Ahk! why did I buy this syndrome!

I've made some purchases that are somewhat shaky, but the juice has always been cheap, and I usually learn to love it.

However last March I thought I made a fool proof purchase

I was in New York

I went to Henri Bendel's and smelled L'artisan Bois Farine and fell instantly in love with it!
but I played it safe and waited

Walked down to Barney's, I love it there too

I decided to sleep on it, the next morning I was at the L'artisan Boutique in Soho I really wanted to buy the beautiful Bois Farine, but I waited till I got all the way down the way to Aedes

Finally I took the plunge and bought a 50ml bottle, sprayed it on my jacket and breathed in the wonderful aromas

Anyway the day I got home, I put it on and it smelled as if I'd stuck my head in a fennel bucket at a health food store.

I nearly puke, I know fennel is a main ingredient, but in NYC it had smelled sparkling and cozily nutty

The worst part is that I'm stuck with it and every single time I open my fragrance cabinet it sits there mocking me

I tried over four times and it was great, now I can't stand it

I am not afraid... I was born to do this. If you were born to do it then why are you afraid of it ?

Keeding .... that was my experience with Dior Homme. Loved it when I sampled it but cannot stand the jus in the bottle I brought home & NO I don't know why.

I only get sick of something if it happened to be what I was wearing when I was nauseated (from food, car ride, or drunkenness).

Lightgreen22, I sort of did the same thing with L'Artisan Mimosa Pour Moi. Bought a sample, tried it, loved it, tried it again, loved it again, bought a bottle.

I think I've worn it maybe 3 or 4 times all year since buying it. I am rarely in the mood for it.
*sigh*
If I sell it, I'll probably decide I love it again in another year. LOL

I definitely had a "what was I thinking?" moment with Fou d'Absinthe from L'Artisan. It's not that it's a bad fragrance, it's just that I have other frags that work better for me for any environment / desired scent where I might use it. I think the only reason I got it is that my friend was homebrewing Absinthe at the time of it's release so it felt appropriate somehow. I was also juuuuuust branching out from Sephora-land into nicheworld so the idea of a resinous green was something I hadn't smelled much of before (being confined to citrustopia, freshopolis, and marineland.)

Sorry that happened Lightgreen. I think alot of us have had this happen. Despite sampling the fragrance, the scent ends up being a disaster .

I suppose you can swap it on the Basenotes marketplace, so perhaps you don't have to be stuck with it. I know I dislike being stuck with a fragrance I cannot stand.

Sometimes the scent changes over many hours. So always wait at least four hours! I have discovered that a full spray is way diff from a small sample so I rub a lot of juice from the sample on if I think I might like it well enough to buy it. Sometimes if you are taking drugs, it can affect your sense of smell, or your body chemistry, I've found. Hormone replacement, for instance.

I got Armani Mania as a gift and thought about taking it back. I instead opened it thinking it wouldn't be that bad. Turns out it's really not my style. Only wore it a couple of times. Now I'm stuck with it. Sucks.

Ouch, rotten luck! .

Maybe try swap it with someone on the sales board!

You may have grown hyperosmic to a certain chemical. I had this happen to me with Amouage Reflection Man and suddenly the scent smelled terrible - completely out of balance, as if a madman just randomly grabbed vials of oils and mixed them willy-nilly. Not only that it hurt my sinuses and really irritated my eyes!

I took a rather brave (foolish? ) approach to trying to solve this problem - I figured i'd try to desensitize myself to the offending chemical and/or recalibrate my brain/nose by simply wearing it repeatedly. I wore the scent for for 5 days straight and suffered with it not only smelling funky but with great irritation. Then, on the sixth day, the strangest thing happened - it not only smelled like I remembered it, but it stopped irritating my eyes, too.

Now, I have a theory that certain vitamin or mineral deficiencies or toxin buildups in our bodies (heavy metals, etc) may cause us to become chemically sensitive. I had begun taking a really high quality natural vitamin and also cod liver oil (for the natural vitamin D which I am sure I was deficient in as most people in climates that have snowy winters are during winter anyhow, and add to that that I work night shift = no sunlight almost ever = no vitamin d!). I think the vitamins in combination with my brute force approach helped my overcome my problems with this frag..

I should mention that I'm not a masochist and I wouldn't do this for just any frag, but Reflection Man is one of the most beautiful fragrances I've ever smelled.

One more thing - some frags behave veeery differently on dry skin or in different temperatures. I know my dry winter skin has caused a number of frags to behave differently.

Anyhow, I know this is a bit rambly but I was having essentially the same issue - or at least a very similar one - and now it is gone, so I thought my musings may be of help somehow.
