Question on Macassar Rochas

Thread Starter
Argh! Is it really true that Macassar Is "Discontinued" Because on the Basenotes review page it says it's "In Production"..? I'm really keen on trying out this one! Sounds amazing! I heard it has
a sublime absinthe note towards it! Can anyone elaborate on It's qualities.

Is it similar to L'artisan Absinthe?

Cheers and you guys have been so helpful!

Take care!

As far as I recall, there were some different Macassars by Rochas.
I have a black box Macassar supposed to be `vintage`. It`s very potent dark spicy fougere.
When I`ve been in Paris some years ago, I`ve seen another Macassar - silver box, light-hearted fresh fougere (lavender, herbs, etc). This one could be still in production.

Macassar was first issued in a greenish box with MACASSAR written within a black elliptical shape on the box. The black box must be a later issue which i never saw nor used.

The reviews in http://www.basenotes.net/ID26121038.html pretty much describe Macassar completely.

Macassar always reminds me a little bit of Bandit. Dry leather.

I don't think we really know for certain that it's discontinued. Over the years of Basenotes there have been several "it's not discontinued, just very hard to find" or "very limited release or production" posts. It's hard to say unless someone can say with certainty from within the industry, and with some proximity to the Rochas house.

If it isn't discontinued, it's very hard to find regularly so it almost works out the same way.

We do know for sure now. I just received an answer from Rochas in Paris, France to my question as to whether it is still possible to purchase Macassar anywhere. Her response:

Nous vous remercions de nous avoir contactés.

Nous sommes au regret de vous informer que le produit n’est plus commercialisé.

Cordialement,

Translation: Thank you for contacting us. We regret to inform you that the product is no longer commercially available.

Thank God I still have 2 full 100ml bottles of the stuff!

Last time I checked the Rochas website, they had two masculines listed: Rochas Man and Eau de Rochas Homme. All else is gone.

For what it's worth, this isn't always reliable as to production status.

It is discontinued as I had written to the company and even started a thread to get people to email them and ask them to bring it back. It was discontinued and then re-released at some point in the newer rectangular bottles that some of the other Rochas fragrances also have. I have both the vintage and the newer and notice some differences probably due to age. This has become my favorite fragrance and I can't think of anything even similar to it. The absinthe is much different than Fou d'Absinthe as it doesn't stand out as much and is very well blended. This is my winter fragrance and whenever I smell it or think of it I think of a warm and cozy feeling and also feel nostalgic. Some may say it smells dated but I like them that way.
