity is also satisfying. Smelling a shirt Obsessioned and worn the day after wearing it is a pleasure. It got my vote.
From the list, I voted for "Gucci Ency"

It is a scent I can dress up or down. I find it very difficult to wear scents like Egoiste and M7 everyday, but I like them all equally. I might have voted for Heritage if it were on the list.
Jaipur Homme EdP, just edging out Habit Rouge.

Just as an aside, I'd debate classing Givenchy Gentleman, Bulgari Black, and Aramis(!!!) on the list. All are leather or chypre scents. I'd have had Heritage and perhaps A*Men in place of these as important mainstream orientals for men. (Even though I actively despise the latter.)

Is it? I have never tried it but it did receive 2 votes on the previous thread.

I have not broken the poll up to be that specific, so the choices are any kind of oriental, although that would be interesting breaking each category of orientals up for a poll, i.e., one poll for woody orientals, one poll for flowery Orientals and so on, then after all those polls are finished make a master poll that ties in the top picks from each poll and do a poll from that you so you have popular representations from each category in 1 master poll. Frankly, being somewhat new here I do not have the knowledge and familiarity with enough orientals to break up the poll to be that specific Maybe you could start a thread to help educate members on the intricies of orientals as you seem to have more knowledge in this area. Again, this poll is not perfect and it is merely meant to be fun and highlight popular orientals, and these are not scents that I picked, as they were picked by BN members in the previous thread. However, I realize that posting a poll is a hotbed for criticisms.

I agree that Aramis is a chypre--it is very similar to Estee Lauder Azuree (same nose), and lacks the prominent vanilla / amber / musk that is typical of orientals. There is a chart somewhere--a fragrance map. A link was made in a few recent threads here over the last few months. It is rather helpful, although not comprehensive.

Habit Rouge, of course.

...but it can make a place for sharing our common interest: PERFUMES!

Meanwhile I wanted to add that "Prada"(your wardrobe icon) is categorized in the following ways:
-By oSmoz: Oriental-Fougere
-By Sephora: Woody-Oriental
-By M.Edwards: Dry Woods-Fresh

And Aramis(the original one) is categorized in this way:
-By oSmoz: Woody-Chypre
-By Sephora it should be a Mossy-Woody
-By M.Edwards: Dry Woods-Fresh (not sure)

So there isn't any unique universal categorization but I would recommend you browsing the oSmoz website, which is one the best perfume encyclopedias on net with the best categorization system IMO.

Other: Armani Code. I like it more than any of those from the list which I know - all except for the Creed and Tiffany.
givenchy pi hands down
Versace's The Dreamer for me. It's at the top of my designer list (oriental and all categories).
