Best niche, independent, artisanal or boutique fragrance

Hey,

I'm going to the States soon and I plan on buying myself three bottles of perfume.

And I'm not talking about the perfume you can find at any random perfumerie, though nothing wrong with these. I'm talking about the "exclusive" fragrances.

I'm looking for something unique, something extraordinary, something that is gonna blow my nose of and make me wanna smell my self all day long.

I think I've got enough to spend for three bottles of around 100 ml each.

These fragrances will fall into three categories I thought of;

1) Warm, woody and sweet, fit for the evening and winters.
Possible notes; Vanilla, Musk, Lavender, Bergamot, Sandalwood, Amber

- Musc Ravageur by Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle
- Blue Amber by Montale
- Fumerie Turque by Serge Lutens
- No. 88 by Czech & Speak

2) Young, fresh and clean, fit for the daytime and summers.
Possible notes; Citrus, Vetiver, Lemon, Peppermint, Cypress, White Musk

- Colonia Intensa by Acqua di Parma
- Vétiver Extraordinaire by Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle
- Wall Street by Bond No. 9
- New York by Parfums de Nicolaï

3) Extraordinary, fresh and sweet, fit for use all year long.
Possible notes; Tuberose, Rose, Geranium, Jasmine, Irish, Leather

- Black Aoud by Montale
- Bois d'Argent Cologne by Christian Dior
- H.M. by Hanae Mori
- Ormonde Man by Ormonde Jayne

All of these fragrances are picked out from reading reviews and what member from basenotes have to say, and a third of them I've already smelled once in my life. I hope you can help me with choosing the correct perfume for me. I'm a young adolescent male just out or puberty at the front steps of my life.

I'm eager to test all of these nine perfumes when I'm in the states. I'm gonna be in New York City for two weeks; enough time to test a sample a day and take notes.

The last thing I need to know is one or two perfumeries in Manhattan where I could get samples and buy these fragrances from.

And ladies, you're more than welcome to give away what makes you go crazy by smelling it on a man.

Peace out,
PP

Aedes de Venusta on Christopher St is where you need to head when you get to Manhattan. They have many of the fragrances you mention.

It seems that you could find those anywhere in the world; and yes, visit Aedes De Venusta. Then, take an hour or so to visit Caswell & Massey to experience the quintessential American fragrance line.

One note: I would not call Czech & Speake's No. 88 a "fresh and sweet" scent.

If you covered a bed in rose petals, and then had a night of wild sex with a gorgeous woman on that bed, No. 88 smells like that bed the morning after.

Great scent, but not much fresh or sweet about it to my nose.

Add Creed's Bois du Portugal to your list to try. Although you'd find the Creed scents as easily in France as you would here.

EDIT:

If you're looking for exclusive and Amreican, stop by Le Labo and give their scents a sniff. They're not that far from Aedes de Venustas.

Thank you guys for your input! I wish I could get them all

I'm gonna check out if there are some perfumeries in Amsterdam at which I could get a sample from.
I prefer buying in the states because of the EUR/USD currency rates. If I buy three bottles of more than 130,- USD each, It could save me at least 100 EUR!

I've put No. 88 by Czech & Speake under the warm and sweet category and I've added Blue Amber by Montale and Bois du Portugal by Creed to the list.

You should unpack and use them profusely before travelling home, otherwise you may ed up paying customs and Dutch VAT and your savings will evaporate.

@ the_good_life; Thanks for the tip!

After reading a number of reviews, I've gotten most intriguied by Musc Ravageur, Colonia Intensa and Blue Amber. So I'll start my search by looking for a sample of these three first.

It's still at least three months till I plan on going to the states.
So I'll keep this thread updated with my findings on the diffferent fragrences I'm testing.

