Citrus / Citronellol

From the Note Identification Project thread:

Citronellol. - Not as sharp as citral - much lighter. Yet still penetrating. Linear, and citrus-like. I could almost see this in the rose scents. I rubbed my hands in glee.

Slightly citrus Rose, more like citronella (ie: bug repellant) than lemon

Citronellol is one of the "Rose Alcohols" (others include Geraniol, Nerol and Phenyl Ethyl Alcohol). It is found in Rose oil and Absolute, but also in Geranium oil. If it smells of Citronella it is not a good quality. Citronellol, an alcohol, can oxidise to the aldehyde CitronellAL which is found in Citronella Oil. Citronellol should smell quite heavy, fruity Rose. For a much more citric rose try Geraniol (also found in Rose Oil and Geranium Oil). And the reason Geraniol smells more Lemon like is because it oxidises to its equivalent aldehyde Geranial, which is one isomer (the other is Neral, from Nerol) of Citral found in Lemon, and Lemongrass.
