Another reason Crocs should be outlawed!

OK, I've always thought Crocs footwear was a bad trend. It wasn't helped by the fact that I have a friend who is notorious for wearing Crocs everywhere--like another friend's WEDDING, or to clubs with a dress code--and we all have to get turned away because of one guy's refusal to wear real shoes.

Still, I secretly thought they might be comfortable to wear around the house. I have concrete floors in my loft, so I thought it would be nice to have some cushy houseshoes for kicking around. A couple of weeks ago, I was walking past a Crocs store at mall and I just said "screw it" I'm gonna get a pair.

So I got home and put them on... Hey, not bad. These feel alright.

Until the first time I decide to do my laundry while wearing them. I went down to the laundry room, where there is a lot of static electricity anyway. Coupled with the fact that I had my iPod earbuds in my ear, which can make the static zaps even worse... I walked in and as soon as I touched a laundry machine I got the zap of my life-- i got zapped so loudly that some guy standing across the room, facing the other way heard the "pop" and turned to ask me if I was OK. It was the most unpleasant thing, getting shocked this way from these shoes. I still kept wearing them and getting zapped. I've noticed that I'm getting so conditioned to get shocked that I approach doorknobs and tap handles in a ginger state of fear.

Just a few minutes ago I went to wash my hands. I turned the water on, put my hands under the stream and POP!-- I got shocked really hard from just touching the water! This is F-in' ridiculous! is there some way the people that make these shoes can make them resistant to static electrical forces? Maybe put a strip of material on the soles? Anybody else feel like Ted Bundy while wearing these monstrosities? (Or will nobody admit to owning Crocs).

I may have to just pitch them in the garbage!

I rarely LOL, but the image of a guy in Crocs at a wedding is hilarious.

BTW, why not as your friend how he deals with the static?

He's a rather portly fellow and I sometimes imagine that he's evolved some sort of lipid-insulated protective force-field!

Indie_Guy - you'd better ditch the Crocs- gee whiz- getting zapped all the time- I had no idea Crocs would do that ! I have not taken the plunge and bought a pair ....
Anyhow, they are hideous looking too.

I live in a pretty dry, static-y environment. I've never had that problem (any more than usual) with my Crocs - which, like Indie_Guy, I only wear indoors!

Prevent bad shocks simply by touching things often to discharge any buildup before it gets bad. Just remember to brush a wall or couch or whatever periodically, and the big zaps never get a chance to develop.

Also, make sure not to shuffle your feet.

The good news is: Now you get to hang with Shalimar.

An old boss of mine went to Thailand for 5 weeks and returned with a pair of cherry red crocks for each staff member, demanding we wear them around the office each day so as not to scuff the office floors. That lasted about 4 days.
18 months later when I threw in my job to open my own business, I dropped them on his desk and said "thanks for the loan". lol

WHAT WAS THIS MAN THINKING??!

Lots and lots of extra plastic to add to this polluted planet.

I thought they just looked bad, I had no idea they were so hazardous. Jeez...sounds really weird Indie.

maybe wear an anti static band like computer technicians do or attach anti static material like the material they send computer hardware in to the shoes. lol

^ I'd love them in purple please.. LOL

^Bro, I could consider sending purples as a belated birthday gift, but you must be sure customs won't confiscate/dispose them, they do look kind of crazy.

They may be the most comfortable footwear ever invented but omg, they look HIDEOUS!
*squawkk...! * Fashion Police! PULL OVER!

Instead of the ugly Crocs, get some ugly Birkenstocks. They are better for your feet and you won't get shocked.

The whole Croc thing reminds me of "Jellies" from back when...I can't remember the decade, but they were plastic and truly vile.

Love this scene.

Ahhh Crocs, how I detest thee. I worked at The Sports Authority (it's a large US sporting goods chain), for almost two years as........ a shoe salesman. I LOATHE crocs. If not for how ugly they are, or how I'd see entire families sporting matching Crocs in public, but for how I would clean the whole rack, and BOOM, 10 seconds later it was obliterated.

Heeheehee... I opt instead for the Sanita Pro oiled leather clogs with skid-resistant soles and no static. Added bonus, they make me seem about 5'9" and I can wear 'em anywhere.

Crocs are just hideous and should be BANNED. When I was on holiday during the Summer I did my own little survey (just for fun lol) at the beach watching who was wearing Crocs. The people who were wearing them were generally kids aged between 4-12 and moms and dads aged around in there late 30's/early 40's... I also saw a couple of people around my age who were wearing them too... oh dear lol.

I read somewhere that Crocs are a favorite in hospital surgery rooms. One can just hose off bloody entrails, etc. Cool. I can think of nothing more disrespectful for the most horrid fashion trend in many years. Maybe any and all things with the Ralph Lauren Polo logo will go the same way. Too horrible for words.

Other than wearing, say, plain ol' Wellies.

For the sake of full disclosure: I'm almost always wearing my suede Boston Birkies.

I hate 'em.

China is one of several countries providing manufacturing, BTW. Since you mention China though, it might be worth noting that it appears we have entrepreneurs in Canada or North America to thank for this design trend.

For simple comfort at home I recommend the black cotton 'rope soled' Kung Fu shoes (better than the plastic sole), designed and made in PRC, as it happens, and avaiable here for about USD 2. Mind you I saw them for USD 15 in Toronto

There was a massive debate in Sweden a couple of years ago about hospital staff wearing Crocs at work. Apparently the static caused important hospital equipment to go haywire and loads of hospitals forced their staff to wear something else.

I've always loathed Crocs, they are the most hideous looking footwear I've ever seen. My friend never stopped going on about how comfortable they were, so when I went to London a couple of years ago and got blisters from all the shoes I brought with me, I decided to get a pair. In the end, they were the only ones I could walk in without getting blisters! I was mortified having to walk around London for an entire week with Crocs on my feet, but it was that or staying off my feet during the whole holiday.

Nowadays I wear them in my garden where no one can see me. I still think they're dead comfortable, but I wouldn't be seen in public with them on my feet.

Yep, as ugly as they are, they are lifesavers in summer when you walk for miles and miles. My summers have been blister-free since I got mine.

My 94-year-old uncle, god bless him, was just widowed. He always used to like to travel, so his kids put him on a plane for Honolulu last week all by himself. Every few days, Cousin Jane sends a gang email describing Uncle Satch's adventures. This was the message I received moments ago:

I have been talking to Dad almost every day. He bought "clodhopper shoes full of holes." Can't you picture him in his Crocs? I called him at 5:45 this morning (Hawaiian time). He was awake watching CNN. He knew about the Chile quake, but had no idea it could affect Honolulu. I tried to explain the tsunami to him, but he didn't seem to get it, so I told him that the hotel woman said that he should have breakfast and get some supplies.

Wouldn't you like to believe you could know such first-time adventures at 94? (He's expected to be safe, being on the 10th floor.)
