Would anyone know, when reading through a very long web document with many pages (like the ones we often comes over on Basenotes), how to quickly go to the next (or previous page), WITHOUT HAVING TO MOVE THE MOUSE AND CLICK ON THE NEXT PAGE (OR PREVIOUS PAGE) TABS????

I'm currently trying to read through a very long Basenotes web page with over 600 pages and it would save me a lot of time if I didn't have to move the mouse and click each time I wanted to go to the next page. I've been trying to find out a way by googling it but so far have not been successful.

Thanks.

There's no way to do that because all of the "pages" haven't been loaded into the memory of your computer. For instance, "page one" displays posts one through 50. Clicking the next page link simply tells the server to load the same file (if you look in the address bar of your server, you'll see it's showthread.php), only this time starting at post 51 and going all the way through to post 100. But there is no actual next page.

So bottom line is, you have to tell the server with every click of the mouse to display the next set of messages.

Thanks, Merlino. Maybe someday. I just found out how to switch between my browser and Word without have to use the mouse (on the MAC using the 'Command Key' plus Tab) so I thought there might exist a similar type of keystroke function which would get me to the next page on a Web document. It would surely make it easier to move through a large web document if that possibility somehow existed.

Sometimes, you can use ALT + right arrow to advance to the next page. Some sites are set up to allow navigation that way, but many, like Merlino said, can't do it until you have those pages already in your history. If I manually click to pages 2 and 3 in a long Basenotes thread, I can use Alt + ← or ALT → to go back and forth in the same thread, but that doesn't solve your question.

You could also go to your Edit Options page and under Thread Display Options, change the number of posts that display per page. You're probably seeing 20 posts per page, and you could change it to 100 posts per page. That would mean fewer page clicks in a long thread.

I've never tried the Autopager add-on for the Firefox browser, but one review claims that it should work for lengthy forum threads, too.

Yes, that works if the website is set up to accept those specific hotkeys. For example, postings on some fora may be submitted by pressing alt+s instead of clicking the submit button. However, BN doesn't allow for browsing to the next page by using alt+→ or submitting via alt+s.

Those combinations are the defaults for back and forward in your browser history

Going to try this one, thanks!

Thanks, tang. I'll be checking out the Firefox 'Autopager' add-on....

Edit: If you get it to work, Merlino, please let us know. I was having a little trouble understanding the tutorial in the Help section, duh.

Right, that's why I said:

I don't really have any use for the Autopager add-on myself, but I'd be interested in hearing how it works for you!
