Thoughts and Prayers

Hey All. I usually don't do this but I wanted to throw this out there.
Well let me give you guys some background. In July of 2000 I got a flu bug. At the time I was in incredible shape, worked out alot, etc. It attacked my heart. I had Viral Myocarditis. By the time I made it to the emergency room...I was walking in a dream state at work...My heart became enlarged by 50%. My ejection fraction(squeezing motion of the heart) was at 20%(normal is 60-70). My heart was out of rhythm and I was dying. I spent a night in ICU and then 4 nights in my own room. After shocking my heart back to rhythm and months of rehab...low sodium, beta blockers, other heart meds, blood thinners, diuretics....etc..I got lucky, 20 lbs less and my heart back to normal and recovered. I was lucky. The only side effect was my heart may go out of rhythm again.

Here we are 8 years later and my heart and health is incredible but my heart can still go out of rhythm and had 4 times this year compared to once every few years. So my cardiologist recommended I get a procedure called ablation. I knew about it and had asked other docs but it didn't make sense to get it done. Now it is more common and perfected. The surgeon said it is all about just being completely normal again where little things like diving into cold water won't maybe knock it out of rhythm. They go in through the groin and then burn off the area that causes the problem. So its not an open heart thing and I'll only be in the hospital one night. Hopefully this will complete the recovery and all since I'm considered in great health.

Anyways, throw up a prayer or a toast or whatever that it all goes perfectly and that it is a good week for me and my family. I have preop stuff Wednesday and the surgery is Thursday morning.

Thanks
TC

Thanks for sharing that with us. We all send you our good thoughts. The fact that you are in good shape prior to your op will help you on the recovery.
Onward!!

Toughcool, thank you for sharing your story. Ironically, my husband went through a similar thing. In Aug. of 1999 (at age 41) he ended up with a virus that attacked his heart, myocarditis ensued, and he too almost died. Long story short: he now has a pacemaker, and was one of the lucky few (along with yourself) who made a great recovery! In fact, in the summer of 2001 he did a century bike tour!

My family has had a multitude of serious health issues, and if there's one thing I've learned - you must be your own advocate! Make sure whomever is going to do this procedure has done it MANY times before (successfully) and are well respected by their peers, and even moreso - the nurses! Don't be timid about asking questions. Time allowing, you pretty much can "interview" specialists until you find the right one. I wish you the best. Keep us posted, and if I can help you in any way, don't hesitate to PM. Positive thoughts and energy flowing your way...

I unfortunately had some health problems a few years ago. I know how stressful the process can be. Nothing to do but get it over with and get on with the good things in life. Will keep good thoughts for you. Best luck.

Good to hear about your husband. I didn't need a pacemaker but know others that did. So it is good that he is doing so much and recovered. The only thing that isn't normal compared to before is the A-fib. So I hope this gets it. As far as doctors, luckily I'm in houston, where some of the best heart specialists in the world are and my regular cardiologist and my surgeon are tops. In fact I the doctor doing the procedue is one ofd the top specialists at it and has done many surgeries including teaching at the Baylor College of Medicine. He is great and says his goal is just for me to not have to worry about this again and to be able to do whatever. Lately, cold water in lakes or oceans knocks it out of rhythm. I've avoided caffeine and decongestants for 8 years...except for what is in my decaf.

TC, I had a dear friend (my best man at my wedding) who passed away several years ago with heart-related complications, just one week shy of his 30th birthday. Im not mentioning this to alarm you, rather, I wanted to state that ever since then, I have been pro-active in helping educate people on heart health.

I also suffer from a condition called costochondritis which is an inflammation of the soft tissue between the ribs and sternum, that can put pressure on the heart which can result in crippling chest pains and frightening arrhythmia, so much so that it has put me in hospital on one occasion. One can never under appreciate a good healthy heart. Your procedure is a fairly common one with little risk, so I will absolutely keep you and yours firmly in mind this week, sending you as much healing thoughts and positive energy that I can muster.

I am sure you will be fine!

