Any Dog/Cat Allergy Sufferers? Got a New Dog (Updated with Pics).

Hello all,

Our family just got a new dog. We got her from a shelter today, and because she was so coveted, there had to be a silent auction to see who would get her - we ended up winning. The shelter sent her directly to a vet, where she was spayed, and was outfitted with one of those "lamp shade" collars. She's a cocker spaniel, and we all love her to death already. She's gorgeous, and I've never experienced such a loving, sweet, and kind dog - All she wants to do is love and please her owners, and is very quiet. She already walks around, and rests on the couch like she's been living here for years.

The problem is that I noticed that my nose felt a mild stinging/burning after playing with her all day. I'm not sure, but it might be allergies, and I really hope that it's not from her. Besides the two outside dalmatians that we used to have years ago, we also had two long-haired indoor cats, which gave me absolutely no problems. Further, I've been to numerous shelters looking for dogs, and have had no problem either.

I'm going to get some Claritin, as well as give her a wash and dust some of the furniture, to see if that helps. I'd really appreciate if anyone has any input, because honestly, I couldn't fathom anything other than keeping her. My family and I both love her very much already.

Thanks.

Your cocker sounds beautiful and I commend you for adopting from the shelter. Your reaction does sound like a mild allergy. I say mild because after touching a dog, my nose and eyes burn and I sneeze uncontrollably. Like you, cats give me absolutely no problems. Dogs and cats have different types of dander. It's the touching that causes the problem but if I wash my hands, and arms thoroughly after touching a dog, I can keep it under control. Try that and make sure you DO NOT touch your face/eyes until you have thoroughly washed. Claritin D is what I use if I forget to wash and have a reaction.

You cocker is hairier than the Dalmation, so she will also need regular baths to keep the dander down, preferably performed by someone other than you.

Good luck and enjoy!

Hope it all works out

Just a mini update, but no real problems today, so hopefully my feelings of allergies were more from the weather, pollen, etc. Here's some pics of her (click to see a larger image)...I'll try to get more and better quality ones up when I can.

She's beautiful! I'll bet she's going to thrive in your loving home. Glad it's going to work out. Have some Claritin on hand just in case....

See, that's the funny thing. Usually, even at the shelter, the dog's have names, but she didn't. We are deliberating between a few names.
