Ambre Sultan
by Serge Lutens

Top notes: Oregano, Bay leaf, Coriander, Myrtle,
Middle notes: Angelica, Patchouli
Base notes: Labdanum, Styrax, Tolu balsam, Benzoin, Sandalwood

Perfect for a wintry day in the stands watching football!
Although I live in a small town, the local college has won the national Division III
(small college) football championship nine times in recent years. The playoffs
start today and Mount Union College is again ranked number one in the country.

Edit: Mount Union won 56 - 0.

Serge Lutens
Serge Noire
(2008)
Christopher Sheldrake, Serge Lutens

Notes: Patchouli, Camphoraceous Notes, Cinnamon, Spices, Amber, Incense Notes, Woody Notes, Labdanum, Castoreum
Serge Noire opens with a blast of something camphoraceous, and (maybe it's just me) a bit of body sweat. Then it's cinnamon for a bit, followed by incense and dark, slightly smoky woods. Later, there are hints of labdanum and castoreum. (Yes, maybe that's the slightly sweaty note that gave a nod at the beginning, or was it an unspecified spice note, something like fenugreek? remember the opening of Santal Blanc?). This scent seems to be made entirely of base notes; nothing of citrus, florals, herbals, or any of the others that typically inhabit the upper levels. In spite of that, this is a winner: dramatic, surprising, yet a bit melancholy in its preponderance of darker tones. I would say it's one of the better recent Serge Lutens offerings.

Note Pyramid
Hawthorn, Honeysuckle.
Sandalwood.
Lenstiscus, Styrax (Benzoin)

The opening is unique; a tar - garage accord. It develops one of the most sensual accords I've experienced; a dry, warm sandalwood together with a soft floral note. Exquisite...

Have a great weekend basenoters!

Van Gils original.

I bought this last winter and remember liking it. With fall approaching I tried it again a few times, but found it a bit too heavy, until today. Last night there where hailstorms and the weather right now feels wintery cold and I really started liking Van Gils original again. The sweetness and smokyness of this scent really need a wintercold to shine.

...a Revlon great (for me) Opens slightly citrusy with a vanilla hint, and settles into a beautiful muted tuberose dominated flower heart with undercurrents of spicy musk. No ice in here but wonderfully comforting.

SotE: Guerlain's Derby from an EdT-oldie. This old juice smells almost like gasoline, then softens down to something ... leathery? Soft leather. Herbal leather. A strange marriage. It's both herbal, smoky, leathery and spicy, a sort of minty-cool offspring of the ten years older Parure's pungent mixture of rose, oak moss and leather.

Went to Scentmother's for dinner last night and she spoiled me with decants of which I am wearing two today:

Donna Karan Essence: Labdanum (Left Wrist)
Donna Jaran Essence: Wenge (right wrist)
Both together in the crook of both arms.

Each of them stand alone by themselves just fine but together they just go beyond 1+1.
Labdanum comes off as a floral incense on me and that is unique. The incense is balanced just right so as not to overpower the floral note at the top.
Wenge is a smoky, woody, resinous scent but more subtle than that sounds. This is a lighter feel than yesterday's CdG H&M cedar top note.
Labdanum + Wenge this is where the true beauty lies. Together these two compliment and enhance each other. After layering the two there is a stronger amber note that comes alive in the combination. Upon re-examining my wrists I realize it is there in the Labdanum but lightly. The Wenge when added in somehow sharpens the olfactory focus enough for the amber to move more front and center and combine with the obvious notes from each of the components to create a new and different creature.
A completely beautiful combination. It is going to be hard for me to wear either of these singly because I now know how well they go together.
Have a Serene Saturday everyone.

Moltening, Hyde65, nsamadi and Fraddicted, you all smell particularly delicious to me today. Please let me nuzzle your necks...What a nice, laid-back day!

Still glowing in the warmth of ScentSon SMM and family's dinner visit last night (dear husband decided after the fact that MUSTARD was what was missing from the "white lasagna" he fed everyone -- I assured him the rest of the feast more than made up for the low-complexity of the lasagna) Afraid the poodles have become my adoptive grandchildren, and I am way too young for grandkids, so perhaps they'll become nephews? Anyhow, I love them to bits, as do my kids, albeit with considerably more enthusiasm than the dear doggies are used to.

Continuing my incense kick with a combo of Cdg Ouarzazate & Cdg's H & M fragrance, which I got a taste of thanks to dear ScentSon... VERY distressed that there seem to be no more full bottles available anywhere state-side. I WANT ONE!!!!

Ouazazate has much more spearmint than I expected. It's nice, but missing the white-smoky, woody aspect I was hoping for.

CdG H&M is straightforward and gorgeous. I want a bottle. Now. Please. Anyone?
