Newbie, looking for something Vanilla/Tonka Bean/Woodsy/Musky!

Hey guys,

I'm a huge newbie when it comes to all things fragrant, but recent developments have made me eager to dive into this strange new world!

I'm a 22 y/o guy and up until this point I'd never bothered with cologne. Basically I was given a huge gift basket from L'Occitane, and it included a bunch of goodies including two of their EDT's: Eau des Baux and Eau des Badian.

Badian is too citrusy and crisp for me, but the Baux really piqued my interest. I put it on early one morning and I didn't really like it, but 12 hours later I was watching a movie and a friend ended up face-planting into my chest, and she remarked at how good it smelt. I agreed! The basenotes or drydown or whatever ended up clinging to my shirt and I couldn't stop smelling it. It just smells sexy and dry and alluring!

These are Baux's notes according to their website:

Top Note: Pink pepper, Cardamom
Middle Note: Cyprus, Incense
Base Note: Vanilla, Tonka Bean

So while I'm enamoured with the base notes and the incense of the mid, I didn't really like the opening. I'm looking for stellar candidates in this category to check out that are more oriented to the drydown that I'm loving so much.

Versace The Dreamer or Le Male, perhaps?

Maybe something like these:
Guerlain - L'Instant Pour Homme
Lanvin - Arpège Pour Homme
Gucci Pour Homme
Cartier - Santos Concentrée

Btw, I agree: Eau des Baux is really nice! (Of the ones above, my favourite drydown is the Santos)

Maybe even the ultra-exclusive Mouchoir de Monsieur by Guerlain

P d'Nicolai Vanille-Tonka would be a great choice I think. The opening is a big burst of lime, but is gone after about 10 min., turning into a vanilla that is not sweet but incredibly fresh smelling. Midway through, an incense note creeps in to keep it very interesting through the end. It's available on line, and maybe a bit pricey - but worth getting a sample and trying.

Burberry Brit might be to your liking.

Did you like the Vanilla or the Incense more? or both?
(PS - Baux was one of my first full bottle purchases, I just love that stuff and have been sending samples out to as many people as possible so they can try it too, but I also can't wait until the base warms up).

Vanilla - Try Shalimar, it's a little more powdery+floral, but it also has a nice vanilla that develops
If you can get your hands on some, try Geurlain's Spiriteaus Double Vanilla (pure vanilla really, little boozy)
Incense - There's a whole thread on this one, I can't be bothered to rename them all.

where are you located?

Thanks for the replies guys, I've got some sampling to do.

One thing I worry about is the high unisex factor of this segment, though. I'll have to tread softly.

And I'm located in Vancouver, BC! .

There's the Perfume Shop (forgot exactly what it's called) right in Vancouver and you can buy 5 samples of what they carry at a time... might want to look into that, or just PM some people to get stuff.

Rochas Lui is an excellent woody/vanilla scent.

vanilla, tonka, sandalwood, musk (and amber) are the notes i look for.

C.O. Bigelow Barber Elixir Black cologne has all the notes you mentioned Vanilla, Tonka Bean, Agar Wood, Musk.

It's one of my favorites. I am wearing it today.

Love Bavx. Staying along the same vibes you need to try Versace Dreamer, AMen- Pure Havane and Pure Malt and Le Male.
The niche ones suggested, you can always explore later but only after honing your smelling skills with designer scents to find out the directions that they might lead you too later.

I am kind of curious as to just who these recent posts are aimed at. The O.P. ant was a "six day wonder":
Join Date 10th December 2009 Last Activity 16th December 2009.
Maybe the notes he asked about caught the fancy of a new group, 18 months later? In other words, ant's topic was greater than he! long outliving his brief tenure here!

I just wanted to see how many other posts would come up after I revived the thread. Lol!

Lanvin Arpege pour homme.....But that opens with pepper too...Try it...
Chanel Pour Homme Concentree.....Guerlain Shalimar and Habit Rouge...
My personal favorite Caron Pour Un Homme has my favorite Vanilla but it also is a strong Lavender up front...Maybe the best lavender ever, I love it...but if you don't like lavender then keep going...
I have Shalimar and it's very vanilla. And something else...Iris? I will try the Habit Rouge next.