I had a similar surgery in 1997 (when this method was fairly new) due to a congenital heart disorder - an extra "electric cord" which sometimes caused my heart to beat fast as... very fast. Anyway, the doctor thought my attacks could be dangerous and we decided to burn the illness away. I stayed at the hospital one night, and although the day after was pretty bad (hangover plus groin PAIN) the whole thing worked out perfectly smooth.

After three weeks of recovery (mostly because of a sore groin), I was back in the saddle - working as a bicycle messenger. I have had no further problems, and I continued to take part in both in cross country skiing and long distance mountain bike competitions.

Best wishes TC, and remember to bring SOTD for the day after!

I have been through cardiac procedures with my husband, who also has A-fib. I am sure that you will find the catheterization uneventful and I certainly hope that it is the end of the A-fib for you. Good luck!

Good luck with this. Medicine is amazing today. I'm sure you'll be fine. With any luck, you'll never have to worry about this again.

I REALLY appreciate the thoughts and stories..more than you know. The more I talk to people the more I run into others who have had the procedure or who have had similar problems while young. I felt it was a miracle I recovered completely before and hopefully this completes it all. I really appreciate it and will log in and let you guy sknow how it went after I get out.

Pelle, looks like it worked for you. Dimitri, I hope your condition stays normal and causes no complications. It is good to be proactive. Back in 2000 I had my fair share of beer and wine but I was the one who worked out religiously and was in shape...probably saved me.. and had this happen. I have friends that smoke and drink and whatever and they are never sick. So you never know when random events will happen. My word to the wise now is if you don't feel good, don't ignore it. Better to take a look and be sure than do what I did and almost wait too long.

Chris, best of luck, we will, without a doubt, keep you in our thoughts and prayers over here.

BTW, my girlfriend is an RN (nurse) who works in an ICU and her patients are heart patients just coming out of surgery. She deals strictly with heart patients, so if you have any questions or concerns, etc... contact me privately and I can put you in contact with her (she is extremely patient too mostly because I am a pain in the ass. LOL) or have her answer your questions/concerns through me. Take care.

Sending good thoughts and prayers from Kansas ... to both TC and javagreen.

I work in a heart cath lab and have helped out in the EP lab for these type of ablations plenty of times. It sounds like you have a great team and a great doctor ... Best of luck!

May TC and javagreen get well soon.

You're both in my prayers, and your families as well.

You will be operated on by a surgeon who likely has completed thousands of succesful operations. Keep your mind at peace and recover quickly. You won't miss too much here...we'll just be bickering about some meaningless stuff anyway.

Plenty of positive prayers for both of you guys. TC - I'll be wearing the Polo Modern Reserve you sent me on Thursday for good luck!

The man whose signature always remind me how little I know about fragrances, and entries in the "Album, EP or Song of the Day" threads remind me how little I know about music.
Get well man.

All my thoughts are for you today TC, even if I know you're still sleeping.
Hugs.

Best wishes for an uneventful surgery and speedy recovery TC. And thank you for sharing your story with us. It's amazing to me how a simple common interest in fragrance has attracted such an amazing group of people. We'll all be thinking of you (and I'll put on a bit of Antidote in hopes that this surgery will be the antidote to your lingering issue. )

Things went unexpectedly wrong. They punctured my heart and screwed up. They had to open my chest, fix it and sew em up...and finish the first surgery. A hell of a scar and sore but still recovering at the hospital.

I'm sorry to hear this but also quite glad to see you here.

I was so sorry about my pregnant wife and all and she was not doing well. They either didnt sedate me right or the robot arm effed up. Either way I woke up after that surgery to be told I was being cut open and all. One of the top surgeons out there cut me open, stitched the tiny hole and finished the ablation without a bypass. They had to restrain me later because I wasn't sure what happened and they had a tube in my throat. 4 people to hold me down. I probably smelled Kouros. I'm trying to stay positive,

I'm sorry to hear you're having such a rough time. How long will this extend your recovery time?

Once you see your little baby, you're heart will be in for another kind of thunderbolt. Of course, this time it will be a good one. Good luck.
