Creed Royal Delight...opinions?

I ordered a sample of Creed Royal Delight. This will be my first serious Creed sampling of the much-touted fragrance house.

I have a fondness for floral/leathers and also orientals, and as some people are in the search for the ultimate eau de Cologne, I am interested in finding the finest of this genre.

Heck, if it's nice enough, I'd buy it for the illustration on the box: the dashing equestrienne and her dandy escort. Those of you who *know* me will understand why...

I read the reviews in the archives, yet no thread has been posted on this that I could locate.

Any thoughts on this scent...and if it is gender-neutral?

Hiya Primrose!

I wore it today, as a matter of fact. Of the four or five Creeds I own, this is the longest lasting. Fourteen hours after I put it on, I can still smell it (faintly). I don't remember it even being a note that's supposed to be included, but at the moment, smelling my wrist, I smell a little bit of vanilla.

I am very fond of Royal Delight - it is sweet smelling, slightly leathery, and starts out with a citrus note, that fades out pretty quickly to a nice floral. I enjoy it a lot.

I would say it leans *very slightly* to the feminine side because the floral lasts a while and is pretty strong. But it is certainly wearable by a man. I'd be surprised if you didn't find it (you knew it was coming) delightful.

Tom, thank you for the reply! I do like the fact that the leather note is pronounced, as I like my florals and leather notes balanced.

The vanilla is a plus--I adore Shalimar and Habit Rouge and their touch of vanilla sweetness. I am also glad to hear this lasts. As this is pricier than many, it's good that it will be a value.

Thanks for the heads up on your latest article - I am really enjoying the walk through history. I'm known as a bit of a marketing guy in my field (IT services) and the analysis of how the different houses use their pasts in advertising and PR is really interesting.

I like RD a lot. It's very easy to over-apply though... it's got some pretty good sillage and longevity. It's really got a powerful jasmine/violet heart. Some people really like this accord and others really react negatively to it. It's definitely a love it or hate it scent. I love it when I'm in the right mood, otherwise I can get tired of it.

I've only tested by wrist sprays at fragrance counters, but always found it very nice stuff. I don't think there's a chance you'll go wrong, Primrose. In fact, the only worry I'd have is setting expectations too high. But I think it'll meet your criteria, and hope it'll meet your nose's.

I only sampled it once... To me it was from the same school as Heritage & Zino... I agree that it leaned a bit feminine... I also agree that this one is quite potent so go easy on the trigger...

Quite fond of Creed at large. RD -- not one of my favorites. Just doesn't work on my skin. I'd say masculine, not feminine.

I confess, though: had a bad experience with this one. I poured a sample into an atomizer that opened up in my shaving kit on a business trip. For two days I was soaked with this fragrance. Horrid. Might like it more if I had given it more of a legitimate chance. As it was -- no thanks.

Note to other Basenoters: looking for a good travel atomizer? Sephora sells good ones. Do not buy the ones at Nordstrom. I've had two of the Nordstrom ones open up in my suitcase. Never a pleasant effect.

Everything that has been said about my favourite Creed, RD, is true. In addition, i live in a tropical country, and the heat also amps up the indolic/animalic components of this delightful frag.

This was one of the first Creed's I actually loved. After wading my way through the feminines and disliking them, got a sample of RD and told it was classed as unisex. Have to say I still get on better with the male Creeds than the women's.

Regrettably, RD is my bete noire. I find that even the lightest dab makes me feel queasy, but, as mrclmind said, it's a love it or hate it fragrance.

Still, it'd be a poor old world if we all liked the same things.

An other classic with class: KNIZE Ten, obviously. While Or Black goes towards rose and the like the flourish part of Ten is more exotic but always present. I think the latter too is unisex nowadays - my lady says so and complies in wearing it.

Good thread Primrose- I need to open my mind more to Creeds. I love Angelique Encens ( insanely unavailable ) but Love in Black, Love in White ,a couple of unisex ones whose names escape me right now and Fleurissimo, really put me off Creed.
Sell it to me guys and gals.........
Tell me why I should love Creeds more- I found longevity a problem in some of them .
Royal Delight sounds ..well , delightful .
A must try for me, I hope to love it.

I don't think Creed have made a better scent since releasing RD in 1994 (Feuilles Vert isn't available and thus doesn't count). It's rich, luxurious, opulent, operatic, clearly more feminine than K10 IMO, and it has that Scotch tape note which you either love or hate. It doesn't reach the heights of Versailles pour homme - a must try if you like floral leathers - but it's a mighty good perfume. Royal English Leather on jasmine steroids . One spritz is all you need. Absurd lasting power, too.

