Red vetyver vs. TdH

I used tdh a lot in summertime until I accidently sold it. I know now how I miss this perfect scent since receiving red vetyver in a vial.
And now: I can't smell ANY difference!! Not in topnotes heart or base. Both are the same and both are linear to me. Both last a longtime and have same sillage.
What do you think and suggest??
I somehow want RV. Since I dont see any differences and I'm a niche guy!

I agree, to my inexperienced nose, they smell VERY similar. I have had a sort of falling out of love with TdH, so my opinion on which is better is sort of irrelevant. The slight difference that I noticed between them was that RV seemed slightly better blended and a little more "peppery".

Red Vetyver is deeper, displays more patchouli and doesn't have the mineral aspect that Terre has.
I thought that I could live with just Red Vetyver, but I can't. I now own both again and wear them both frequently.

How do you "accidentally" sell a fragrance?

I think that although TdH and RV are similar they are different enough where you can tell the two apart rather easily. The citrus in Red Vetiver is more complex, the flinty note isn TdH is absent in RV, and RV is a lot spicier. RV also seems smoother.

YES, spicier and smoother definitely.

another vote for the depth and intensity. but, for the sheer versatality or in other words "touch of Ellena" TdH wins my vote hands down in every department.

JWS! welcome back! glad to see your posts!

Thanks jenson...now you stay away from this thread (lol)...you don't like either.

matter of fact im begining to appreciate TdH a lot nowadays which means i now appreciate peppery hot vetivers genre in general... (i think L'Air by Tauer opened my eyes and showed me the way towards this genre)

btw JWS, you must try Parfumerie Generale Querelle if you have'nt already. fantastic rendition of (hot) vetiver and a gem of a scent overall.

Thanks to all. But I know many be voting for RV just because some dont like designer scents. Dont let that fool you on your suggestion.
I own LDDM. And just wearing it now. Its really damn nice
post #10 of 26
I own both and I wear both.
I'm using RV as my colder weather scent because the spiciness seems somehow warmer in the cool weather.
TdH is better on me in the warmer weather as I find it to be lighter and better on me when things are warmer.
There are exceptions to both as I have no problem wearing either at any time but I prefer wearing them the way I have outlined above.

I am content just having Terre d'Hermes.
I concur with JockwithScents observations, and I wear RV in summer because it is a spicyness which is not heavy and it sparkles with the heat IMO
post #13 of 26
You are right, they are very similar; because of this, I prefer TdH.

As much as i love Montale, I also have to agree that they are very similar to my nose.

Therefore, i did not re buy RV when i finished it, keeping my TDH is enough for me. Honnestly i don t think RV is worth the price difference. And i love Montale so i guess it s quite objective

Though smooth, and more intense, I find Red Vetiver less subtle, with the composition and relationship between notes less refined whereas with Terre d'Hermes, I find that while I experience a host of textures and sensations, there is at once a photorealism of the ingredients and also a seamlessness in the way they are brought together that makes me appreciate it more. I think the concentration in Td'H is just right.

after reading this thread i got a sample of Red Vetyver and a sample of TDH today after work.

each is on a separate wrist right now and they both smell almost exactly the same to me.

maybe i'll save myself a bundle and just get TDH instead (though i like Monatale's red bottle )

edit: i'm starting to detect a difference the more they dry down (i applied them about 45 minutes ago). TDH seems to retain a peppery textured scent while RV is become more smoother and more boring. I'm liking TDH more.

2nd edit: now they smell the same again. i'm going crazy.

I thought Hermessence Vetiver Tonka was also very similar to Td'H. And of course, TDC Sel de Vetiver is too.

I tested RV today and agree that it is more aggressive yet smoother in parts but not enough difference where I'd need a Montale over TdH. But if you want to pay more money and get a lighter, more subdued TdH or RV go with Cereus No. 5. Bigger bottle for same Montale price.(75 ml instead of 50 ml for $125) Well done scent.

thats the thing i find in all montales......they dry down so different....like every half hour they smell like something different till like 8 hours later they finally calm down. i would say go with the montale. they are so much more complex ,better ingrediants, and dry down better then almost every fragrance out there.....it is expensive but it really is worth it..

Oh yea, I get from shower to shower longevity. Everybody already knows I am a Red Vetyver fan boy, but I just love this fragrance. Full wearings are the only way to do it justice. I love Terre too, but Red Vetyver has the cistus and heavier patchouli that set it off. It is deeper and grows like bamboo on your skin.

I recently fell for Givenchy - Vetyver too because of the full wearings of it. To live in a fragrance for a couple of days is really the only way to give it a fair shot to learn of the twists and turns it may give.
