Alternative Energy Sources

Ever since moving to a place that's known for plenty of WIND, my husband and I have contemplated building a windmill. I've looked at different types (there are a *LOT*), and their costs. But, haven't made the jump yet.

Has anyone converted part of their home/workplace energy to their own powersupply?

What did you choose, and how did you make the decision?

I'm always researching new "personal" power-generating products as they pop up in the news and this one has remained as a stand-out in my mind regarding wind-power - http://www.helixwind.com/en/index.php

No personal experience as you're asking for but just thought I'd throw that out.

I have 6 of the 120 watt Kyocera solar electric panels + custom roof racks, 8 LG deep-storage batteries to store the DC power from the solar panels for night use, a 20 circuit transfer switch, a Trace inverter to convert the DC from the solar panels/storage batteries into AC for direct use and various and sundry other related items for a complete system. I just need the time and the get up and go to put it all together and put it to use.

In the USA we have the technology, the products and the resources to make and use far more nuclear, wind, solar, geothermal, water, biological etc. alternative energy sources then we are doing. What we have been lacking is the will to make sure our elected officials see that this is done. And to use all means possible to do so most quickly and effectively. More studies that simply stall this movement off oil and coal are not in our best national interest in the long run. We know what works and what doesn't. When it becomes profitable for alternative energy companies to produce, they will produce. What is in our best interest is to put the brakes on conventional oil/coal energy and REQUIRE our representatives in local, state and national positions to promote and utilize these alternative energy sources or face not being reelected.

Heh! Tell me about it!

Thanks, MadScientist! Yes, I have seen the helical windmills, too. I thought they were a really nice (and almost art-y) option. They supposedly kill less birds too. . . .
