Apple Ipod Woes

Well I have spent my entire morning and early afternoon trying to sort out my iPod software nightmare. There was a new software update on iTnues so I thought I had better get it ...considering my Ipod Touch has not been trouble free since I bought it .
Well it crashed my iPod Touch , wouldn't restore - just Error 14 repeatedly ... I tried everything under the sun including the advice on the Apple help pages and discussion forums.

The Apple expert contact online requires $29 payment for a one time call of help after warranty has expired with no guarantee of getting the problem fixed . I was ready to throw in the towel and get another iPod Touch . However, I decided to try one more thing - creating a new User Account, downloading iTunes and restoring from there and it worked- thank goodness.
I have so much music on my iTunes over 1.500 songs - I was getting pretty upset that Apple can release software that actually kills your iPod .
After reading the apple discussions- it seems a lot of people are having this exact problem as me.
Thanks for letting me vent here.
A word of warning - I seriously think the new software update is buggy so think twice before you download it .
My iPod classic was much more stable than the iPod Touch too .

Thanks for the warning on the new iTunes software. I haven't updated it yet, so maybe I'll wait-- I use an iPod classic. The one thing that drives me NUTS is occasionally when I try to sync some new music onto my iPod before heading out, and I get this message about "some data appears to be corrupt" and it wipes EVERYTHING off of my iPOD! Then I have to restore it and resync all over again, and it can take hours because of the amount of music I have.

One thing that surprised me though-- earlier in the year I was having problems with my 3 year old iMac which was past its warrantee. I made an appointment to go to the Genius Bar at the Apple Store to have them look at it (I couldn't get my browser to load, and I've been having horizontal lines on my screen). They looked at my computer thoroughly and gave me some advice. But it was totally free-- I didn't have to pay them anything like I would through a $29 phone call. Some of my issues got fixed, but I'm still having problems with my computer (lines, strange holes in the graphics--I don't know if it's a hardware or software program, and it locks up often, causing me to have to restart it). I'll probably just have to get a new one when I get the cash. Still, it was nice to be able to take it to the Apple Store and have them work with it-- so I do recommend that.

But back to your situation, mysticknot, I also had to set up a different user account to even access a browser. This went on for months-- everytime I was logged into my normal account if I clicked on Safari, it would hang up and I'd get the "infinite beach ball" until I shut it down. This went on for MONTHS. Then one day, I don't know why, but I tried again and it worked! I don't know how it happened, but it made me happy.

IndieGuy- thanks for the help - Apple software can drive me nuts too. I'm glad Apple helped you for free- I think they should .
I would really wait before downloading any new software- nothing Apple have updated lately seems stable. People using the Classic have been having problems too - as I read on the forums .

I called BestBuy too and also my nearest Apple Store which ironically is currently closed ( till 10th October ) for updating themselves- can you believe it ?

I buy a ton of music from the iTunes store. I just don't have time to run off to the record store to buy CDs-- but there's one thing that I think iTunes should offer-- since they have a record of everything you buy from them, they should offer you catastrophic insurance on your music investment should you lose your computer/backups. I think of the thousands of dollars worth of CDs that are covered by my renters insurance, but what happens if I lose every song I bought from iTunes store? There's got to be a way to restore lost music to the registered owner if something happens. Just something else I was thinking about.

Funny that I had the same kind of "can't restore" error as you, Mysticknot! I went to the Genius Bar (I'm lucky enough to have an Apple store practically within walking distance). They told me the hard drive on the iPod had died and essentially, it was a brick. As awful as this is, I didn't feel too too bad because I'd won it (an 80G "Classic") at a work thing. My iTunes, even the new version, worked fine.

For my trouble, I got 10% off a new iPod (a 5th generation 16G Nano this time). Another strange thing - the new nano with the video cam is great, but there are no cases/covers/skins, etc. compatible with it!! All the 4th gen cases available obscure the videolens/mic. Wouldn't one have thought that Apple would talk to the people that make the ancillary products? Sheesh!

IndieGuy- I tell you I was extremely concerned I was going to lose all my music when I downloaded a new iTunes in the new User Account and none of my usual music was showing up on it......calculating my losses in music purchases against the cost of a brand new iPod - I was willing to just buy a new iPod. I am so lost without my music , videos - I use for my yoga work too .

Bakerloo Line- they told you the hard disk died ? OMG ..... Well I am glad you got a discount- you should .
Apple try to keep as much within their own company as possible - really is annoying .
