From the Note Identification Project thread:

Galangal, Indonesia, Eden Botanicals Strange spice used in Indian and Thai cuisine. Galangal comes from a root. The aroma is pungent, similar to mint-anise-cardamom, but also earthy and bittersweet.

It is one of the ingredients in the famous Thai soup - Tom Yam Kung. It belongs to the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) and the smell is lighter and fresher than ginger.

Galangal smells pretty different from ginger. I perceive a eucalyptus-pepper-anise kind of note. The root is very similar and related to those of turmeric and ginger.

Opium Pour Homme has this note, and I find it noticeable there.
