Fragrnaces you can't believe you've changed your mind on.

I used to detest iris, hated it, I even started a thread about my hatred of the note-------> http://www.basenotes.net/threads/231...ght=iris+point
I hated TDC Bois d'Iris, came to love it. I found I loved Dior Homme Cologne, found I loved Iris Taizo. So now I'm actively seeking out other iris frags. I remembered I had a sample of Bois d'Argent, that I HATED. Absolutely loathed the powdery, dry, iris in this stuff, could not get it off my skin fast enough. I'm wearing my sample now, uh oh! I actually like it! Now, it still falls into a category that I don't care for, because it IS very powdery, but going from abhorred to like, is certainly an accomplishment in my book.

I've decided to give PdN New York another chance. Waiting on 50ml of it --- not sure why I did it, but that makes this post a candidate for this thread I suppose, as it's akin to changing my mind (almost) on a frag

Used to intensely dislike Lancome Balafre in the 70s. Now I love it and wear it at least once a month.

For me it's Dior Homme. When I first sampled it, it felt litterally cold and sharp. Next time I tried it I didn't like the opening and heartnotes, which were like lipstick. Nowadays, Dior Homme is one of my absolute favorite fragrances. It's warm, comforting and I do find the so called lipstick rather pleasent. Later into the drydown I smell chocolate notes that I find to be sensual.

for me it was Terre d'Hermes and Rochas Man

when i first sniffed terre d'hermes, i literally got this weird feeling in my stomach, it smelled like stinky old man oranges, couldnt stand it, but now its one of my favs

when i first sniffed rochas man, i couldnt stand the sweetness and the hybrid lavender opening, made me feel sick, but now i really enjoy this one

I can't wait to get a bottle of TdH, a scent that I had for awhile given only 1 star (I've only given 1 star to maybe 7 or 8 scents out of all I've sniffed).

I originally hated M7, but now it's one of my winter faves. Don't know what happened. I had tested it in the summer (bad idea) and wrote it off as unwearable, and then months later on a random winter night I had this inexplicable craving to wear it (I had not even sniffed the sample in the meantime) and ever since I've loved it.

I used to hate tuberose with a passion...now I own practically every tuberose fragrance out there

I just FINALLY got to sample M7 a couple of days ago. I HATE it. I guess I just dislike oud. Because it comes off as a watery Nasomatto Duro IMO.

You should try Iris Silver Mist! It's the ultimate earthy, rooty iris, completely the opposite of Bois d'Argent's orris-powder and honey rendition.

For me, aldehydes were intolerable, and instantly gave me a headache. Now I love some super-aldehydic fragrances like La Myrrhe, Stephen Jones, and White Linen.

This is a phenomenon that ought to be noted! It seems many fragrances are more appealing after the first or second exposure, and after a certain amount of time has passed.

A*Men. When I first sampled it, I hate it. Then, i sampled it a second time, and bought it.
Now i love it, even in the summer.

I've actually tried ISM. It too is another that I truly dislike. It's too cold and rooty for my tastes. I much prefer when the iris is plush.

I can't believe I'm not afraid of Opium anymore. 1 spray used to feel like too much. Now I wear two to the neck, and 1 to the sternum.
Shalimar used to smell like diapers to me, and now I love it's intensely smoky sweet vanilla and animalic combination.

Cartier Declaration would be one I cannot believe I changed my mind on. First few testing I thought not only did in smell like Azzaro Chrome and CK One, but also had the smell of spicy body odor.

Flash forward to a hot summer day, and Declaration just shined and performed fantastically on my skin.

I found Knize Ten at first to be far to pompously ld-fashioned for my taste, but, against all odds,
I discovered subtle harmonies under this apparently rugged leather
Rochas Man- too sweet, too "immature"-smelling for my taste at first but, apart from discovering an unexpected affinity with gourmands lately, I also started to enjoy certain almost imperceptible spicy notes in this frag
Aramis (the 1965 version)- perceived it as lame and dated at first, but this frag truly has class, sexiness (yet in a mature and sober way), while remaining extremely clean and puristic-soapy, in a comforting, almost mood-enhancing way
YSL Opium PH- unimpressed by its "heaviness" at first, but this frag truly has power, warmth and magnetic charisma
Santos de Cartier- at first, some dusty-musty flowers against a powdery backdrop, little did I know that it would eventually develop into a smooth chypre with even a slight touch of citrus
Gucci Envy for Men- at first, way too generic for my taste, but the slightly Oriental touches of its drywon are blissful, long-lasting and simply addictive to me
Caractere by Daniel Hechter- no, not a leathery cheapo, I first thought, but some herbal and aromatic, almost botanical accords made me radically change my opinion
Vetiver by Guerlain- at first, I hated ANY vetiver frag, because I associated them with sleazy, sweaty, macho-like wannabe-seductive brutes (thus, something my of my male colleagues from high-school would wear.. lol), but I can never wonder how complex the drydown of this frag might be, interestingly, it almost continuously shifts (at least on my skin) from almost leathery tobacco, to slightly vanillic notes, again to bitter-sweet hints of more than just vetiver, but with one major minus point still- it wouldn't harm if it lasted longer
Chanel pour Monsieur- at first, my nose nearly seemed to skip all the other herbal-citrus notes and just get a bunch of bland florals, but now, once I've trained my noes to focus on more than just this single detail, I rediscovered its strength, its distinction and the fact that, in spite of being a classic, it's way ahead of its time and so energetic and zesty
Ungaro II- no more unilateral "Gothic rose" notes to me any longer, in fact, it may be one of the most underrated "dark", "bad boy"-frags (both attributes in a positive, appreciative sense) ever

Chrome.
At first sniff -- years ago -- it was headache inducing and I couldn't stand it. Years after that, my girlfriend at the time suggested how much she loved it, but I refused. Wouldn't even try it. Figured I'd give it a try a couple of months ago. Low and behold, I really enjoy it now.

tam dao. i got a bottle, because i LOVE creed santal imperial and was told it's similar. i did get that for a couple wearings, then tam dao got entirely too sweet on me

Kouros- dove in and it works fine. No where near as horrifying as it seems.

