Eau des Îles
(1988)
Jean Laporte

Top Notes: Myrrh, Tarragon
Middle Notes: Coffee, Incense, Ylang-Ylang, Labdanum
Base Notes: Patchouli, Vetiver, Galbanum
A leather-chypre slant with a strange, evocative set of notes. Labdanum serves for the leather note in this, with curious companions in the heart note of coffee, frankincense and the surprising floral ylang-ylang. Myrrh in the top (it's usually a base note) with a green, but slightly anise-like tarragon for support. Galbanum in the base (usually a top note) echoes the tarragon, and patchouli and vetiver are just typical of Jean Laporte. The effect is marvelous, even enrapturing (to me, at least); it is rich, with a green undernote that both delights and astonishes, so deftly tucked into a dry woody-oriental-leather scent. Laporte at his best, it is on a par with Santal Noble and Parfum d'Habit for masculine elegance.

Return to Candy Town Pt. 5 (A Basenotes SotD Tale in 7 Parts)

My partner sakecat22 had asked for the rest of the story after GM had found Mary Jane and I cheating on him. It’s never as easy as all of that. You can always relate the facts of the story with out the emotion behind it. It’s sort of like having a chocolate éclair without the filling. The facts of this story are this.
After the gumballs knocked me out, they took me to a rehab clinic where I dried out. The doctors took pity on me as they knew the vipers that cause ecstasy are the hardest to break yourself of. It was a long haul and I knew I couldn’t afford the bill that was being racked up. I kept asking the doctor who was paying and he told me, “Just get better first and all will be revealed to you.”
By and by I kicked the addiction and the doctors talked me through the worst of it, until the day they were ready to set me free. They’d even let me start wearing my Possets again and I was basking in Super Ego.
The doctor called me into his office and said, “Now that you are leaving us you’re owed some explanations.”
“Thanks doc, I have lots of questions”, I said.
“First who brought me here? Second who paid for all of it? And Third, do I have a job to go back to?”
The doc looked at me and said the answer was coming through the door as he buzzed somebody in.
I turned and saw GM come into the room.
Surprise would be an understatement. Incredulity would be closer to the truth.
I spluttered and in a tear-filled voice said, “You should hate me.”
GM said, “I should and in some ways I do. Depending on how you react to what I say I still might.”
I still couldn’t comprehend. I asked, “Why?”
GM said, “In many ways you and Mary Jane had as much to do with my failure as a friend and fiancée as your own weaknesses. I realized that if I wasn’t so busy trying to build my version of Candy Town I would’ve seen what was going on earlier. Maybe early enough to have made a difference.”
“When I saw Mary Jane with that blissed out smile in that pathetic cheap sugar room I realized I could lose two of the things I cared about most or I could do something about it.”
“I decided to do something about it and so I had you brought here to the second-best rehab clinic for Gingerbread Crack. I sent Mary Jane to the best one.”
At the mention of her name he saw my reaction.
“Now here’s the cost to you for your part in all of this. I’ve arranged for you to be re-instated to the Police Department. All of the treatment won’t cost you a dime. But only if you have no contact with Mary Jane, ever.”
“If I find out that you’ve even gone so far as to do an internet search on her name you’ll lose your job and I’ll take everything you own to pay for this treatment.”
“Do you understand?”
What could I say? “Yes, I understand.”

I looked at sakecat22 and said, “Ever since GM and I have been friends, not best friends but friends again. I’ve kept my promise and I haven’t looked for Mary Jane.”
Sakecat22 said to me, “Thanks for telling me all that. I think I under…What the heck?”
Just then there were four rapid pops and the car was surrounded by gumballs. They’d deployed Bubble Gum Boots on all four tires, so we couldn’t drive away.
The Head Gumball knocked on the window and when I rolled it down said, “The Boss told me to come and get you. It’s up to you whether it’s easy or hard.”
I could see sakecat22 wanted to try it the hard way but my experience told me that while almost everything in Candy Town is hard it would be smarter to take the easy way, this time.
I motioned to sakecat22 to get out of the car. The gumballs frisked us and disarmed us efficiently.
Then they marched us up the steps of The Gingerbread Whorehouse.

To Be Continued…….

Part 6 will be on Thursday Dec. 18th
Part 7 will be on Saturday Dec. 20th

I am pretty sure that is the only stuff my dad has ever worn, and from the same bottle over my lifetime of 30 years!

For me it is 2 sprays of Opium PH EDT today.
