Looking for rose recommendations

I am especially fond of the rose in two fragrances: Montale Aoud Damascus and Acqua di Parma Colonia. I like other fragrances with rose too, like Floris' No. 89 and Montale Black Aoud, but my favorites to date are the two above.

In view of those likes, what rose scents should I try?

Some rose scents come across musty to me, and I don't think I like that too much.

If you like Acqua di Parma Colonia, please try Czech & Speake No. 88 and Jean Marie Farina Extra Vieille by Roger & Gallet. They have the same Bulgarian rose note as Colonia.

You will hate me for suggesting it, but I will suggest it anyway:

Amouage - Homage

It is fantastic.

Of course Dominico Caraceni for roses, tobacco, and incense.

Where can you get this mate? I believe it just comes in a 12ml bottle. Is it true?

You simply must try Paestum Rose by Eau D'Italie and No. 88 by Czech & Speake. Both are woody rose fragrances, but the similarity ends there.

Paestum Rose is my very first recommendation for any guy seeking a rose fragrance. It's a pure, natural and transparent rose note paired with a woody blend of pepper, oud and myrrh. It manages to be both true to the flower and yet has a dry and resinous side, and is the most wearable rose I know.

No. 88 is a rich, voluptuous, oriental rose; a heavy and incense-laden damask. Fruity in the top notes, this blooms fully in middle and base when the sandalwood dominates and it becomes slightly smoky in its own rounded way.

Not my cup of tea but might work for you: Rose Poivree, Incense Rose, Aoud Rose Petals, Maroc pour Elle.

I'd second that as an amazing rose. Nevermind that my rent in college was less than a bottle.

scentsitivity, I see you like damascena as your fav rose like mostly I do (btw, I like damascus and Colonia too). You should defintely try Paestum Rose. Maybe you could find No. 88 a bit musty but it's worth a try. Also Creed Fleur de the rose bulgare is an absolutely realistic rose. For a very light twist on rose I suggest also Parfums d'empire eau suave.

I haven't tried Adp Colonia, but I have heard it compared to one of my favorites which I can whole-heartedly recommend, Penhaligon's Castile!

Le Labo Rose 31 & The Different Company Rose Poivre

Not often talked about, but can still be found, and that's Iquitos by Alain Delon. To me a dark Rose, with dry woods in the middle, and a little Musk on the drydown. The Rose is present through out the whole progression of this fragrance. Nothing earth shaking, but will hold It's own against more touted Rose fragrances. IMHO

Iquitos is the only Rose frag I know but I find it completely gorgeous. Went straight into my top five upon discovering it this year (and seems popular with others who've smelled it on me).

If you like evil, dark rose fragrances, Malle's Une Rose is a must-try. Second would be Histoire de Parfum's Noir Patchouli, which is more rose than patchouli. Also Amouage Lyric Men is a dark, spicy rose - and not nearly as pricey per/ml as Homage.

You have to try the not often noted, but finally in Luca Turin’s fall review « ennobled » (****) Grès/Cabaret
"Divine suprise - Cabaret’s combination of pink pepper and incense up top makes it wonderfully fresh, while a clean rosewater note and huge musk gives it a down-pillow softness that makes you want to go back every hour and spray some more. Makes a superb masculine."

A must try : the oppulent Tauer’s Incense rosé « Incense rosé is a mysterious fragrance built around smoking frankincense, with rose and citrus notes, and dark balsamic resins. »

Agree! I have it, love it and highly recommend it. You can find it online for pennies. The bottle looks like something from the 60's TV show I Dream of Jeannie!

Diptyque L'Ombre dans L'Eau, another rose scent to remember. A work of art to me.

Amouage Lyric for Men, while expensive, is still much less costly than Homage, and it may be just the sort of rose you'll enjoy. (If you're willing to shell out for a Montale oudh, the Amouage isn't much more of a stretch.) I'd sample it and see what you think.

I got this in the US from Luckyscent, and it's also available in the US from Aedes.

Problem: No clue where to get in Australia, sorry =(

Yes, it does come in a 12ml bottle but it's so concentrated that you only need a drop.

You might try testing Black Tie from Washinton Tremlett. Luckyscent has samples - very nice rose that is great for any occasion. Also agree with SilverBullet's recomend of Le Labo Rose 31 - it is kind of addictive. I am also enjoying Golden Aoud from Montale although it is a little heavy on the oud scent, but I like it.

Gupts, I'd go to Luckyscent for a sample and if you like it they do ship to Australia as does the Amouage website (write to their UK email address for costs).

Andy Tauer Incense Rosé is probably my favorite rose fragrance, possibly because it combines the rose so well with frankincense (one of my favorite notes). A very close second would be Montale Black Aoud, also because of the presence of a favorite secondary note (in this case, agarwood). And thanks to a sample from Aiona, I'm also really starting to warm up to Le Labo Rose 31 as well. It is a darker, woodier take on rose than most other fragrances present, and it actually lasts for a while. It has a strong similarity to Gucci Pour Homme, come to think of it.

I've just realized that in all three of these cases, the flowery nature of the rose is either muted or concealed in favor of a darker, brooding rose. Interesting ...

I think you have to try

Incense Rosé
No 88
Montale Queen Rose
Une Rose (ed. fred. Malle).

The 4 are amazing in my opinion, and all very different. Enjoy your rose quest

My sample of Lyric (very much a "rose") plus "blotter" of Homage came today. I'm quite intoxicated by them! I would doubt it one can consider Lyric the "edp" of Homage (not that that is what people are implying - just thought I'd say it.) Perhaps much of the topnotes on the Homage blotter have by now dissipated. Interestingly, there is something lingering reminiscent of neroli. Turin mentions citrus oils in PTG.

I would also agree that Malle's Une Rose should be tried by those on a rose quest.

CB I hate Perfume's Tea Rose is wonderful.

Thank you everyone for the many excellent suggestions. I have samples of three of the items mentioned (Castile and two of the Montale's). I will be ordering a bunch of the ones I don't have from TPC very soon and hope to report back on my experiences.

I'm surprised not to find my all time favourite Rose: Sa Majesté de la Rose by Serge Lutens (of Shiseido fame) in the above advices.

Now thats a rose fragrance!

Although it contains absolute of moroccan rose, blue chamomile, geranium, lychee, clove, honey, vanilla and gaiac wood, the first impression is roses, roses, roses. Not sweet, but rosey.

Very elegant, very sophisticated.

Seemingly, it is a unisex fragrance, but I think it is very gentlemanly.

There's a whole collection of 'single' fragrances by Lutens, and if you dare, you can combine these to fit your mood or create your personal fragrance.

In my opinion, Sa Majesté de la Rose is by far the nicest rose cologne/perfume for men...