Rochas Man- Didn't like gourmands much after dabbling with Angel, but this one works for me.

The less expensive brother of BDP. I'd like to know your thoughts when you get it.

for the most part most fragrances I disliked a year ago I still dislike now
esp Le Male
one note I must make though is that I am starting to like leathers as before I wasn't too fond of them (Hello Knize ten)

I haven't worn Burberry London in ages. I only wore it once or twice from a sample and decided it was too "old gentleman" smelling for me. Then 2 years later after reading people rave about it again and watching YouTube videos reviewing it. I gave it a shot, but this time during Christmas. Supposedly this is best worn between November and New Years when the holiday season's at an all time high. Boy did that work. I used to rank #1 Burberry Brit, #2 Burberry Touch #3 Burberry London #4 The Beat (which I don't bother with anymore). After that experience, London jumped all the way up to the top of the list.

Another one I sorta did a 180 on was M7 Fresh. At first, it smelled waaayyy too medicinal to me when I dabbed it on my wrist. I never bothered with it again because it reminded me of Vick's Vapor Rub. Then I revisited the scent later (again, 2 years after). I thought to myself, "Not bad. That grapefruit note is pretty clean." Now it reminded me of the cleanliness that I loved in Hugo XY for whatever reason. I'll gladly wear it again just to get a better idea of what it is. I won't add it to my collection, but it's under consideration for a full wearing at least 2-3 times.
Most significantly, it was Kouros. Hated it at first, and now it's in my collection.
Habanita. I used to think it smelled powdery. Now all I smell is a great balance of vetiver and vanilla.

i still feel the same way about both! you nailed it with the descriptions. i felt the same way about a-men also. after that horrible synthetic smelling peppermint opening is gone it smells pretty decent.

Aquatics generally. Then i got New West. Then Kenzo pour Homme, Erolfa and Jil Sander Sun Men. Not because they are aquatics, but because i loved how they smelt.

Lets just say i have busted one more myth i once bought into.

In terms of specific fragrances, Oud Cuir d'Arabie and Rasa Extreme were easily the most "extreme" turn-arounds I've had in my fragrance hobby. With both I'm happy I gave them a second chance, though the latter is no longer in existence.

Same here! Oh God, how I hated it back in the eighties and now I think it´s one of the best fragrances ever created!

I hate it for th eopposite reason: I love oudh ! M7 is at the bottom shelf in my wardrobe because the little bit of oudh used gives reminds me of an oudh room spray.

Creed Tabarome - it used to be way too sweet for me. Now? I love it to death.

Aramis by Aramis

I didn't like it 20 years ago but now I do. Certain scents just seem to swing better with certain age groups...
too many to name!
i think it's normal that olfactive sense can change - specially when when you are quite new in world of scents. i have sth like this. at 1st i dont like terre d'hermes and fahrenheit... now i like them very much i think it will be much more of this..
I have not yet had a frag go from despise to really like, but I have had a couple go from like to love (L'eau par Kenzo and Derring-Do).

I have had a couple that I really liked a lot go to not really liking at all. Hugo (from not knowing any better and judging it initially by top notes only) and Izod. I cannot figure out Izod at all. There are times I like it (in small doses), and more often now I just want to wash it off. A shame really.

For the moment, Gucci PH II. I have owned it about 4 times, sold it, but for now I am liking it. Not really hard to believe, if you know me!

Ok fiiiiinnneee, I'll give M7 another chance. I really do want to like it, and your story has inspired me.
I tried A*Men at first, I had a sample... after an initial spray, the top notes almost made me vomit! However, after a couple more tries, I liked it more and more.. and now it's one of my favourites!
I never thought the day would come that I would have a bottle of Kouros. Now it's one of my favs.

I didn't care too much for Jazz at first either. Needless to say, I love it now.
Oh! If you want a lovely Iris Frag..try "Passage D'Enfer" Amazing stuff! I thought I really disliked the lilly and with the way it was amalgamated I thought It had a similar stench to Woodfired Pizza crisps thus with a few more whiffs its lascivious White Musk become more prominent and desirable! I was
captivated and it had me at a plethoric eclat! Loving it! Is dark, decadent and indolic!

Wow. I completely agree. I just got my second decant of Duro and I find a note in it that is exactly like M7.
Lorenzo Villoresi Garofano I used to be able to wear now I just can't handle it. Although after several hours it's really nice but it really stinks to high heaven en route to that drydown.
L'Air Du Desert Marocain, Hated it, Now I I cant get enough of it! As well as Bond # 9 Hot Always.
Diesel Plus Plus.. from not really liking to adoring it, haha.
Annoyingly this is happening to me with Amouage's Reflection every 2nd or 3rd wear or so. Some times it just goes horribly awry on my skin. When it works it is the most beautiful scent ever (imo, of course! ), but when it doesn't it is annoying and scratchy and just really really bad. I'm afraid to even spray it on since I never seem to know what I'll get. WTF?! Grrr.
Visit by Azzaro. I used to hate it, but over time I've come to appreciate and really enjoy it!
Second Post: I definitely have had a turn around on Azzaro PH!
It used to smell like a fougere with bad breath to me at first, now its just sexy and strong!
Chanel No. 5 - for years I thought to myself, too obvious. But after getting some parfum extrait, wearing it around the house, I find it extremely mysterious.
