Scents from the 70's and 80's that one shouldnt miss (scents to try before you d*e)

would Aigner #1 be one such classic? or Bozzini?

This thread is to help someone like me who gets lost in those websites loaded with 100's of fragrances, most of them from the 70's and 80's..some from 90's too... the notes often tempt, but then there is no review on basenotes....no review on basenotes? thats a straight "no blind buy" for me right there.

could the experts here guide relatively newcomers like us into this world of reasonably priced classics, or lets say, one hit wonders from the past...?

p.s. price is no criteria. scent is.

I've never tried Aigner, but here are some that I can think of:

Paco Rabanne
Polo
Aramis
Yatagan
Third Man
Derby
Kouros

Just to name a few.
Naaaa, I say skip Aigner #1 and, er, "Bozzini"? Not important enough in the history of or as reflection of the period.

I'm sure there are fans of them out there, but they really don't reflect much. I regret to admit that this is the first time I can recall my eyes passing over the name "Bozzini."

well a fragance that take the 80's power is

Giorgio Beverly Hills VIP Reserve Limited Edition Rich,Strong,Power,Macho.....
a must have in any serious 80's collection. in the same level of Patou Homme.

Howdy, jenson!
Here's some of my favorites from that era. WIth the exception of Yatagan (well-known), I've tried to pick more obsure but really excellent ones. Armani may not be obscure but it doesn't get a lot of mention. No surprise, my list profiles green scents and woody scents.

1975 L'eau Trois, Diptyque
1976 Yatagan
1978 Barbier des Iles, Comptoir sud Pacifique
1980 Worth pour Homme
1981 Woods of Windsor for Gentleman
1982 Roger & Gallet L'Homme
1983 Grafton, Truefitt&Hill
1984 Armani Eau Pour Homme
1987 Basile Uomo

Benetton Colors, the black bottle.
Can't find it anymore.
Some of the above suggestions are compelling. I'll add endorsement to:

Paco Rabanne
Azzaro
YSL PH
Cacharel Pour L`Homme

(** If Caron's 3rd Man qualifies for the 70s than it is also a very important one)
Givenchy Gentleman gets some attention from time to time but it's certainly a wonderful thing, even in the reformulation. I'd also add Quorum, one of the surviving citrusy leathers of the period--added a flourish of moss and richer florals to the 60's Aramis thing.
Versace L Homme
DiorFahrenheit
CK Obsession
CK Eternity
Aramis Tuscany
In order of my personal preference - try these for sure:

Rochas Macassar
Signoricci
Patou pour Homme
Patou pour Homme Prive
Guerlain Derby
Hermes Equipage
Versace L' Homme
Van Cleef & Arpels pour Homme

almost forgot: Versailles pour Homme by Jean Desprez
post #18 of 45
Lagerfeld classic
Egoiste (is it from the late 80s?)
Polo (original)
Worth Pour Homme (1980)
Of the ones already mentioned, my three choices would be:

Pierre Cardin
Cacharel Pour L'homme
Versace L'homme

Caron's 3rd Man doesn't qualify for the '70s, but it definitely qualifies for the '80s and it absolutely belongs on this thread.

I'm also surprised nobody has mentioned Givenchy III, which I've yet to sample but which always gets great marks on BN.
Leonard pour homme from 1980 is one of my absolute favorite!
I will choose one that's right in the middle:

Cellini (for men) by Fabergé.

I will not say -for now- if it's good or bad, but it sure is unforgettable.

Here's an ad i kept for old time's sake:

Ah, for the '80s, check out Dior Jules; a kind of green leather chypre with some animalic and floral overtones... It's my SotD today, and a kind of summing up of a lot of the trends of this period...

Got to go with Kouros
I'm not sure if it is a 70's or 80's scent but there are two that I liked 1. J.Casanova 2. The Baron
post #43 of 45
I wore a lot of Obsession and Givenchy Gentleman in the 80s. And by a lot I mean 'too much'

The only scents from that period I wear with any frequency now are Derby and Santos Concentree.
I'd like to add these long lost ones from the '70's:
Jovan Grass Oil for Men
Oleg Cassini for Men
Stuff I've tried and liked:
Giorgio Beverly Hills & Givenchy Gentleman (either or for these 2. GBH is my SOTD)
Armani Eau Pour Homme
Eau de Guerlain
Eau d'Orange Verte
Équipage
YSL pour Homme
Pierre Cardin Pour Monsieur
Aramis 900
Tuscany
Azzaro pour Homme
Fahrenheit
Obsession for Men
Eternity for Men
Joop Homme (go for the Aftershave Splash and decant into a bottle with a spray)

Stuff I've tried, didn't like, but think others should check out anyway:
Paco Rabanne Pour Homme
