I only recently purchased my very first backup bottle .
Now !! only mention your very first .
> not because your current bottle was about to run out or it was being or is discontinued
but because you were moved so much by this frag .
cheers

YSL, Opium EDT (Well I already have the EDP so this was sort of a backup bottle).

Havana Reserva

Dior Homme Intense

As soon as I sprayed Tiffany for Men, I was hooked. That was my first back up purchase.

Pre-Basenotes: Giorgio for Men

First backup after finding Basenotes: Green Irish Tweed
post #7 of 42
I've got two: L'Artisan Vetiver and vintage Givenchy Gentleman.

I was going to answer based on the thread title until I read:

Now I'm puzzled. Does it count if I bought more of something I already own because it was temporarily available for an extraordinarily low price? Or do I have to have bought it for no good reason?

I only find it necessary to own backup bottles of discontinued fragrances.

I have backups of:
Abercrombie Woods, Monsieur Rochas, and Feuille Verte (and no I can/will not spare a drop! )

I don't yet own Domenico Caraceni 1913 (I have one "lined up"), but as soon as I buy the other few fragrances I'm after, I'll surely pick up a backup bottle of that too. Geez, I hope they reissue this

I had 2 backups of Diesel ++ (plus plus), and got into one and gave the other to my friend (who subsequently choked me out with it and sort of ruined it a bit). I might go for Montale Wood and Spice instead of this, but I'm not really in a hurry at the moment. Sorry, that got off track.

OH and double sorry - I totally didn't read the instructions! OK - so my very first backup was Abercrombie Woods

I buy extras of Helmut Lang Cuiron (my first) and Helmut Lang EdC and EdP whenever I see them for a good price, precisely because they are discontinued and the prices are going up. Otherwise, the only backup I have of a non-discontinued, but limited edition, fragrance is Dior Homme Intense.

Yes, it's vintage GG for me, too. Back when it was my favorite, signature scent, my bottle ran out, and two people bought me replacements - my mom and my girlfriend. I refused to return either bottle.

I don't have a true backup that I bought myself, but I may get Tom Ford Extreme again since it's a limited edition, or I may get the limited edition bottle of TdH just to own it.

yes it counts
Would you buy it for no good reason ? I wouldn't .
None for me yet! I'd rather throw something new in the mix than spend the money on something I already own. I'm always changing.
same as bbBD for me....

Helmut Lang Cuiron was the first scent i ever backed up.....ended up ordering 7 backup bottles in 1 week....when beauty encounter started stocking them for $40 or whatever....bought a few more as i've found em.

i dunno why people backup fragrances that are still in production....that just seems like a waste of resources IMO....unless you find em real cheap or something.

OK, then I think my first backup bottle was Opium P.H. (EdT). Later I also bought multiple bottles of the EdP for the same reason. I'm pretty sure everything else I've ever had a second bottle of was either discontinued or about to run out.

For the record, "because you were moved so much" is not what I would call a good reason to buy more bottles of something I already have!

d4 ... you are strange
if " because you like the frag so much "... ain't the best or most common reason ,
What is ?
Please explain why you purchased your first Opium & then the 2nd one ?
you didn't say .
Vintage Givenchy Gentleman was my first backup also, I see a pattern.
Rive Gauche.

I got three bottles of Eau Sauvage Fraicheur Cuir because I knew I wouldn't have the chance to get it very often.

I have several bottles of Gucci Envy because it's popular and the bottle looks neat.

Burberry London because it's a real favorite of mine.

I have two bottles of Diamonds for Men... no reason, well, I wanted some aftershave and it was cheaper to get a gift set and I already had a bottle so...

I've gone through a bottle of Homme de Gres and have another waiting to be used.

I like Cool Water but the Frozen variation I liked and I ended up getting two bottles via a trade.

I guess those few count as "back ups" but the true backup is Eau Sauvage Fraicheur Cuir.

I have never, ever backed a bottle. But, I may have to do this with Jicky.
Opium EDP was the first. Lp9 Was second. There have been others over the years.

It is true I am strange, and to answer your question, besides a fragrance running out or being discontinued, the only other reason I can think of to buy multiple bottles is to take advantage of a limited opportunity to get them unusually cheap. This was the exact scenario I laid out in the first post above, remember? The one to which you replied yes it counts . And then

Right. Oh, does getting a gift of something you already have count? This has never happened to me, but I think I read a post about it happening to someone else.

Edit: Never mind. By the way I think "strange" is the wrong way to put it; really I'm sort of an asshole.

mine was Issey Miyake

I agree, why would you need to backup bottles in production?
My first was helmut lang edc.

Bois du Portugal. I had bought a 30% full bottle on ebay, and when the opportunity arose, I got a full one immediately. The second one was Dominguez Vetiver, becasue of the irresistably low price. I just got Royal English Leather, but my orifinal bottle has only about 15% left, so that doesn't really count. I usually don't conside backups, as I will probably never finish many bottles anyway.
My first and so far only backup bottle(s) is Nemo.
I could have bought 10 Creeds for what I'm waisting on backup bottles of By Man
post #29 of 42
Caron Pour Un Homme if I remember correctly.
Gucci Envy For Men --- Long's drugstore had several 50ml bottles for just over $20 each, so I bought three and put them in the refrigerator.

Other than Patou PH, only Santal Noble I have liked enough to be looking for a 2nd bottle. I have the reformulation and am looking for the original now.

Because you never know when your favorite fragrance might be reformulated...

Mitsouko EDP.

Before my crazy LPNo:9 mass purchase, my first ever backup bottle was:

JIL SANDER SUN MEN
I don't have the money for backups and at the same time I agree with everso and would never buy a backup of something that is still in production. The ONLY thing that has even gotten me close is L'air du Desert.
Lagerfeld Photo....i just love this scent...none of my other acquitions aftr joining BN her really finished...but im sure, i wont waste a second to replace Ambre Sultan, Santal Noble and few others...

Let me play the lion, Lez Nez
I like using different things all the time so buying back up bottles is a waste of money for me. But, I did buy back ups of these:

Patou pour Homme - I bought another one because it was there and I found it.

These because I thought they were being discontinued - but I needed them anyway.

MOSCHINO POUR HOMME

two large bottles found in 21 days , discontinued & very very special .
pre-basenotes: Ralph Lauren Monogram
currently, because of good prices (although I do fear it to be discontinued): YSL Kouros Fraicheur

tempted to get in on the Caraceni backups while they exist... but is that only prolonging the sorrow?
