Welcome to The Road to the Final Spritz I’m your host Somerville Metro Man, here to re-cap the first two days of action in Basenotes.net’s March Madness 2009. We’ve finished the first eight games on the schedule with action from three of the four regions.
We’ll start in the Serge Lutens Region where Top seed Thierry Mugler A*Men crushed the play-in winner Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue pour Homme 39-14. This contest was never in doubt as the Mugler Maniacs in the stands were chanting “na-na-na, hey, hey, hey, good-bye” early on. A*Men’s competition in the second round will be Viktor & Rolf Antidote which had a tougher time with its opponent in Armani Acqua di Gio, winning 30-22. Antidote can’t be looking forward to facing the Mugler Maniacs in Round 2.
Out in the Comme des Garcons region, upsets were the order of the day. The number 11 seed L’Artisan Tea for Two pulled out a tense victory over number six seed Gucci pour Homme 31-28. This was a close contest all the way with a late three-pointer paving the way to victory for the T42 fans. They will be playing another double digit seed in #14 Dior Fahrenheit in the second round. As they pulled off the first upset in the tournament as they knocked off the #3 seed Helmut Lang Cuiron pour Homme. Fahrenheit got out to an early lead and held on as Cuiron put on a strong finish but couldn’t overcome the early deficit.
Four games in the Guerlain region and three of the four held to form as the higher seeds advanced. The only exception was Caron L’anarchiste, as an 11 seed, defeating the sixth seeded Ungaro III 30-21. They will take on Comme des Garcons Monocle Scent One: Hinoki which as a number three seed had an unexpectedly difficult time shaking off the fourteenth seeded John Varvatos, 29-26. The final two games were the number four seed Creed Green Irish Tweed beating Azzaro pour Homme 30-22 and fifth seed Guerlain L’Instant pour Homme beating Davidoff Cool Water 39-18. This sets up a powerhouse second round match-up between the two winners. L’Instant has to be feeling confident on its home turf in the Guerlain Bracket but Green Irish Tweed is one of the more experienced tournament scents and it will be tough to beat; home boutique advantage or not.
Keep voting and watching as only you have the ability to determine the winner.
