As i'm sure you probably have noticed on most news sites, the fires are back yet again in Southern California. I believe that there's one fire in an area around Santa Barbara and one in Sylmar, which is very, very close to the Granada Hills/Porter Ranch area where the large fire was last time. I live in Northridge, which is close to Granada Hills and Porter Ranch, so i'm not really in any danger, but I usually experience the conditions anyway. By the way, this area is in the San Fernando Valley, which is approx. 45 minutes north of downtown Los Angeles.
I actually knew we had a fire nearby before I even heard it on the news, as I like to sleep with my window open and I could smell smoke and had to close it in the very early morning hours. Recently its been a little bit hotter and we've been having strong winds, so those are pretty good catalysts for fires. Just like giving some perspective to the other basenoters who aren't from around here. Usually when this happens, when you go outside, you can immediately smell the smoke and ash, and it almost kind of smells like a bbq. Also, even if it's a sunny day, it will look overcast, or even foggy, because of the smoke blocking out the sun. I just hope that breathing in the smoke from a nearby fire isn't hazardous to ones health, as these are getting a bit too common.
