new to forum - casting about for new products -

As a 49 year-old New England professional, I may be on the edge of geezerdom. I tend to wear just aftershave, not cologne. A few favorites -
1) Eau Sauvage (all-time favorite, but getting up there in price)
2) Royal Copenhagen (powdery, subtle)
3) Grey Flannel (good utility player)
4) Canoe (hopelessly passe but I like it)

If experienced posters can suggest similar products, I'm open to new ideas.

I enjoy following aftershaves :
Pinaud ( Musk - Special Reserve - Aftershave Lotion )
Musgo
Denim Musk Aftershave
Aqua Velva Musk

All these bottles are fairly cheap (specially the Pinaud bottles).

Not sure if I should be suggesting after shave, but I would suggust the following fragrances:

Rive Gauche Pour Homme by Yves Saint Laurent
YSL Pour Homme
Versace L'Homme
Guerlain Vetiver
Pino Silvestre

You are not anywhere near geezerdom! Abandon that label.
I love Eau Sauvage -- it is a quality product, period.
My suggestions won't be any less expensive but they will deliver.
Have you tried Armani Eau pour Homme? It is as available as Eau Sauvage, I think. I think it comes in aftershave and balm. But do try the scent too. Treat yourself.
Ever tried Truefitt & Hill? Their Grafton in aftershave balm is a dandy, so too is the scent.
PS -- welcome to Basenotes!

Geezerdom at 49? C'mon, puh-leeze.
It's never too late to try new fragrance and here's the good news - at 49 you could really rock some of the more 'old school' classics like:

Azzaro pour Homme by Azzaro
Aramis by Aramis
Polo by Ralph Lauren
Monsieur Balmain by Balmain
Eau de Rochas pour Homme by Rocha
Pour Monsieur by Pierre Cardin

And I second the rec on Armani's Eau pour Homme . Welcome to Basenotes!

To me it sounds like the ideal time to try Guerlain's Habit Rouge and Rochas's Lui. But all four you already have are fantastic and you should feel no worries in them. (How about that great powder in Royal Copenhagen? Yeah, baby!)

Otherwise see if you can check out these from Caron:
Pour un Homme
Yatagan
Third Man (Troisieme Homme, or 3rd Man, however they label it now.)

Those will put you in good times and not geezer zone either.

Also Hermes Equipage. Great stuff.

Rive Gauche Pour Homme. A rebirth for you. Ditch the AS.

I never expected to hear from so many, so quickly - this is an incredibly active forum.

Thank you, wooz. A couple of other random thoughts -

> My first real fragrance was Givenchy Gentleman, ages ago - which I still kind of like. However, I notice that it's quite unpopular on discussion boards - the verdict: it's too blunt and overwhelming. This could be true.

> Awhile back I picked up Adidas Dynamic Pulse at the grocery store, not really knowing what it was. When I got home I found out: geez, this stuff is really awful! I notice that's the verdict here at basenotes; it shows that your members are a pretty well-informed lot.

Pretty great forum, eh? Smart folks but getting people to agree on an ideal scent, hell, that makes for fightin'. That's why your perfectly good question brings an awful lot of suggestions.

Givenchy Gentleman has a few detractors here, but mostly it's a very highly regarded scent. In fact, you should bring it out again unless it's locked in the memory zone of when you used to wear it. Great stuff.

Welcome!! You might like de Nicolai's New York too...

Go to www.theperfumedcourt.com and you can order small 1 ml sample bottles of some of these suggestions....

shouldnt we be more, well, sensitive on him?
naa, all good stuff, I want to add

Antaeus (and pour Monsiuer for that matter) by Chanel
and, for the AS vibe
most by Trumper..

and here we go niche again..

Adding to the great suggestions above:

> Paco Rabanne Pour Homme
> Aramis Havana (get your hands on a vintage one, fun to chase!)
> my Dad (sorry hehe) was a Quorum/Aqua Quorum and Gucci Original (1976) man, and brings about great memories. Might be worth a whiff too, but the original Gucci's hard to find nowadays.

Geezer-dom at 49? Pffft. My Dad just turned 60 and he just bought a couple new scents that's way past his "age range" : Lacoste Cool Play, D&G Light Blue Pour Homme, Burberry Touch for Men (well, he did buy those from a pretty stewardess contact so hmmm)... and using Hugo Boss Soul regularly too (and weirdly...Ralph Lauren Rocks -- yep, its supposed to be for girls). Wehehe.

Thanks everyone. In just 48 hours, I've found enough fragrance advice to last me for years. Truth is, I don't have a lot of occasions in a calendar year to use the more refined fragrances - but when I do, I want them at hand. It's a bit like cars: a Honda Civic will suffice most of the time - but I want the BMW or Jaguar around, if needed! I realize most of you are more seriously into fragrances, so this analagy may not make sense; still, I appreciate your advice.
