Polo (original/green) vs Polo Modern Reserve

Thread Starter
I have both and am torn between the two... I think I give the edge to the original but have had quite a few compliments when wearing Modern Reserve. What do you guys think?
I find it amazing that two scents so similar can also be so different. I have the two as well, and find they suit different needs/moods.

I will always be partial to the original though
post #3 of 37
They are both solid but I find the original to be the more distinctive of the two, and love to sniff it from time to time even if I find it a little challenging to wear on a casual basis.
I'd go for the original anytime.

Modern Reserve is far better and more refined imo. It has a more sophisticated drydown and it's sillage it's slightly toned down but the longevity is still there. An improvement in my eyes

-Modern Reserve imo.

I never liked any of the POLO's till I discovered modern reserve! so yeah, modern reserve all the way.
The original Polo wins hands down in my book. Polo Modern Reserve is a pale shadow of the original and a major disappointment.
Sorry, once the original has entered my minds scape, it is prohibited to leave!
Modern Reserve is the best frag RL has released since the original. Reserve can easily be worn in warmer temps whereas the original is a fall/winter scent. Also, I'm kind of surprised that Reserve hasn't fared better in the marketplace given the popularity of the original.

I prefer Modern Reserve because the tobacco note in the original always smelled weird on me. A body chemistry issue I guess.
both are great, difficult to match the original one but with modern reserve they did a fantastic job. I love them both. Modern reserve more versatile though
post #13 of 37
Hmm..choosing which will stand first among equals. Gotta go with the original Polo in that light.

Amen. Modern Reserve smells like someone took a scalpel to the original and removed all the bones. The original could be a bit challenging with its no-holds-barred oakmoss/woody character but that's what made it an appreciable mass market fragrance. Modern Reserve felt faceless and cheap.

Totally agree! I never understood the need of "Modern Reserve".

I have both and prefer Modern reserve.

looking at this thread (and every other thread on basenotes for that matter) makes you think how subjective this hobby is! Amazing!
Polo Green reeks. Modern Reserve is much better.
Hands down Modern Reserve. The original Polo is outdated to me with the initial blast being just too much and bringing back memories of every middle school kid who wore too much of it. Modern Reserve can be worn anytime and is still distinctive and refined.
My problem with the original has nothing to do with the scent itself, and everything to do with scent memory. It powerfully hearkens back to a time that in my life that was wonderful, but does not need to be relived!
I own both, but Modern Reserve is far more faceted and endearing than the original. However, Polo Green remains a portal to simpler and happier days
post #22 of 37
Both are great, but the original is special to Me
post #23 of 37
I love the original Polo. The Modern Reserve is good, but smells to me almost exactly like the discontinued Polo Crest. MR is more refined, less potent, and has a lot less patchouli in it than the original. One of the reasons I love the first Polo is because the patchouli smells so prominent to me, especially as the scent evolves with time. MR is good, but doesn't satisfy me like the original.
I've got both of them, but original is little bit outdated. Modern Reserve is a winner. Veeeery sexy and modern scent. My best scent I ever had...
Polo Original me too.
Original is the best by a large margain to me
post #27 of 37
Not a fan of either.
Now that some time has passed, and I have owned each multiple times, I can honestly say I no longer care for either of them. Tastes change over time. If pressed, I would pick Modern Reserve. But really I don't care for either.
The original Polo was the first serious scent I ever owned. While I enjoyed it at the time, and have a lot of fond memories of it, it just doesn't appeal to me today. MR to me seems like a nice compromise between the original and something a bit more contemporary. However, much like the original, this type of scent doesn't work for me anymore.

Polo Green has no appeal to me either.....Modern Reserve is the better between these 2 for me.....If I could have my way I would have Polo Crest relaunched and that would be Great!!!

Sure I read/heard somewhere that MR was just a re-branding of Polo Crest???

It's been years since I tried the original, but I remember loving it back in the day. Have MR and like it a lot, will have to try Original again but I guess that's probably been messed with since............
I 'discovered' MR last year and was immediately bowled over by it. I loved it. However, I've since cooled somewhat. I still like it, not sure it's still love though!
The original Polo is great!
Modern Reserve is great. A 20 something year old can wear it without worry of smelling like an "old man".
Sprayed these both on while Christmas shopping at the mall. I'd say the original wins hands down. I agree with an earlier post that Modern reserve seems faceless.
Enjoy them both. The original more but mainly in my spare time, MR makes for a better work scent, pleasant and calming, exactly what the doctor ordered to help with a little nap at work.
I enjoy them both, but I prefer the original.
