Egoiste first impression

Just got my new bottle of Chanel Egoiste (traded for it blind). My first impression upon spraying was "OPIUM." My first thought was that this smells similar to Opium PH (edt) although they share only the vanilla note in the base. I did not spray it on my skin yet because I am wearing FDM today, I sprayed it on a card. Am I crazy to make this association?

No u are not crazy. I get also similarities among the two, that crispy vanilla warmth, honey?
I find Platinum Egoiste a better fragrance, at least I like it much better.

Yes initial accords are similar, however, less prominent in Egoiste. I don't enjoy its opening, but the drydown (sandalwood) is enjoyable.

Indeed! I asked my girlfriend is she could track it down for my Christmas last year and she said she had got it...but turned out to be Egoiste Platinum, which was a big disappointment. It's an okay frag but not in the original Egoiste class.

Both are orientals. However Egoiste smells much different on skin, than Opium PH. Egoiste is more candied fruit / rosewood, whereas OPH is spicy, tangy citrus.

I love them both, but Egoiste and Opium pour Homme are not at all similar to my nose.

I agree. I have and wear both and I find them different, especially in the drydown.

I love Egoiste and Opium but they smell different to me. IMHO Egoiste really shines in the winter months. Opium--all year long.

After wearing the Egoiste last night, I discovered that the similarities are there. BUT, on skin the Egoiste is so much spicier! Coriander and cinnamon combined with a much lovelier vanilla really put Egoist in a totally different category of quality than Opium.