UPDATE: Just got a sample of Musc Ravageur in Amsterdam! And it smells like heaven... and sex. I've never smelled anything like this before in my life! I already got a compliment from a very cute HB9 walking behind me. Unbelievable! Will post a review soon as it starts wearing of. To be continued...

i would go with c&s no.88 & ormonde man (hemlock note is sooo tempting) but it would be better to order them online from UK since those companys are from UK (65 pounds for any 100ml C&S and 58 pounds for 50ml of ormonde man) You wont find it cheaper in .us!
so if you are going to .us try to get some hard to get in .eu scents

When you're in NYC, in addition to Aedes you should go to Bergdorf Goodman's fragrance department. If you still have time check out Henri Bendel and/or Barneys. These three stores all have great fragrance departments. There will be some overlap between all four, but there will also be exclusives at all four.

Wouldn't it be better to buy yourself 3 small atomisers and then decant 10mL or so of each fragrance into the atomisers?

It seems I'm going to London in three weeks!
I remember times when the Pound was twice as much worth as the Euro. Then I wouldn't dare to dream of buying something in the UK, everything would cost twice as much!

However... since the Credit Crunch the British have been printing money leading the Pound to drop to almost the same worth as the Euro. Opportunity anyone?

Thank you guys a lot for recommending me some places in NY. I hope some of you also know some fine perfumeries in London

Cheers,
PP

Review of Musc Ravageur (2000)
by Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle

Three days ago I picked up a sample of Musc Ravaguer from Skin Cosmetics in Amsterdam. The very same day I wore the fragrance to properly review it for myself. My first sniff of MR reminded me of...... medicine; a very sweet and sexy medicine! I applied one spray on each wrist first. I took another big sniff from my wrist and was amazed by the richness of the smell. In the opening MR is warm and relaxing. I just couldn't stop sniffing my wrists. At last I applied one spray in my neck. As I leave the store I couldn't help but notice there was already a cloud of dark sweetness floating around me. MR sticks to my body like some kind of freaky aura!

After about half an hour the medicine smell evolves into a sweet masculine scent. Notes of Lavender and Cinnamon prevail with a hint of vanilla. At this point a young girl walks past behind me. I can hear her body inhale and her nose sniffing the air behind me. She yells at me from 2 metres distance; "Dude! That perfume you're wearing smells soooo good! I give her a smile and then reply; "I know." The range of MR is phenomenal. As I'm walking I just can't stop smelling myself. I even turn in circles just to smell the scent spread out.

It's now six hours since I applied MR. Now the scent is turning more darker and softer, but still remains present. The sweetness gets soften out and darker notes of Sandalwood and Tonka of take their place. The scent is fitting for the view; as the final stage of MR illuminates the sun is setting slowly in the horizon. I think I've fallen in love...

It takes more than twelve hours on my skin for the scent to fade away, and even now traces of sweet Clove and Musk are still sniffable on my skin. Musc Ravageur is a sophisticated scent with excellent longevity and extraordinary range. The perfume is sweet, warm, intimate, sensual, sexy and even erotic. I love it! Maurice Roucel has made a true masterpiece.

He'll not end up paying customs taxes and Dutch VAT if the value of imported goods
will be 430,- euro or less. This rule is valid here in Holland from December 2008,
see http://www.douane.nl/430euro/

Things that'd make you want to smell yourself all day long:

Vanilla (Evening): Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille OR Guerlain SDV

Iris/Incense/Honey (Day): Bois d'Argent Cologne by Christian Dior should be the one fit for daytime and summers. Youthful and elegant, soft but surprisingly very long lasting. Thumbs up! (visit Dior Homme boutique and also try the two other offerings: Cologne Blanche and Eau Noire)

All Year: Serge Lutens Douce Amere (extraordinary and sweet)

Something Special: Red Aoud by Montale (don't buy in shop! order directly from Montale in Paris!) My favorite from the Montale line, very gourmand-esque!

Hmm. Why do you want to purchase it in US when you should make use of relatively low rate of Euro at your advantage? It will be better if you purchase it in UK and make use of the current forex market. I am trying to hunt down a bottle of Amouage Homage from UK.

I'm still looking for samples from Montale.
