These aren't necessarily the best of each group (and may I point out that I'm trying to diversify and not repeat any one group, but I've got to go with two Led albums) but they are the albums that affected me the most.

Led Zeppelin (self-titled first album)
+1 Led Zeppelin III
Pearl Jam 10
Rush Signals
Queensryche Empire
+1 Stevie Ray Vaughn The Sky is Crying
Metallica Ride the Lightning
Guns N Roses Use Your Illusion II
Theatre of Tragedy Aegis
+1 Depeche Mode Violator

Phew, ten. This is hard! Songs, or groups in general, would be much easier for me (as would broadening the spectrum beyond rock).

editing to +1 a couple and to change up my SRV; couldn't think of that title this morning!

I feel pretty awful having excluded Zappa.

I would put Sheik Yerbouti and Tinseltown Rebellion against anything

Excellent. The Kinks are so underrated. And Incredible String Band nearly forgotten beyond music freaks. A shame. Thanks also for reminding me of Fork Songs, I haven't heard that one in years (hope I can find it among my clutter). Love PIL too. And just realized I didn't have Wall of Voodoo on my list. Dark Continent & Call of the West are definitive statements of "America noir."
So much good music...

Jimi Hendrix shows up a lot in these lists. Despite his ferocious guitar work he had a soothing, nonchalant way of singing. And he hated his voice!

Here's a superb quality (visually speaking) clip which was recently unearthed. Really great because it also touches on the London Swinging 60s fashion trends. Jimi shows up at the 2 minute mark. Too bad the PA system had to be driven to distortion. Lots of technical limitations back then.

Adding Physical Graffiti.

Its my favorite from Led Zeppelin and its definitely one of the greatest rock albums ever IMO.

Now who is going to add Presence...?
Argh, got halfway through the list and unwittingly used this tab to look up an album on Wikipedia. So let's try it again. These are my favorite albums to listen to, not perhaps the "best" but the ones I enjoy the most. (Does that make sense?)

SRV - Couldn't Stand The Weather (An outstanding album with a lot of happy memories attached.)
Live - The Distance To Here (I'd take it over Throwing Copper, sue me.)
Joe Satriani - Crystal Planet (Hat tip to Strange Beautiful Music and Live In SF.)
MUSE - Absolution (Pushing the envelope in it's time.)
Linkin Park & Jay-Z - Collision Course (And I said Muse pushed the envelope? Jeez.)
Evanescence - Fallen (Perhaps the most divisive artist on this list, but you don't have to be original to be catchy.)
Eric Clapton - Unplugged (Some of this list may not be of comparative quality but I'd put this one up against anything.)
M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us (I've never claimed my musical tastes were particularly normal.)
AC/DC - Back In Black (As solid end-to-end as any classic rock album.)
N.E.R.D. - Fly Or Die (Give Pharrell of 'Neptunes' fame a rock band and this is what you get.)

Broad, eclectic, or just plain wrong, I stand by these 10.

In no particular order...

Guns & Roses - Appetite for Destruction
AC/DC - Back to Black
Van Halen - 1984
Faith No More - The Real Thing
U2 - The Joshua Tree
Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast
Helmet - Helmet
Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power
Stone Temple Pilots - Core
Soundgarden - Superunknown
It's interesting, I listen to a ton of rock but I'm at a loss to name specific albums, as I don't often listen to music that way.

As a good example, Origin Of Symmetry is my favorite Muse album, but I can't remember the last time I actually sat down and listened to the entire album, it just has the highest concentration of my all-time favorite Muse songs.

Some items in this category:

"Grand Prix" by Teenage Fanclub
"Filligree and Shadow" by This Mortal Coil
"A Wizard, A True Star" by Todd Rundgren
"Sandinista" by The Clash
"New Values" by Iggy Pop
"Love Bomb" by The Tubes
"Low" by David Bowie
"Ambient 4" by Brian Eno
"Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" by Joni Mitchell
"Some Girls" Rolling Stones

I could add many others to this list. Fun thread. Thanks!

Also adding Van Hagar Balance. You cannot tell me The Seventh Seal is not rockin'. If you can you need to revisit the school of hard rock.

Oh, and ajmc, yes, Presence is a great album, the hardest rocking album Zeppelin made. Achilles' Last Stand is killer. And which disc of Physical Graffiti do you prefer?

Your list does not lead me to believe Manilow would get an honorable mention.

Some good titles here.
Eh, what the hell, I'll make a list of what I listen to most in complete album form. In no order:

Fire Of Love - The Gun Club
Origin Of Symmetry - Muse
Yanqui U.X.O. - God Speed You Black Emperor
Veni Vidi Vicious - The Hives
The Black Parade - My Chemical Romance
Keep Me On Your Mean Side - The Kills
White Stripes ( eponymous )
Black Monk Chant - The Monks
Visitations - Clinic
Too Much Sleep - Bongwater

This isn't a list of my favorite rock, just the albums I find myself listening to most often.

I really can't pick a favorite because i love them all.
Some of my favorite songs are:

In My Time of Dying
Trampled Under Foot
Kashmir
In the Light
Ten Years Gone (i love the lyrics just as much as the music)
Night Flight
The Wanton Song

Actually i love them all! The only exceptions are Black Country Women and Boogie with Stu
I would not miss these two.

I agree, Achilles' Last Stand is killer. It just might be their best song!

If you like XTC, I assume you like Elvis Costello, Squeeze, and Jellyfish. If you've not heard Jellyfish, check them out. They have that nice melodic sense, as well as that sort of "bounce" to some of their music.
