Notes that come out in the Sillage

As we all know, you cannot judge a fragrance from a wrist test, it's just not possible (or at least not advisable). My SotD today is my first use of my new bottle of Borneo 1834, and while I am completely loving it (and may have put on a tad too much ), I am pretty surprised at all the other stuff that's coming out from wearing it underneath my shirt and catching only the distant sillage as opposed to the upclose wrist version. It's far spicier than it is smelled upclose and I'm even smelling something that reminds me of cinnamon. What are other fragrances that in your opinion are completely different smelled up close versus in the sillage?

Kouros for me. Smelling it upclose from the wrist or forearm completely numbs my sense of smell for a few minutes. From far (even from the neck) i can actually make out some of the notes better.

I think pretty much the majority of frags work in a similar fashion , no !?! ... I am constantly surprised as to how often I find that a frag is quite different when worn fully, as opposed to just a quick "wrist sampling". ...
And then, of course, there's the whole thing of "dabbed" versus "sprayed" . As dabbed is most often the way a wrist sampling goes (when out of a sample vial, not atomiser). And that definitely often smells differently than when sprayed.

Did you dabb on the Borneo when you did the wrist sampling ???

Yep, it was dabbed. I agree that most frags wear differently when given a full wearing, but some moreso than others. Often times a wrist test, is enough to get a good idea of what the frag smells like (I wave my arm in front of my face from about a foot away to smell the sillage), but I'm interested in the fragrance where you truly get an almost different frag from afar. In this case Borneo smelled of course of the patchouli up close, and later in it's development I got the camphorous notes up close. Far away though, I get a ton more dark cocoa, cinnamon, spices. It's a whole different beast.

On the opposite side Clinique Happy needs to be smelled upclose to get a hint of the scent.

L' Heure Bleue

Up close: A open spice market bazaar, very Middle-eastern.
Sillage: flowery, bread-like/pastry iris and Guerlainade

Yep, I have just pulled out my sample of Borneo, and gave it another sampling. And you are absolutely correct ! ... I can smell exactly what you mean.

I will try think of others to add to your post . As I cannot think of any at the moment.

Another one (actually two) that I'd like to mention are Escentric Molecules Escentric 01 and 02. I like 01 better, both aren't great, to downright bad up close, but 01 espicially has devistatingly beautiful sillage. Everything comes together seamlessly in 01, swirling lime and cedar and vetiver (if I remember correctly). Up close it smells like cedar and celery.

the sillage of guerlain's vetiver smells quite different, much lighter, and significantly less spicy, than it smells up close.
