Dunhill for Men (1934) by Alfred Dunhill

This classic belongs to the league of extraordinary gentlemen. Ok... I'm exaggerating a little but, make no mistake, all the raves about this masterpiece is spot-on. But am I the only one to detect the musky civet note (or is this just the sexy leather note?) and this note renders the whole scent with a sheen of sensuality that is almost sublime. I'll put this one on for this weekend's party and I will be a hit with the ladies, I'm sure. Shame about its discontinuation.

Thirty years later, this is still around, and still pleasing, at least to some people. I have been on a green kick for a few days, so this one came to hand today. I think the green top is the most captivating part, but the floral-spicy heart and the woody oriental base with a touch of leather make this a winner all around. Leather chypre; bergamot in the top, moss and patchouli in the base: the classic formula. Elegant, but approachable; comfortable; relaxed yet confident. This is the late seventies guy feeling his freedom and totally cool with it. Is today's world so different? Maybe this is one sense in which we could call this a "heritage scent."

Up early today and I am sampling a rather provocative incense fragrance

Annick Goutal Encens Flamboyant

This fragrance comes on with a blast of fire and then the dry down comes on with a very distinct note of sharp pepper to my nose.

It is indeed a very well done fragrance, but for $175 USD for 100 ml of real EDP, places it squarely to the test of many other fine fragrances on my list.

But so far, I am digging AG's work on this one.

I hope Everyone has a Great and very productive Wednesday!

New day, new line for me:

M Micallef Black Sea

Husband and wife Martine Micallef and Geoffrey Newman established M Micallef in 1997 and Black Sea is one of their earlier efforts. This is a spicy scent which manages to not be overpowering on me. Right from the top the spices come out to play as clove and pepper show up first. They give way to the saffron; soft, smooth, and exotic. The saffron leads the way into the heart which is predominantly gaiac. The mix at the interface, between top and heart, of saffron and gaiac is breathtakingly beautiful and I wanted it to last longer. It seems like these two notes are olfactory soul mates to my nose. The gaiac is joined by an incense note as the saffron fades away. This part of the development suffers because of what came before, it is fine and it isn't jarringly out of place, I just wanted this to be something more. The base is vanilla with the gaiac and incense also sticking around in the background. I like Black Sea but there is a moment there where I thought this was going to be incredible.

Have a Wicked Wednesday everyone.
