this is very subjective and there are very few, if at all, people who can name only one. There are many scents in the market, designers and niche that I like and I can't really say that there is one ultimate. Of course, some are better than others and most ppl may generally agree that Cool Water can't compete with Chanel Antaeus for instance, or Azzaro PH etc.

There are those that are trying to find holy grail of scent, but when and IF ever found, it is a holy grail to them only.

From scientific, chemist aspect - mayhaps there is the best one existing, and such contains perfect ingredients in best proportion or ratio.

I myself enjoy a lot of fragrances and adore vareity, so I don't care if there is one best ever made. Mayhaps there is and was worn by Egyptian Pharaoh 2500 B.C., or maybe Babylonian kings. Ancient peoples loved perfumes and perfumery is very old craft. We'd be surprised what creations ppl made in those ancient times! That is what I would like to find out and smell

I think I heard that Creed, being the official perfumer of the Chalcolithic period, are taking one of their scents out of the vault from this period for a special edition too. The most famous of which is called Vaisseau Cuivre. It's made, of course with only the finest natural ingredients and smells just like a copper pot! Although, I think it's considered unisex....

indeed, I like it a lot too, but just like it. It is kind of piney to me even though there is no pine in notes. Sure am gonna add it to my collection one day, lovely classic

Inexpensive compared to the one designed for Alexander the Great. It proved a flop after being favoured by Hephestious.

Seriously, Angiesdeboy, there is no answer to your questions since tastes are very personal, more even so when we are dealing with scents. The way olfactory perception works makes scents trigger memories, so in this case, associations can make a fragrance be a favourite or a despised one, independently of the craft of the perfumist or the quality of ingredients used. Or better still, someone may have a prefered scent becoming a despised one due to associations established between that scent an events that person lived through related to it.

The answer would be: that one that you love.

wow what a can of worms this presents!!!!
to me fragrance is such a personal thing and cannot be catergorized with a blanket...this is the best ever

however there are be worn atcertain charateristics/personalities/growth of maturity that most fragrances can
be worn at.ie a refined 'sporty'gent may better suit a 'nautical or 'sporty'smell
whereas a high pressued exec.might wish for a 'controlled,yet unique,spicey/mossy wood'type

It's a fine question, it is just sort of unanswerable.

We could all tell you our favorite of all time, but then you'd get hundreds of different answers. It's a bit like the "What Scents Do Women Dig" sticky....over time, everything shows. The beauty of that thread it is that it has gone on so long, pretty much all the scents are mentioned at least once.

Some may say Cool Water or Curve, while others who are more into reading GQ magazine will say Fierce or Antidote. I think the better question is "What is your number one favorite?" Mine is Fahrenheit, hands down. Asking what the "best" cologne is is like asking what the best pizza is.. opinions aren't facts. As opposed to asking what the best car on the road is -- which can be backed up.

The best in the world for me is Égoïste,
closely followed by Dior Homme and Intense;
Givenchy pour Homme; Fahrenheit; and Jaïpur.

IMHO:

The best overall is Ambre Narguile which is marketed as a unisex.

The best male marketed scent is Dior's Fahrenheit.

My subjective view is that Habit Rouge makes a good benchmark. If one looks upon perfumery as Art, one instinctively knows that 'best' is not possible, and certainly not desirable. It's as if saying: this is the furthest you'll ever get at life, you might as well stop now.

Yes, this is almost impossible to answer, but here goes:

Paco Rabanne Pour Homme

Why? Because for me it embodies perfectly everything I look for in a masculine scent: it's timeless, manly, strong, smooth, long lasting, perfectly balanced. It also happens to be the fragrance I'd pick if God told me that I could only wear one fragrance for the rest of my life.

But then again, this is all subjective.

I'll be different and answer this question directly: Serge Lutens Chergui. Viewing fragrance as art, it is the piece which has had the most profound affect on me. Surely it will change one day, and I look forward to discovering the fragrance which takes it's place as my #1.

Thanks for setting the record straight. I had previously called Creed about this frag but they told me it was made by the god Anubis when he worked for Oliver's ancestors back in 80,000 BC when Creed set up Their Most Royal Shop in Atlantis, not Egypt.

I like Creeds, but they do tend to exaggerate a bit in their marketing . . .

The best scent ever has yet to be made.

Though the protagonist found that getting the ingredients for it proved um---messy.

The best I can do would be to give you a list of my 5 star scents, which I'm too lazy to do right now but you can look them up in my wardrobe below, then check out the reviews to determine how well they've been constructed.

Patou PH and Original Dunhill '34 are shoo-ins on both counts, but that's just my opinion, besides even if they were 'objectively' 5 stars scents and masterfully created, they might not be your cup of tea, anyway.
You're going to have to search for the one or the ones.

*sigh*

This hobby is not fattening, but it does get to be expensive.
