Happy New Year Perfumistas and Colognoisseurs!
Week 44 sees the end of 2008 and the beginning of 2009 it sees 15 scents in the top 10 and it sees some surprising entries. We start with the raw numbers. 1,087 posts over 631 scents, 46 of which were posted for the first time. 432 scents were posted just once for an individuality index of 39.7%.This week is almost a carbon-copy of last week in the raw numbers with all of the numbers down but I imagine as Basenotes Nation gets back to work and school next week the numbers will bounce back.
Guerlain leads the big 5 with 105 wears over 28 scents. Vetiver leads the house but spends its second week out of its accustomed top spot. Shalimar was #3 and Habit Rouge #4 as Guerlain stakes out three of the top four spots. Serge Lutens follows right behind with 58 wears over 22 scents. Two scents tie for the House lead and for #5, Ambre Sultan and Borneo 1834. Chanel was third with 43 wears over 18 scents. Antaeus at #10 led the House. Creed was worn 30 times over 16 scents led by Bois du Portugal also at #10. Hermes continues to bring up the rear with 23 wears over 12 scents. Terre DHermes and Ambre Narguile tied for the House lead at #35. Big 5 totals for the week are 259 (23.8%) wears over 96 (15.2%) scents.
While this was a pretty standard week for the big 5 Yves St. Laurent had the most interesting week. YSL had 36 wears over 11 scents, half of those wears were for the weeks #1 scent M7. M7 looks like it might be the party scent of Basenotes. The last four weeks have seen more total wears for M7 than in the 10 weeks previously. Also of interest, Rive Gauche pour Homme posted zero wears. That is after posting four consecutive weeks of 9,10,9,and10 wears. Looks like there is only room for one Yves St. Laurent scent in Basenotes Nations heart at a time. Christian Dior had a normal week led by one of the three scents at #7, Dior Homme. Other Houses on the upswing this week were Bond No. 9 and Lorenzo Villoresi. Bvlgari, Estee Lauder and Armani had down weeks. For Armani this is the third week in a row below average. For a scent which markets itself as a formal, sophisticated scent I find it interesting that when this community turns to its formal scents this House is not one of the Houses that sees an increase.
The remainder of the top 10 was quite an interesting mix led by the other two scents at #7 Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur and Knize Ten. For Knize Ten this was its highest weekly total to date continuing an upswing in wears since Turin & Sanchezs 5-star review. The remaining four scents at #10 are Caron Parfum Sacre, Burberry London for Men, Czech & Speake #88, and Montana Parfum DHomme (red box). For Parfum Sacre and Montana Parfum DHomme this is their first top 10. One last note, this is the second week in a row that Tauer LAir du Desert Marocain is outside of the top 10. This is after 13 weeks in a row in the top 10 which is remarkable for a small niche scent.
