I'm curious to find out which notes BNers are avoiding. This means that you don't like frags if the particular note in question is too strong. I didn't include notes like rose because it's not a strong note in more than a few "men's" frags. I also didn't include notes that don't last long, such as citrus ones. Amber refers to the stuff in frags like Ambre Sultan, and does not refer to ambergris here. Note that I could only include 20 options.

I never liked calone so I can't vote for it here. For some reason, cedar has become really irritating to me lately, unless it is very subdued.

Synthetic cedar. I love Atlas cedar. I like Virginia cedar. There's this screetchy, synthetic cedar - no, it's not Iso E - that's in a ton of modern masculines, particularly designer ones. I just can't stand it.

I'd vote for Calone and vanilla if the poll were multiple choice. I'll just record my double vote here.

Yeah, calone is my second hate-scent after robo-cedar.

Anise. If a fragrance has too much anise I can't stand it, I hate the smell of black licorice and sambuca.
Calone! Specifically calone-bomb fragrances.....
More sweet almond dominated fragrances to be launched and I'll lose my countenance...
I put aquatics, which I never liked. I wish you had FIG listed too. This one really annoys me and I've tried the best...maybe someday I'll appreciate it.
BNoters are generally not fans of aquatics; and for a good reason. Most refined noses are left wanting more than just "smelling nice". Also, after sniffing so many generic aquatics, you must lay down the law.

My personal secondaries are cumin and civet.
I put aquatics not because of the banality of it all, but because they usually smell very synthetic and can be super strong, initially at least. The first time I felt sick from the synthetic-ness of the fragrance was Bvlgari's Aqva pH. Since then, I avoided aquatics as much as possible.

1. Immortelle
2. Calone / Ozonic / Aquatic
3. Pepper, used injudiciously
citrus, soft lavender, leather, powdery vanilla, anise are all deal breakers for me when they are present in substantial quantity. Each are fine in very small doses though.

Yes!
I like texas Cedar, not so much Atlas or himalayan Cedar, but I don't dislike them either.
But the synthetic cedar kills me.
Everytime someone mentions Tumulte I resent them.
It's this type of synthetic Cedar that is really awful.
A Petroleum byproduct that smell dry/buzzy, yet greasy/oily at the same time? just awful

But as much as I hate that, it's still 2nd behind Lavender, especially the bitter nasty strains.
"population Lavender" isn't quite as awful

A large dose of natural high quality immortelle was the deal breaker for me on XXV.
Too bad, as I like the synthetic oud and blackberry amongst all the aromatic/resinous/woody notes.

I voted against aquatics
As always; aquatic!
For now. Incense
I voted for patch..but actually just because I can't stand it as the main part of a scent..I know it's in a lot of the perfumes I own and love..
My second vote would have been for the "aquatic "note, of course!

Where's oud?

I think I agree about the synthetic wood smells. I don't know if it cedar or something else, but I smell it in Carlo Corinto and maybe Yatagan and Giorgio for Men (reformulation). It is the smell of a tree with a sickly chemical undertone. I smell it in Carlo Corinto and, I believe, Yatagan. In Giorgio for Men (reformulation) it is faint, however the vintage does not have it, so it would seem that it is new and synthetic.

lol, robo-cedar! Can this please become part of the BN lingo?

I voted "spice of one kind or another" because I'm very sensitive to nutmeg in fragrances. Synthetic vanilla also drives me nuts.
Interesting question & poll.
* I voted against vanilla. That always, always is a deal-breaker for me. I don't want to smell like a cookie! I would take benzoin out of the group (I'm neutral on it) and tonka/coumarin (I often appreciate the hay-like notes in fougere scents).
* Amber and patchouli can be OK if handled with restraint. If not, they get treacly and obnoxious on my skin.
* Aquatic/calone -- can be irritating and thin, but it doesn't drive me mad. I just don't care for it.

Jasmine! Glad to know I'm not alone on this one, even if it's only one other person...

Obviously we know calone gets a bad rap around here, but it was interesting to see Amber & Leather both with 3 votes each.

Oakmoss & Tobacco with zero votes each, impressive!
Jasmine here. If there's too much in a fragrance, I'll puke. If it's subtle though, it's nice. Weird.

A persistent lavender is the one that's been sticking to me recently. Micheal Jordan Legend smells more like Rochas Man than Rochas Man does to me right now ... hopefully this is only a temporary adversion.

Pine. Ew.

Vanilla these days

Cumin

I do seem to have a problem with mandarin. It is very prevalent in the top notes of many modern fragrances, and becomes very sour if poorly executed.

In retrospect, I shouldn't have even included calone (you are not supposed to choose it unless you just started to dislike it within the last few weeks or so). Remember that I only had 20 options maximum. If I had it to do over I guess I'd include oud and get rid of the calone option.

I voted Vanilla, but only if it's a dominant note and is cloyingly sweet. Having said this, I adore Ellena's Vanille Galante. Tonka and Benzoin are OK with me.

Dihydromyrcenol

Calone when used with a heavy hand is by far the worst offender for me. I dont mind it when it is used lightly but it seems like alot of colognes are the opposite. CAse in point Bulgari Aqua Marine. I did like the regular Bulgari Aqua at one point but then I smelled Aqua Marine and they used so much Calone in it that it gave me a headache. As a result I hardly ever wear Aqua anymore. I think thats the only fragrance that has done that to me.

Then definitely stay away from Element by Hugo Boss. Ugh. Calone heaven.

My thoughts exactly.
I love it myself but it is everywhere nowadays and I know it isn't universally loved.
Going with overly sweet vanilla or calone.
2 go-to notes for the designer scents now-days.

And how is oudh 'everywhere' nowdays? I can never find any decent ouds other than in niche frags.
Iris and jumping on the oudh bandwagon are on my list.
Interesting poll.

I voted for licorice.

Multiple selections would have been a better option for this type of poll in my opinion.
oud, oud, oud.
Dreaded aquatic note ...............( and too much oud too, is horrid )
Calone - GD Calone - and I'm a sinner.
Anise/licorice. I don't mind if it's blended well and I can't tell but if it's apparent and very clear then forget it.
Aquatic is pretty much expected to be #1, I'm surprised though that animalic isn't higher up though; that's my vote. Most of the time (with the exception of some musks) fragrances that smell like body odor or feces disgust me.

1. Immortelle
2. Hazelnut
3. Cumin/curry
4. Benzoin
5. Tomato leaf
6. Boozy notes

I would love to try a fragrance with ALL of those notes. Reads like a delicious savory gourmand!
Tobacco but only because I used to be extremely hyperosmic to it. It always dominated any fragrance it was in for me.

Other than that.. nothing really although I'm not a huge fan of 'amber' (and it just absolutely GRATES MY NERVES to see that listed as a note, because, honestly, just what is "amber"? It can be so many things. I 'd much rather see, for instance "vanilla, labdanum, benzoin, patchouli" listed as notes rather than "amber." It's a meaningless term, just like "aldehydes" or "musk.")
