Miss Dior - it's the current one not vintage, but it's still pretty good!
I miss the old black and white checked bottle, though. I so wish I'd kept the one I had in the 80's.

Wanted a vetiver with bite this winter morning.

Le Labo Vetiver 46

It is certainly a truism in perfumery that there are a million vetiver stories in the scented city and this is but one of them. To stand out amongst those million vetiver stories a perfumer must take some risks and push the envelope a little bit. Nathalie Lorson and Dominique Ropion have succeeded in doing this with Lalique Encre Noire and Frederic Malle Vetiver Extraordinaire respectively. Those fragrances are successful because of the choices of the notes around vetiver which expose new facets of something very familiar.

In 2006 Mark Buxton created Vetiver 46 for Le Labo and I think it is right up there with Encre Noire and Vetiver Extraordinaire. Mr. Buxton uses many of the same components you find in those fragrances but exposes a medicinal quality to vetiver which I found surprisingly compelling.

The top of Vetiver 46 starts with a smoky vetiver reminiscent of Vetiver Extraordinaire but very quickly that smoke is sliced through with a piquant black pepper so intense it stands right up to the vetiver and holds its own. This combination of smoke and pepper and vetiver is not an easy combination to like and those who aren’t crazy about unusual mixes of notes will probably not enjoy it as much as I do. The heart gets very woody as the clean woods of cedar and gaiac appear over the vetiver. A strong incense accord joins the woods and vetiver in the heart and this makes for an arid almost dusty version of vetiver as if from an apothecary jar to be brewed in a tea. The base finishes with a deep comforting amber for the vetiver and incense to settle upon.

Vetiver 46 has above average longevity and average sillage on me.

I’m not talented enough to pick out all 46 ingredients in Vetiver 46 but the ones I can experience combine to make one of the finest vetiver fragrances out there.

Have a Fantastic Friday everyone.

Squeezing the last drop of 28 La Pausa from the sample I used and loved yesterday.

Thanks for all the "Welcome waves" and enjoyed a good laugh at all the guesses about my call sign/moniker (cavaliercanary). I'll eventually tell...

A special thanks to my niece ubuandibeme for recommending this group -- I'm sure y'all know my niece is special!!!

Bond #9 Andy Warhol - Union Square (from a sample)....a melon-y green aquatic on me. Gonna give it some time.

I remember when Union Square was a pretty green park - on last visit there was a sort of farmer's market and a lotta trash. Hmmmn. NO connection to dear Andy who lived in his own freaky world and was WAY more original than this...

But what do I know?

DK Gold. I'm down to my last few drops...

Hello everybody!

I very happy to be in Keiko Mecheri's luxurious Cuir Cordoba this morning.
I'm wearing Lilly Pulitzer's Squeeze this morning...

It puts a smile on my face. It was a gift, too, and it also makes me smile to think of the giver. Lychee, juicy pink grapefruit, candied red currant, spring lotus blossom, wild rose petals, sun-drenched woods and water musk. It doesn't last long, but it's fun to re-spritz.

Mitsouko EdT today.

Infuriatingly short-lived on me!!!

TGIF!

Today, a few drops from my aged vial of BPAL's Hetairae: "golden honey, fiery patchouli, sweet fig and clove, and a blushing touch of ylang ylang." The honey is really coming out on me today, and I'm just loving it. I feel enveloped in liquid gold!

Reading through yesterday's SotD posts, I found so many on the disabled list!
30 Roses: I hope that your back has eased up a bit. I am all too familiar with back injury and have tried it all: bed rest, heat, cold, PT, X-ray, acupuncture, cupping, and various medications. My current favorite regimen is muscle relaxants, 800 mg of ibuprofen, careful activity, and resuming gym and Pilates carefully when the pain has lessened.

illyria: I too miss the old Miss Dior. It was a favorite of my grandmother, and I just loved seeing that classic design.

I wore Havana Vanille yesterday, like others. Gosh, it is wonderful!

Today I am wearing AL's Ambre Fonce, with an overlying spray of CB Smoky Tobacco.

Welcome, mediterranée! Glad you washed up on our shores.
Sorry if I've missed greeting any other new smelly friends.
So it’s Aunt Canary? That's a sassy smile I'm wearing having learned this factoid.
Dang, kumquat, I'd stop raving all the time about your photo choices if you'd just start posting more pedestrian selections.

Thanks goodness (again) for BN's directory/wardrobe.
I'd forgotten I'd given YSL Y 4 stars.
Winky-winky, L. I'm wearing the vintage.

I feel a case of lunacy coming on — scattered demands, sudden surge in work (yay!?), plus sugar-n-fat rush from King Cake for breakfast, thanks to DD's friend Nicole from NOLA.

Happy Friday to all! I'm trying out CdG Sequoia (thanks to a special BNer!). First impression: Methinks Kyoto and Timbuktu got poured into a bottle together. I like it quite a bit, but probably don't need all three!
Quarry, the last time I spritzed on some Y, I thought it might appeal to you! If you need some more to re-verify your opinion just say the word! (Yep, cavaliercanary is my beautiful Auntie!)

SL - Rose De Nuit from a sample.

Finally getting around to doing a full test of some more Smell Bent. Tried Hungry Hippies a while back and loved it. Today is Debonaire on one wrist and Horny Little Devil on the other. I like Debonaire, but I am entranced by Horny Little Devil. I think I'll get a full order of this one. I also want to try some of the new scents... especially Bollywood (sounds like Egoiste, but I'm hoping amped up rose, cinnamon, and sandalwood).

I haven't yet hit the shower, but I decided last night what my sotd would be, and I'm STOKED because I've wanted to try this one since I started 'fuming, and now thanks very much to Ubu, I can!

This will be my first time sniffing a violet fume, too!

I'm twins with Baldufita today in Michael Kors- wanted something "warm" on this rainy, windy day and that fit seemed to fit the bill.

Big wave and welcome to our new friends! I hope you love it here.

Just switched fragrances, to Hermès: Un jardin après la mousson, which just arrived. What a fabulous smell! Takes me back to the years I spent living in Southeast Asia, and how the street markets smelled after a good downpour during rainy season. Definitely a keeper!

Happy Friday, everyone. We're having a bit of early spring down here. Wearing No 5 Eau Premiere. It's always a no-brainer choice for me.

Haven't applied any scent yet, but keep thinking about AL China Pearl, so that will be probably be my pick. Sending good vibes to Chaya. And, take care, all.

So many new faces - welcome all!

Today I'm sampling the really disappointing Tom Ford White Suede.

This is one of those sad frags for people who are too embarassed to wear perfume. Four sprays and it smelled kind of like I used a nice almond soap in the shower this morning. No silage and the whole thing broke down into a little sweet spot on my arm within a few hours. Pointless and offensive to the true art of parfumery.

(no offence to its fans - I still love you guys!)

Cielo, by Napa Valley -- courtesy of the BN friend and from one of the few bottles remaining in the world. It is simple, sweet, clean and great. It is when one does not need to prove anything to anyone and is being accepted and respected nontheless. It is cozy and refined at the same time. It is when you do not need to go buy anything to feel happier. Sorry about the quote, but it is almost when it "runneth over".
