Let's just say it is not love-at-first-sniff. I'm giving this time before I comment further.

Today's SOTD: My first test of Parfumerie Generale Un Crime Exotique.

The top was like a cheap mall-store orange spice candle with a generous hit of what I'm assuming is vanilla bourbon, which always smells like cotton candy to me.

This is supposed to be gingerbread and tea, and I do get a hint of tea hours later when some of the orange spice candle scents subsides, but the cotton candy just won't give up.

This would make a great a soap or something, but not a $105 perfume. Sorry...

Unfortunately my throat cold moved into my nose today, so I am really stuffed up. But in between the congestion, I get tiny whiffs of my scent and it's just lovely stuff. So grateful to have this one in my wardrobe.

Insensé
(1993)
Daniel Molière

Top Notes: Black currant, Mandarin, Basil, Lavender, Mandarin
Middle Notes: Carnation, Cinnamon, Magnolia, Lily of the Valley, Iris, Geranium, Lentiscus
Base Notes: Amber, Cedar, Leather, Oakmoss, Musk, Vetiver, Sandalwood, Fir Balsam

A floral for men, and what a floral! An incredibly rich mix of floral notes in the heart with a citrus-fruity herbal top, and grounded in woods and amber. A kind of light chypre accord (no patchouli, but oakmoss in the base, with citrus top notes) complements what is essentially a fougère fragrance. Can men wear this? Some men think it feminine, but it was made for us, guys! I say "Hop to it!" The name, by the way, is French for "senseless," "foolish," "insane." A good name, I think, since it really does drive me crazy!

With a dull evening ahead of me, I went shopping!

So, my SOTE is a bunch of tests:

Left wrist: Le Labo Bergamot 22.

The first 2 or 3 hours were mostly a green forest scent, complete with moss, with a tiny, tiny touch of bergamot brightening the top a bit. As the night progressed, the bergamot has strengthened, while the forest has died down. Oddly, this works way better than it sounds like it should. Recommended for fans of Bois D'Orage/French Lover (mtgprox, I'm talking to you...)

Left arm: My second try of Frederic Malle Geranium Pour Monsieur.

This time, I'm getting more mint and less geranium. Aside from an awkward point in the beginning, the mint + green leaves mostly comes off as a refreshing tea (this same kind of mix is the main point of Barneys' Route De The Pour Homme, but it has tobacco in it, too). I'm not getting the rose geranium or anise I got last time. And I'm still not completely sold - it's getting sour on me somehow...

Right Arm: Fantastic Man, brand spanking new frag with a cheezy name from Byredo.

Spicy, woody, and a tad musky, with a touch of incense. Classic in its inspirations but still very "now." I get non-sweaty cumin, bark - probably cedar, fragrant wood furniture, sap, someone burning incense while camping in the woods. I could see this becoming a basenotes favorite with the fans of this sort of thing (I'm thinking of Odysseus, based on his SOTD reviews). Kind of a more wearable Dzongka or a less artificial CdG incense series. Definitely worth checking out.
