Poppa Chubby whose voice is as sexy as Joe Cocker's and whose music is cooler. http://www.popachubby.com/
Bettye Lavette who is making a late life comeback with a beautifully broken voice. I love how when her voice cracks it sounds like fingers sliding on guitar strings. http://www.rosebudus.com/lavette/WomanLikeMe.html

I'm rediscovering Kim Wilson and The Fabulous Thunderbirds too. Again, I'm a sucker for his voice.

Too much to list entirely! I've been listening to a lot less music the past few months though - I've been composing a lot, and when I write I find it best to not listen to others music for little while.

Classical composers:

Messiaen ( did a presentation on him, so I wound up listening to a LOT of his music )
Stravinsky
Boulez
Magnus Lindberg ( only the clarinet concerto, but I love it! )
Ligeti ( see username )
Florent Schmitt

Pop/Rock:

The Kills ( their first album got me through my first break-up )
The Hives ( of Veni Vidi Vicious and Tyrannosaurus Hives )
The Archie Bronson Outfit ( Derdang Derdang = deliciously blues tinged hard rock! )
Wolf Parade ( Apologies To The Queen Mary )
Animal Collective ( assorted songs )
Arcade Fire ( both albums... put out a third guys and gals! )
The White Stripes ( specifically the first album and a few singles... the later ones really don't do as much for me )
Bongwater ( only a few songs... this band is like an experiment that fails three times out of four, but is quirkily brilliant when it hits )
The Fall ( always cheers me up )
Kasabian ( my guilty pleasure )
God Speed You! Black Emperor ( another "only a few songs" entry )
...and last but certainly not least, Clinic, my all-time favorite band! New album this year, too! I look forward to the sixth in 2010.

For the whole of 2008, hmmm, my collection runs the spectrum, newer stand outs for me...

albums:

Linkin Park - minutes to midnight
3 Doors Down - 3 doors down
Theory of a Deadman - Scars & Souvenirs
Gavin Rossdale - Wanderlust

songs (i've been in a sappy mood):
I'm yours - Jason Mraz
Gotta Be Somebody - Nickelback (yes, I know it's nickelback, please don't stone me)
So What - Pink
The Pretender - Foo Fighters
Falling On - Finger 11
We Don't Have to Look Back Now - Puddle of Mudd
Let It Rock - Kevin Rudolf featuring Lil wayne
You're Gonna Go Far, Kid - The Offspring

Been a retro year.

New stuff:
M83, Saturday = Youth
Santogold
Hot Chip, Made in the Dark

I didn't have much time for music, but my MP3 player mostly ran The Smiths, Joy Division, Cure, Peter Hammill, Jethro Tull, Hedningarna, Die Goldenen Zitronen, Beatles, mike ladd...

Worry not, there's two of us here. Listened to that one quite a few times myself when I knew they had a new album out. I know it's uncool to listen to Nickelback but the truth is when the Nickelback mood kicks in, no other music is satisfactory.
And this is one of their best songs.

wow, some unexpected references to Trentmoller and Otto von Schirach!

Dreamsploitation: "The Soft Focus Of Sound Today" LP

it's a brilliant brilliant album....go and order it! elements of IDM, guitars, folk, dub, and lots of brilliant sampling. My album of the year for 2008....and that's no small prize considering how much music i listened to this year. Too much.

Otto is local to me. I Just caught him live over the weekend. He's nuts.
(also saw Ed rush + optical, Kill the Noise, Treasure Fingers + Q-Bert at the same party).

For those who are curious.

Scentronic, if you like Otto I have an old MP3 recorded at The Barn in WI that you might like. PM if you want a copy.

Album of the Year: Grouper - Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill

EP of the Year: Riley Reinhold - Balsamic Times

The Boy Love Girl EP by Ricardo Tobar came in a very close second.

Single of the Year: Beroshima - Horizon (Funk D'Void Hope Remix)

Live Performance of The Year: John Digweed

I still remember those dark beats oozing out the speakers. Highlight night of the year for me.

Honorable mentions of the year go to Jesse Somfay, Guy J, Robert Babicz, & Radio Slave for constantly coming out with great music through out the year.
