Hello,

I've been working on a book translation where 'chair men' are mentioned twice. Unfortunately, I cannot find the expression in dictionaries and I cannot google it. Could you please kindly help me and tell me what these people actually do?

I'd be much obliged.
Kind regards,
P

The language of the book is English (I cannot give you the title of the book here, I'm sorry, but I can PM you if you think it necessary);

An old rickshaw man in Mandalay gives the narrator his card, which reads '..., rickshaw man, chair man'.

Then 'chair men' are mentioned among other people like rickshaw men and scooter lads on the streets, asking the narrator, 'Massage?', meaning brothels.

Can you help?

Regards,
P

Chair men are probably the people who carries around this thing.

Thank you so very much!

What I need now is to find a Polish equivalent of the expression.

Respectfully, with regards,

Sorry - a little late back to the party. Interesting stuff - the link above is cool!

It seems 'chair man' is the common translation of 'jiao fu' - sedan chair bearer.

Maybe just 'porter' would work and cross over into Polish easier if it's being used alongside 'rickshaw men'?

No, I already 'procured' an equivalent. Thank you all the same.
