2008: A year in retrospect. Love and love lost.

So, it's almost the end of the year and I think it's time to reflect a bit. So, what scents in your wardrobe do you love much more than you did at the beginning of the year, and which scents do you love much less - perhaps even falling out of love completely - and why?

Also, what new loves have you acquired this last year?

For me:

New Loves:
TDC Un Parfum des Sens et Bois - never would have guessed that this frag would be the best match to my search for a scent that smells "ethereal and sheer like a veil." Amazing and transcendent.
Versace PH - my go to frag. Clean and fresh and evocative of the mediterranean with a great woody drydown, and with more depth than most fresh frags. Always invigorates me and leaves me happy.
Caron Yatagan - A masterpiece. If you've smelled it, you know that's true. If you haven't.. you need to!
MPG Grain de Plaisir - fields of dry grain in the summer. And lemons. A great summer scent.

Fallen deeper in love with:
Prada Amber - My ultimate comfort scent. Seemingly simple soapy scent (ah, alliteration! ) but with hidden depth. I also happened to be wearing this as my SoTD when me and my g/f got back together after taking a month apart, and so it holds sentimental value, too.
Caron L'Anarchiste - I'm still discovering new facets of this fragrance. This autumn was the first autumn of mine since I've had the scent and it is simply the best, and damn near the only frag I'll wear while the leaves are changing colors.
Ungaro II - I used to write this off as stuffy. I was going to swap it for something like Le Roy Soleil (a good frag, but.. c'mon!). I didn't wear it for a good 3 or 4 months and then randomly sampled it one day and the magic hit me. Possibly the most interestingly blended complex scent I've ever come across. A true masterpiece.

Not so sure about anymore:
V&R Antidote - There's something in the base that I find a bit grating, and the jasmine in the heart can be a bit much too. It smells far more synthetic to me than it used to. I just wish I could enjoy it like I once did!
Ungaro III - This too smells far more synthetic to my nose than it used to, and I now detect a strange petrol-like note on some wearings. This has led to me wearing this far less this year.
Santana - nothing wrong with the scent, but it's so closely linked to an old relationship that I find I can't wear it without those memories surfacing. They're not bad memories, but still, I don't feel entirely comfortable invoking the past like that.

Fallen completely out of love with:
Passion for Men by Elizabeth Taylor - I think my bottle went off, it smells funky now. But even when it smelled good to me, it always reminded me of visiting my father's as a child. I think this is the scent he wore, and his whole apartment would reek of the stuff as he oversprayed while preparing to go out on a date, which he always seemed to do on the weekends he had me. What a way to spend every other weekend.. some real quality father son time.

I only began my exploration last year, but...

New Loves

Dyptique L'Eau Trois
Eau D'Italie Paestum Rose
Ava Luxe Kretek and Midnight Violet
Parfumerie Generale Bois Blond and Iris Taizo
Comme Des Garcons Original
Parfum D'Empire Ambre Russe and Fougere Bengale
Ayala Moriel Razala and Immortelle L'Amour

The notes tobacco, cardamom, clove and immortelle...

Deeper in love with...

Patou pour Homme
Frederic Malle Carnal Flower and En Passant - the latter is so delicately beautiful it almost hurts! ( In a good way. )

Not so sure about..

Cuir D'Iris - I wish I could say it was coincidental, but every time I've worn this in the past month I've gotten a headache.

Leather fragrances as a category - they're just so hit and miss with me, and after a year of searching I haven't found anything near a leather "holy grail"...

No longer love...

Tauer L'Air Du Desert Marocain
Knize Ten

A notable event this year is my no longer hating vanilla. It's still not my favorite note, I just don't hate it the way I used to ( I'd like to thank Shalimar in particular for helping me overcome this ).

It is almost exactly one year since I discovered Basenotes, and it was this year I found out there is a fragrance world outside the department stores... So I have found a lot of new loves (thank you basenoters)!

Some of my new darlings that I bought during the year are:
Guerlain Derby
Czech & Speake Dark Rose
Annick Goutal Encens Flamboyant
CdG Monocle Scent One: Hinoki
Caron Poivre
Thierry Mugler A*Men Pure Coffee
Chanel Coromandel

The only "old" bottle that I still really like is Viktor & Rolf Antidote.

Because of my growing experience of fragrances (and hopefully a refined nose) none of my pre Basenotes bottles has grown on me, but there are a couple that I have sampled during the year that didn´t work initially but more or less suddenly "clicked" with me and I will end up buying:
SMN Nostalgia
L´Artisan Parfumeur Voleur de Roses
Chanel Cuir de Russie

Not so sure about anymore:
Vera Wang for men
Chanel Allure
Zino Davidoff

Fallen completely out of love with:
Lanvin Arpège pour Homme
Armani City Glam for Him
Armani White He
Guerlain L'Instant d'un Eté pour Homme

Chanel Platinum Égoïste
Different Company Rose Poivrée
(the only new purchase, loved the sample but I can´t stand the bottle...)
Versace Man

My nose and only my nose. Though I liked both at first, after several wearings of both I decided that though I appreciated them, I had ceased to like them, and wearing them had ceased being enjoyable. Knize Ten was just too sweet and too heavy after a while; L'Air was nicely crafted, but just didn't work for me.

I owned a bottle of the former and nearly bought a bottle of the latter. I think I realized it was time to trade in my Knize when I was trying to find other uses for it, like scenting postcards.

They're both massively popular around here, but then so is Domenico Caraceni, and I've never been big on that.

Sculpture, if you enjoy Versace PH, try Chanel Allure Homme Sport. Smells nearly identical to VPH, but has superior longevity, a nice sparkle in the top notes from the aldehydes, and a pepper note that balances it more completely IMO. I wore one on each wrist and the Chanel was a clear winner, to my nose at least.

Don't be afraid because it's called Sport, if it was Fraiche I think people would feel differently about it :-p

Thanks Sokkou. I've heard the comparison made before and it seems pretty split on the preference. I'm going to try and sample Allure Homme sport when I can, perhaps when I go to my mother's for Christmas as there is a Macy's nearby.

Mario WOW! I remember a few years ago, when I always read the reviews on perfumeemporium.com I noticed you were, one of the "go to" guys on that site, and Minotaure was on of you favorite fragrances. I'm really surprised how you've had a falling out, but the old leaves and the new come in.

Last year's big accords were about vetiver and leather, and I still enjoy a lot of what I wore frequently last year but this year I've been loving and learning a lot about rose and tobacco. Domenico Caraceni, C&S No.88, and Nicolai Pour Homme have given me tremendous pleasure. The bottle of L'Artisan Vetiver that I broke boundaries of all sorts to get last year has mostly just sat there. I would say that generally my respect for traditional men's perfumery has increased this year, particularly for stuff in the EdC tradition of citrus flanked by animalic or leathery notes: Jules, Monsieur Givenchy, etc.
Now that I can smell more clearly what's going on in an accord, I'd like to go back through the important traditional feminines and see what I might like to wear.

A surprise new love at the end of the year - Czech & Speake #88. I've sampled this a few times before and felt so-so... but I tried it again yesterday and it's a new love. Go figure.