You might try Tuberose Indiana - feminine, not unisex at all. It's a favorite among female fragrance fanatics I know.

Neroli Sauvage is my all-time fave - quite unisex. Short-lived, but you can happily reapply. Hands down my favorite citrus.

My SotD today is Royal Water. It's a little on the girly side, but I don't care. Love it. Reasonable longevity on me.

Why you should love Creeds more: high-quality ingredients, superb compositions, wide range of fragrances. You'll find at least one or two to love. Have fun with your search - best wishes for success.

Count me among the folks who really dislike this one. Too cloying and totally unwearable. I think the Habit Rouge comparison is pretty good, not because they smell alike, but because they have a similar tone. Even with the slightest application it was overwhelmingly sweet and floral.
Now, I am a huge lover of Luten's Fumerie Turque, another floral leather, so I thought Royal Delight would be a winner for me. Sadly, even after repeated wearings I find it nauseating.

I've sampled Royal Delight recently (thanks BG!) and was pleasantly surprised.

Royal Delight doesn't have the 'tried and true' Creed ambergris-musk base that you get in many other popular Creed fragrances. It's unusual for a Creed because it smells a lot stronger and more oriental than most of their offerings. The florals (jasmine/rose) come on pretty strong in the opening along with a smooth black leather. The drydown gives way to a sweet vanilla base. Luckily this fragrance never becomes too powdery or syrupy to me, I think it's the persistent leather note that gives it a lot of depth. Without the leather this would smell somewhat like Tauer's 'Maroc pour Elle', I think.

Sillage is great; When I put a small dab from the sample vial onto my wrist, and I can easily smell it at arm's length. The fragrance is long lasting, you can still smell it on your skin the next morning. That said, I understand why some people find this too cloying or nauseating. This fragrance might be better suited for cooler weather and it should be applied lightly. This could be a Lutens in terms of power and sweetness, but it also has a refined charm about it, as you would expect from Creed.

Royal Delight is one of the Creeds that I plan to own one day, I find it similar in spirit to Habit Rouge. Every time I think of the name, Royal Delight, I have a chuckle. You see, I have an older friend who is a deposed European royal, he loves giving travel tips that include his "cousins", one of my favorite lines of his was, "When you visit Lisbon, anything royal is a must!" True, Royal Delight!

It reminded me of Individuel by Mont Blanc, except that it has a bit of an animalic note, whereas Individuel seems to have replaced that with a "laundry musk" note. These are too sweet for me, which is why I swapped off RD and don't mind swapping off Individuel. It's not bad, but there are several other frags that are similar but I like better.

Perhaps I'm mistaken, but this reads like you are surprised that this has longevity compared to nice EdTs you have that don't... but I thought Royal Delight was a millésime, in which case the intensity & longevity is (usually) inherently more than an EDT, isn't it? At least when you are comparing frags within the same house?

I would say this with a bit more assertiveness, but you've been around here just a tad longer than I have.

ugh... after all the positive reviews, i've gotta go back and give it a THIRD chance.

unfortunately, right now I just can't get into this one. While it's not as bad as Royal Water (for a man, at least), it still just doesn't have enough masculine qualities for me to jump on this ship. I'll be glad to give it to my wife, though. The notes in it are truly superb.

I get notes of [this is my ultra-sophisticated, highly articulate nose talking] too much odd stuff crammed together that really doesn't belong together. It's like when you go to dinner at a friend's house who's an "adventurous" cook, and they toss a bunch of odd, mismatched flavors together that really don't work at all. Worse, it's like the point where they say, "Do you like my cooking? See, aren't I a good cook?" About that time you want to tell them "Stop it. Try getting some legit recipes or something. No more experimenting in the kitchen for you."

I haven't tried this one in a while, but I remember disliking it and finding it pretty far on the feminine end of the spectrum. I wouldn't even consider it unisex.

If one only smells a fragrance from the bottle, then one really has not tried a scent.

I recommend spraying on skin or at least a mouillette. Then one is a sufficiently informed to make a thoroughly sound opinion.

The initial spray of, say, the much-vaunted Tabarome, is sickening in its gag-inducing metallic note, akin to shaved aluminum and a heavy dose of fresh ginger. Allowing the full dry-down gives the full impression of the scent.

I absolutely adore Royal Delight. 2 sprays and I am good for the whole day. Gets me compliments quite often too!
