Ungaro I and II - kindly bear with my rantings...

Ungaro I : One of the first things that one would notice when they apply ungaro I is it's smoldering quality. The definition of "smoldering" fits this scent so perfectly that i cant really associate any other scent with that word. the definition (of smoldering) by the way is "to burn slowly and gently, usually with some smoke, but without a flame". How apt. i think it's patchouli oil along with woody resins and lavender which gives it this smoky, wax like feel and heat.

This scent opens with a very warm note of lavender melting into a wax like note of rose, smoldering on patchouli oil and woody notes. By mid notes, this wax like accord gets more blunt and sorta envelopes the wearer. The interplay of woody and floral notes gets more airy on a base of earthy notes with each passing minute, all this while still retaining the core essense of the opening accord, which is it's damp earth like warmth and "polished with wax" smokiness of lavender, rose and woods with hints of deep notes of spices. it's sheer in nature, never failing to amaze. amber holds the base with lovely notes of sandalwood well rounded off with soft notes of tonka bean..which smells like vanilla pods...it's in a way a prequel to III, or may be III was inspired by I. There is a reason why this is hailed as a classic and it's quite justified. comparing it's quality (of ingredients and composition) with Patou is only obvious.

Patou Ph & Prive, Havana, Havana Reserva, Ungaro I, II & III(yet to try the original formulation of III), Morabito OR black+more... - get these while it is still available...the quality of these scents has had me gasping for more...im sure it'll find more suitable admirers...

Ungaro II: Opens with a powdery blast of citrus with hints of rose. 10 minutes into this scent and boy! this one turns into a Stuffy, fur like, Animalic scent! smells of cat fur up close. this is a "CIVET" prominent scent with loads of lavender and musk thrown in. by mids-basenotes, this scent gets even more sexier with the addition of absolutely divine notes of sandalwood. to me, this is essentionally a civet based scent with heart of lavender on a base of musk and lovely notes of sandalwood. in short, Civet, Lavender, Rose and Sandalwood are the true stars of this gem smells very classy and complex all the way from top to bottom.. i'd almost eat myself up when wearing this one. TOP Notch scent!! i'm rushing in for a back up bottle as i'd never want to be without this one. a bold release from the house of Ungaro.

Where are you going to rush to? I thought UII was discontinued long ago. If you have a secret source, please let me know, 'cause I'll be rushing right behind you.

Great reviews Jenson! Of all the discontinued scents, Ungaro I is the one I wish was still around.

Great reviews of great scents.

Well described.
When I tried them, I thought No1 was very good, but that No 11 was fabulous.

Good thread Jen.

I love I & III. I just never got the civet like I wanted to from Ungaro II or the longevity, but it's probably the best smelling of all three.....and THAT's saying something.

Best triumvirate there is.

Two and three were ooooookay but smelled a whole lot like other scents formulated by Mr Polge ( or Polge and his understudy Demachy as pointed out in another thread) and to this day I don't get the fuss over them. Ungaro 1, however, is a totally different story. Mind you I'm not going to make any claims about how far and wide I've ranged sniffing the perfumer's art but I've tried on my share. Not once have I ever found another even remotely close to 1 and don't think I ever will. Art in a bottle if there ever was such a thing. Thanks for the reminder Jenson.

I've never tried I, but II strikes me as an incredibly delicate animalic floral. However, I prefer Habit Rouge EdC when I want something along those lines, but not as one dimensional or as strong. Excellent for what it is, though, no question.

Thanks, Jenson! Great reviews.

Excellent reviews as always buds!

Nicely stated. I & II are my favorites of the trio. (They are both still sold in my city in a little discount perfume shop!)

Never had the pleasure of I but I enjoy II

II reminds me of Chanel Pour Monsieur

hmmm...i do have both chanel PM (1955) and the Chanel PM concentrate...none remind me of Ungaro II, quite unfortunately....

I guess what I meant was that for a frag with such a clear and dominant animalic quality, it is not oppressive at all (I only used one spray per sampling). Compare to Vermeil, for example.

well, i dont think people will take to liking this scent immediately. so, i dont particularly think it's a easy scent to go with... but hey, to each his own.

I absolutely love Ungaro Pour L'Homme (UI) but found UII to be a big disappointment. The opening is so promising with lavender and bergamot followed by civet (ish stuff) but it drops into everlasting musk mode much too early and too loud for me.

Great reviews jenson - I can feel how excited you are through your words.

I hated Ungaro III when I sampled it (new, not old juice). I haven't smelled I or II yet.

Thanx for chiming in Hirch..btw, didnt you get a nice sandalwood thing going towards the base...? i found this phase really enjoyable...probably skin chemistry or maybe the way our nose interprets musk...?

Thnx Mike! i really am excited about these two!

Yes, the re-formulated Ungaro III is disgusting, even more so when compared with the quality and composition standards of I & II. matter of fact, i can imagine how the vintage juice would be after experiencing the level I & II had set.

Scentemental and Foetidus have confirmed that the Vintage III has a much fuller, richer feel and a more pronouced note of sandal wood with hints of leather.....*sighs*
